This new edition of the Bradt guide to Bratislava by expert author Lucy Mallows remains the most authoritative and reliable guide available to the city that combines history with hedonism like no other. Bradt s Bratislava is by far the most comprehensive and entertaining guide on the market in any language. Maps, walking tours, historical perspectives and hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs are all covered. In addition, it features detailed information on shopping, sports, gardens and parks that you ll find in no other book. Not only does it include out-of-town ideas, but it goes into greater depth than other guides and is written in an engaging and colourful style that sets out very deliberately to entertain as well as inform. This third edition is thoroughly updated to include the vast number of new boutique hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes. It also offers a useful transport map and guidance on city transport and an updated event calendar. Straying out of the city itself, it also covers Ko ice, 2013 European City of Culture."

“Bratislava’s small size is satisfying. You have the sense that you can discover everything in a few days, see all the important sights and get a real feel for the place without the nagging, lingering doubt that you might have missed something secret or spectacular.”

But, see, here’s the thing. When I’m a tourist in a city, I tour a place, a street, a neighbourhood, or an area. I look for a grouping of sites that are of interest to me that are close to one another in order to make my tourist traveling day productive. On any given day, I try to minimize the amount of time and effort I have to spend in transit. I don’t make a list of museums, or art galleries, or churches, and having visited Church A, for example, hop on the tram to seek out Churches B and C. So, a tour guide like Bradt that groups tourist sites thematically as opposed to geographically instantly drops down 1 or 2 stars in my opinion. That’s why my go-to travel guides have always been DK EYEWITNESS and DK TOP 10.

That criticism having been leveled, two pros on the plus side must be offered. First, despite the organization of the site descriptions that I have disagreed with, their content is first rate – history, address, appearance, hours, estimated cost, photographs, seasonality, and so on.

The other plus (which I can hardly praise strongly enough) is the absolutely brilliant section on cuisine, national foods, liquors, wines and beers. I have NEVER found a guide which guides me so fabulously on the liquid and culinary adventures that I like to sample in my travels. I’m thinking that if other Bradt guides do as good a job on helping me to create my “must eat, must drink” lists for trips into a new country, then I’ll probably resign myself to buying both the DK and Bradt guides to supplement one another.
