This best-selling book by Viola Spolin offers the most comprehensive theater instruction for all types of students, from small children to young adults. It includes over 130 theater games, plus exercises and instructional strategies. First developed by Spolin, the originator of modern improvisational theater techniques, these games have been tried and tested for over fifty years.
Definitely good when you've got to teach a crash course lesson the next day to some K-5th graders. Sometimes it's difficult to visualize what on earth she's talking about, but you can generally figure it out if you've ever taken any theatre class. It's really nice because it's organized into kinds of games and you can use it when you're braindead for ideas.
In so many ways, it's invaluable. Lots of innovative but now standard stuff explained clearly. And if there are too many "one size fits all" explanations and too many exercises you read and respond with, "Where's the exercise?" Eh...price you pay for the gems hidden in there. The removing amateur quality stuff is especially useful.
