Why is it that I keep stumbling upon these stories (I don't really have a set process for picking books, I just pick up things that sound interesting) that are, not only brilliant, but thought provoking AND belong to a series that I simply MUST read?! It certainly doesn't help lighten my already massively over-sized 'to-read' shelf!
Blood Legacy: The Story of Ryan is one of those stories. It is NOT your typical Vampire tale, but takes a rather medical (tinged with some of the most fantastic ideas) approach to explaining a race of beings that are far, far, FAR, more interesting than your boring, sparkly Edward Cullen type of vampire.
There is a good spattering of brooding, emotional outbursts, great fighting scenes, history, love, sorrow and extremely erotic scenes that are both deliciously devious, yet mixed with a little *wrongness* that leaves you simultaneously panting for breath and blushing like a school girl.
There were a few minor editing issues, some more obvious than others. Overall, a sound piece of work.
If you do one thing this week, give Kerri Hawkins' books a go! You will not be sorry you did!
This was a reread for me after years, forgetting the name and most of the plot, and then finding it again. I remembered that I loved it so much when I first read it.
Upon reread, it still has an amazing take on vampires and immortals, but I saw many more prose flaws that I wasn't able to notice the first time. The overall prose felt pretty weak. Otherwise, an absolutely unique and enthralling story. I didn't know it was a series before, now I need to find out what happens next.
A friend gave me this book, saying it was a good read. My first thought: "Another vampire novel? Whatever..." But then I started reading and it was so much more.
Hawkins' writing style draws you in and holds you. The pacing lifts the reader and carries you from moment to moment in a world that is solidly familiar but, thankfully, is not (or is it?). It is wonderful thinking you know where the plot is headed, only to be surprised at where it is actually going. And the payoff of the details of Ryan's confrontation with Victor is truly a gruesome revelation that you don't see coming.
Finally, an original spin on an old, tired genre! Why more people don't know about this series is beyond me. This would be an excellent movie franchise or, better yet, continuing Netflix, HBO, Showtime series.
Kerri Hawkins does an excellent job of creating a new twist for the vampire genre. Ryan, a beautiful and dangerous vampire has somehow drawn the equally beautiful Dr. Ryerson into the deadly world of blood-drinking immortals. Ryan is vampire royalty and there are a lot of Old Ones that wish to either possess or destroy her. I'm usually not a fan of these sorts of novels but, having collected the story in comic book form prior to reading the novel, I was pleasantly surprised with the results. It's definitely worth the time and money.
Fantastic tale of Mystery. It felt like CSI meets vamp? A well respected research Dr. comes into contact with women/being that has some very odd test results, and brain waves a random heart beat but she's dead ? These test draw her into a world she could have never though possible before, challenging her every belief. The "women ?" has a long and dark past which she shares with Dr. the mystery gets deeper.....Written with intelligence with strong world building. I can't wait for the next book in this trilogy
Phenomenal! Saw this on facebook from a friend and can't believe I had never heard of it. Already bought the next two books and the graphic novels. If you're truly a vampire connoisseur this is a must read!
