Blood Legacy #2

Blood Legacy: The House of Alexander

Rate this book
Ryan is reunited with her mentor only to discover that Victor has fallen ill, an impossibility for One who is both invulnerable and immortal. Ryan calls upon her human companion, Dr. Susan Ryerson, to continue her examination of their unique anatomies, hoping that Susan can discover what is wrong with her liege. Simultaneously, word comes that the Grand Council has been reconvened. The ancient ones who sit upon the Council call upon Ryan to conduct a millennial purge, a controlled hunt in which the least desirable of their Kind are culled. Ryan is brought face-to-face with the oldest of her Kind, and face-to-face with seduction on an unimagined level. As Ryan sets out to fulfill her duty, she also begins seeking the one who has betrayed Victor. Familiar with Abigail’s motherly allure and Marilyn’s overwhelming sensuality, Ryan is faced with new challenges in the form of Aeron, an ancient One nearly as powerful as Victor himself. Ryan knows full well that Aeron seeks her destruction, but as the dark eroticism between them grows, she wonders if he seeks far worse than that...

Yeah, vampires! Horny vampires! Well, they're not REALLY vampires. Moving on.

This book made me long for a description of a plain character. Every character was "seething with lust" and whatnot. That isn't a direct quote, but it probably could have been.

And, apparently, they're all really, really hot.

All the interactions with the characters involve the "palpable" sense of lust and power. *Yawn. You can't really connect to any of them.

And I can't really imagine what dialogue would sound like between two (horny) immortals that have been around for more than a thousand years. I don't think Kerri Hawkins was able to, either.

Prose style: it's there, but not that engaging. I should probably next read something with prose that's a bit more...chewy. This wasn't chewy.

Unique take on the vampire (ok, wait don't call them vampires - they HATE that) mythos.
Sequel to "The Story of Ryan."
Overblown sensuality, but (thankfully) no sex linked to the blood sharing.
Also, they do it with each other, not humans. Humans bore them.
Bits of interesting science on what it would take to sustain a vampire-like creature for 1000 years - down to the cellular level.
Main plot is about Ryan (Rianne) being tasted with the 'cleansing' - a cull of their Kind. She's given complete latitude to kill whomever she wants (if she can) for a year.
But there are political machinations among the Old Ones. And did someone poison her father?

The second book in this series is even better than the first as Hawkins expands upon the world the Kind. The mystery deepens as to what sets Ryan and Victor apart from the Others and how those very differences are used against them.

Hawkins gives us deeper details as to the hierarchy and rituals that make up this predatory society and it is both alien and familiar all at the same time. I also see Hawkins' even more at ease in her writing style and attention to detail which folds you into this brutal, yet oddly civilized world.

As I mentioned in the review of the first installment: Why this series isn't better known and hasn't been optioned by some movie studio is beyond me.

Somewhat of a letdown, especially when it came down to that particular vampiric fellow, whose name I cannot recall right now. But Ryan was Ryan, and she did not disappoint. I read it for her. XD
