This book is amazing! There are so many words in here that I didn't know before. I've even learned a few new English words! It has just about everything you can imagine--household items, food, clothes, animals, emotions, even weather. It is mostly nouns though, with some adjectives, so if you are looking for verbs, this is not the book for you. I do feel that this has more vocabulary words than it does story; however, there is a thin narrative that runs through it, making the words feel a little less random. The pleasantly colorful illustrations are done in a folk-art style, using acrylic paint and colored pencils. I think this is a great tool for teaching bilingual children at a young age, or for beginning to intermediate Spanish speakers to learn some additional words--or brush up on older ones they may not use every day. I highly recommend this for ages 2 and up.
I love the rich diversity in Fatus' illustrations (a trademark of her work). She reflects many peoples of diverse races, cultural backgrounds, family structures, and abilities throughout the book, and this is one of the few Spanish/English "dictionaries" that I have seen that tells a cohesive story that links the pages together, so that if you aren't interested in reading every word on every page, you still have an easy, enjoyable way to access the content of the book. Well done!
