Καπνός στον ορίζοντα
τις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1890 καταπλέει στο λιμάνι της Βιγκάτα το ρωσικό βαπόρι Ιβάν Τομόροφ για να φορτώσει πέντε χιλιάδες καντάρια θειάφι που βρίσκεται υπό προσωρινή φύλαξη στις αποθήκες της φίρμας «Σαλβατόρε Μπαρμπαμπιάνκα και Υιοί». Ο πλούσιος και αδίσταχτος ντον Τοτό Μπαρμπαμπιάνκα έχει γίνει αντικείμενο φθόνου και μίσους από τους άλλους εμπόρους, οι οποίοι του έστησαν μια ενέδρα που θα τον οδηγήσει μαθηματικά στην καταστροφή. Andrea Camilleri

Originally from Porto Empedocle, Sicily, Camilleri began studies at the Faculty of Literature in 1944, without concluding them, meanwhile publishing poems and short stories. Around this time he joined the Italian Communist Party.
From 1948 to 1950 Camilleri studied stage and film direction at the Silvio D'Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts, and began to take on work as a director and screenwriter, directing especially plays by Pirandello and Beckett. As a matter of fact, his parents knew Pirandello and were even distant friends, as he tells in his essay on Pirandello "Biography of the changed son". His most famous works, the Montalbano series show many pirandellian elements: for example, the wild olive tree that helps Montalbano think, is on stage in his late work "The giants of the mountain"
With RAI, Camilleri worked on several TV productions, such as Inspector Maigret with Gino Cervi. In 1977 he returned to the Academy of Dramatic Arts, holding the chair of Movie Direction, and occupying it for 20 years.
In 1978 Camilleri wrote his first novel Il Corso Delle Cose ("The Way Things Go"). This was followed by Un Filo di Fumo ("A Thread of Smoke") in 1980. Neither of these works enjoyed any significant amount of popularity.
In 1992, after a long pause of 12 years, Camilleri once more took up novel-writing. A new book, La Stagione della Caccia ("The Hunting Season") turned out to be a best-seller.
In 1994 Camilleri published the first in a long series of novels: La forma dell'Acqua (The Shape of Water) featured the character of Inspector Montalbano, a fractious Sicilian detective in the police force of Vigàta, an imaginary Sicilian town. The series is written in Italian but with a substantial sprinkling of Sicilian phrases and grammar. The name Montalbano is an homage to the Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán; the similarities between Montalban's Pepe Carvalho and Camilleri's fictional detective are remarkable. Both writers make great play of their protagonists' gastronomic preferences.
This feature provides an interesting quirk which has become something of a fad among his readership even in mainland Italy. The TV adaptation of Montalbano's adventures, starring the perfectly-cast Luca Zingaretti, further increased Camilleri's popularity to such a point that in 2003 Camilleri's home town, Porto Empedocle - on which Vigàta is modelled - took the extraordinary step of changing its official denomination to that of Porto Empedocle Vigàta, no doubt with an eye to capitalising on the tourism possibilities thrown up by the author's work.
In 1998 Camilleri won the Nino Martoglio International Book Award.

short review for busy readers: a less-than-impressive historical novel about the revenge Vigàta takes on a dodgy sulphur merchant. Confusing, overly complicated and overshooting the mark Camilleri normally hits with ease. NOT a Montalbano mystery.

I'm much more a fan of Camilleri's historical novels than the Montalbano detective series he's most famous for. La concessione del telefono or La mossa del cavallo are highly amusing, short novels that take place in and around the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàta, but are not full mysteries.
The same with this one, "Un filo di fumo", except it's far from amusing and misses the mark by miles.
It's the 1890s and a scoundrel of a local sulphur merchant has miscalculated his stock and can't fill the large order a ship is coming to pick up. This will ruin him as a businessman.
Chaos ensues as he and his employees try any means possible to beg, borrow or steal sulphur from other local merchants -- to no avail. They all hate the guy and are, actively or passively, contributing to his current spiral into hell.
That could be a lot of fun, except the narrative fritters away most of the novel on a carousel of visitations with this person and that person and this dignitary and family member to get a rounded picture on exactly why they hate this merchant and how they're enacting their part of the revenge.
It's too many characters with too many detailed backstories, and you quickly lose track of who is who and what they've done.
What essentially is a very simple plot is made horribly complicated -- which is possibly the point, but it's tiring to slog through. Many references are also made to 19th century Italian and Sicilian historical events, which will probably go over the heads of most non-Italian readers.
Which is a real shame, seeing as how many of his other non-Montalbanos are so enjoyable. Skip this one, and read "La mossa del cavallo" instead (if it's been translated into your language).

Non è il migliore dei romanzi di Camilleri, raggiunge un tre appena stiracchiato, forse perchè è uno dei primi che l'autore scrisse, sinceramente mi aspettavo qualcosa in più. L'unica parte davvero godibile è il glossario.

Questo romanzo di Andrea Camilleri, forse perché non è il mio genere, mi ha lasciato decisamente con l'amaro in bocca. In questo libro si parla di invidia e vendetta... perciò se mi date un'opera del maestro Camilleri che non sia un giallo (indipendentemente dalla presenza del commissario Montalbano), so già che resterò deluso.
Romanzetto che si legge in poco più di un paio di giorni (vabbè, io me la son presa comoda ed ho impiegato qualche giorno in più), ironico e divertente ma con un crescendo di avvenimenti che quasi quasi sfocia nel serioso. Qui compare per la prima volta Vigata, l'immaginario territorio delle future inchieste del commissario Montalbano. Molto belli i riferimenti alla storia reale.
Quello che proprio non mi è piaciuto è la caratterizzazione dei personaggi: alcuni mi son sembrati troppo ridicoli, se non delle vere e proprie "macchiette" siciliane.

ΒΑΘΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ: 3,5/5.
Είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο του Ιταλού που διαβάζω και αποτέλεσε μια πολύ πολύ ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Ο Καμιλέρι χρησιμοποιεί μια πολύ ιδιαίτερη πρόζα, εξαιρετικά κοφτή και άμεση και σκιαγραφεί μια σειρά από γεγονότα που λαμβάνουν χώρα στην Βιγκάτα, μια μικρή κωμόπολη της Σικελίας, με έναν έντονα κωμικό τρόπο που σε κάποιες στιγμές ρέπει προς τη σάτιρα. Όποιος έχει βαρεθεί τα κλισέ της crime fiction λογοτεχνίας αξίζει να ρίξει μια ματιά σε αυτό το μικρό σε έκταση βιβλίο, όπως και στα υπόλοιπο έργο του Καμιλέρι (βλ. ''Montalban'' series).

Una de las primeras novelas costumbristas de Camilleri, con Vigâta de fondo y su peculiar, aunque no pulido como en sus posteriores novelas, nos transmite el peculiar sentido del honor y la venganza, los desencuentros por nimiedades y como siempre lanzando pullas a la mafia, la iglesia, el poder establecido.
Le falta chispa, los chascarrillos que sorprenden al lector en medio de un párrafo y quizá defrauda un poco por eso mismo, el no poder soltar una carcajada a tiempo o destiempo.
Mejora con el paso de los años, se le perdona por ser el gran escritor que fue y lo que se supo engrandecer tanto las novelas costumbristas como las del inolvidable Montalbano.

Tutto il libro gira attorno all'arrivo di una nave dalla Russia. La nave dovrebbe essere caricata con delle casse di zolfo che però il venditore, don Totò Barbabianca, non ha. Tutti gli abitanti di Vigata, chi per una ragione chi per l'altra, aspettano con ansia l'arrivo della nave perché questo significherebbe la rovina di don Totò, uomo che si è arricchito con l'inganno e lo sfruttamento altrui e quindi odiato da tutti. Il filo di fumo è quello che tutti attendono di vedere all'orizzonte...

En esta novela no hay policías ni un caso a resolver, y es de un suspenso intolerable. En pocas horas concluye un pleito que lleva una generación cociéndose a fuego lento. Una venganza fría. Parece que el rencor es una costumbre que saben tener los sicilianos. Por lo menos es la idea que nos queda. El retrato que dibuja autor no tiene ni pizca de caridad. El paisaje áspero de la isla refleja el carácter de los protagonistas; o los personajes están hechos a medida de la geografía. Como sea, un poco de humor hay, pero no busquen piedad. Tampoco gallardía.
Todos los personajes son partícipes de la preparación y ejecución de una vendetta; son presentados para cumplir su breve papel en la apoteosis del último acto. El papel de todos es acotado, pero -y aquí hay que admirar al escritor- son dibujados, delineados en pocas y perfectísimas líneas. Esta es la concepción de la novela: un estadio de personajes, cada uno de ellos con algo que decir, con un aporte justo y necesario a la trama. No hay ni tiempos ni voces muertas. El caso necesita un escenario, y también se provee. Una aldea, un siglo, una sociedad entera. Lo particular y lo general son provistos por Camilleri con armonía, en detalle y en cantidad.
La prosa es simple, descriptiva y austera. Nada de lírica ni de evocaciones ni vida interior. Y la trama "es" un episodio siciliano. No aplica a civilizaciones más abiertas.
Finalmente, quizás deja un sabor amargo. Hay apenas un caso feliz, y a medias: uno que muere contento.

Ποτέ δεν με έχει απογοητεύσει ο Αντρέα Καμιλέρι. Ούτε αυτή την φορά με απογοήτευσε. Βρισκόμαστε σε ένα χωριό της Σικελίας, την Βιγκάτα, στα 1890. Η πλειοψηφία των εμπόρων της περιοχής φθονεί τον αυτοδημιούργητο επιχειρηματία Μπαρμπαμπιάνκα και επιθυμεί να τον εκδικηθεί, έτσι του στήνει μια ενέδρα που θα τον οδηγήσει στην καταστροφή. Ο Μπαρμπαμπιάνκα έχει υποσχεθεί να πουλήσει θειάφι σε μια ρώσικη εταιρεία. Κατά την συγκεκριμένη όμως άφιξη του ρώσικου πλοίου στην Βιγκάτα, ο Μπαρμπαμπιάνκα έχει ήδη πουλήσει το θειάφι, το τηλεγράφημα που ειδοποιεί για την άφιξη του εμπορικού πλοίου έρχεται ανεξήγητα καθυστερημένα και κανείς από τους υπόλοιπους εμπόρους δεν δέχεται να του δανείσει ή να του πουλήσει εμπόρευμα. Όλο το χωριό περιμένει να δει τον καπνό από το ατμόπλοιο που θα έρθει για να σημάνει και την καταστροφή του μισητού εμπόρου.
Ο Καμιλέρι με γρήγορες, στακάτες περιγραφές, που κάποιες στιγμές είναι δραματικές και κάποιες άλλες αστείες, μας περιγράφει τη φτώχεια, την εκμετάλλευση, τον φθόνο της σικελικής κοινωνίας του 19ου αιώνα.
Ο Καμιλέρι με γρήγορες, στακάτες περιγραφές, που κάποιες στιγμές είναι δραματικές και κάποιες άλλες αστείες, μας περιγράφει τη φτώχεια, την εκμετάλλευση, τον φθόνο της σικελικής κοινωνίας του 19ου αιώνα.

La vida de Vigata, el pueblo donde transcurren gran parte de las narraciones de Camilleri, a fines del siglo 19 se presenta como un espacio de poderes, componendas y luchas. Cumplir con el navío ruso la entrega de azufre parq Barbabianca se convierte en algo imposible. Todos los intermediarios le han vuelto la espalda. Jamás tantas personas han sido retratadas en Vigata, tan magistralmente. Camilleri con humor y hasta algo de pinceladas de sensualidad presenta a una sociedad de alcurnia y poder dispuestas a una jugada por sacar al ascendido Barbabianca.

Publicado por primera vez en 1980, "Un filo di fumo" es la típica novelista costumbrista de Camilleri, pero de la época en la que comenzaba. Quizá por eso, aunque se vean algunas de sus características habituales (muchos personajes, habla dialectal, chascarrillos...), la historia no tiene fuerza y ni siquiera provoca la sonrisa del lector, que pasa las páginas (al menos no son muchas) con una sensación de ni fu ni fa.

Niente, non ce la faccio proprio a farmi piacere certi tipi di racconti. Se non altro ho apprezzato la lingua di Camilleri e il suo stile di narrazione. Per quanto riguarda COSA racconta nulla, zero piacere.
Diciamo che do il beneficio del dubbio al fatto di non aver apprezzato il libro soprattutto perchè l'ho letto per un esame, e raramente ho trovato davvero piacevoli titoli assegnati a forza.

Andrea Camilleri è uno di quegli autori che gli puoi dare la fiducia comprando alla cieca. Lo vedi sullo stand e ti dici, "OK, oggi leggo bene!", e infatti questa nuova storia ambientata nell'eterna Vìgata ci riporta indietro al 19° secolo, ci offre uno spaccato corale di tante vite che ruotano intorno ad una truffa, e ci aggiunge una lezione di storia che lì per lì PARE messa per fare colore, ehh!

A me la sicilianità piace in tutte le sue forme!
Un racconto in cui tutti i personaggi sono delineati in modo superbo e te li vedi davanti mentre leggi così come i luoghi e gli eventi.
Di Camilleri conoscevo solo gli sceneggiati tv, con questo racconto ho scoperto lo scrittore, mi è piaciuto e leggerò anche altri racconti.
A me la sicilianità piace in tutte le sue forme!
Un racconto in cui tutti i personaggi sono delineati in modo superbo e te li vedi davanti mentre leggi così come i luoghi e gli eventi.
Di Camilleri conoscevo solo gli sceneggiati tv, con questo racconto ho scoperto lo scrittore, mi è piaciuto e leggerò anche altri racconti.

Un libro incentrato sul tema della vendetta, con una soluzione opposta rispetto al Conte di Montecristo; infatti se nel secondo la vendetta ripaga dei torti subiti, nel primo la vendetta punisce chi l’ha meditata.

Used to Camilleri's crime fictions? This is something completely different. Don't get into this book expecting a detective story, or you will be very disappointed (like I was). Expect something else, and imagine the tension building up in a small Sicilian (imaginary) town with the merchants waiting for their sulfur to be delivered...

A chapter of what I guess is some kind of sicilian comédie humaine, considered the amount of books Camilleri wrote about his part of Italy...too bad I haven't read any of the others, nor plan to do it in the close future.
I guess reading a Montalbano story - Camilleri's Hercule Poirot - would have been more captivating than this one, which somehow lacked of a major character who'd take the reader by the hand through the journey.
A few good metaphors, some history, village politics and economy of Italy at the end of the 19th century and the book is already over.
The dialect used - Camilleri's signature which made him famous - is interesting but you get bored pretty quickly to have to jump back and forth the lexicon at the end of the book...the interest of which is probably boosted if you're a native of the old Empire. A fun slightly exotic way to spend a day, no less, no more.

Zwavel was destijds kostbare handelswaar.Intriges,kleurrijke figuren van allerlei rang en stand,
figureren er als in een echte opera,niet zonder humor,maar onder de schijnbare luchtigheid,
komt een scherp tijdsbeeld naar boven.Siciliaans ,met vele kantjes.....

Camilleri non è uno dei miei autori preferiti, anzi, mi stanno abbastanza antipatici lui e Montalbano. Ma questo romanzo (un audiolibro), che mi è stato regalato, non fa parte della serie del commissario, è un romanzo storico piuttosto godibile.
