I almost gave up on this book several times, but am glad I didn't. In the past I've finished every book I started, hoping the ones that started out lackluster would start shining at some point. But as I've gotten older and mortality looms I realize I won't have enough time to read all the great books out there so I need to be more ruthless in stopping when a book fails to deliver. This cutoff point has been 50 pages, what I believe to be a pretty standard length. Well, I got to the 50 page mark on this one and wasn't too impressed. It wasn't that the writing was bad, it was just I couldn't relate to the characters and had no interest in what was going on with them. But the setting of half the book (animal sanctuary) intrigued me, so I decided to persevere a little longer. The book was slow going until I hit the 100 page mark - then the plot picked up and the characters started to intrigue and I was riveted for the rest of the book. I don't want to give anything away but there a some great subtle twists and turns that make you rethink the characters and who is really the good guy and who is the bad one. It's so nice to read a book where you can't predict the ending and where the characters end up surprising you.
I’ve been working on this book a loooong time. Personally, it’s just not for me, but I think others may like it. Nothing in it truly resonated or sucked me in. Left with a meh experience overall
