Michael Northrop is the New York Times bestselling author of 13 books for kids and teens, including the middle-grade adventure series TombQuest and the hit graphic novel Dear Justice League. His first young adult novel, Gentlemen, earned him a Publishers Weekly Flying Start citation, and his second, Trapped, was an Indie Next List selection. His first middle-grade novel, Plunked, was named one of the best children's books of the year by the New York Public Library and was selected for NPR's Backseat Book Club. He is originally from Salisbury, Connecticut, a small town in the foothills of the Berkshire mountains, where he mastered the arts of BB gun shooting, tree climbing, and field goal kicking with only moderate injuries. After graduating from NYU, he worked at Sports Illustrated Kids magazine for 12 years, the last five of those as baseball editor.
Really enjoyed this as a whole family. This is a definite win for kids if they enjoy Egyptology. I didn't read/listen to the first in the series but that didn't impact anyone, including myself, from being able to follow this.
A quick, fun reading, perfect for a nice weekend, like this one. I found myself loving Ren's sassiness, and I hope we get more of Luke in the upcoming books...
This book for me, was incredibly slow. I was bored most of the story.
I think my main problem with this series is the main character and company. Alex Sennefer annoys me incredibly. He's reckless, arrogant, selfish, unorganized... Shall I go on?
Apparently, battling a Death Walker and traveling to London wasn't enough to make him think, "Hey. I could probably die for real here, maybe I should make a plan before charging in." or "You know, Ren has just traveled with me to London, away from her family, and has been thrown into this mess. She's smart, maybe I should listen to her plans." NOPE.
It didn't help that there were many unnecessary passages. I don't care what Alex is thinking 24/7, I care more about what's happening in the scene. There were a lot of unneeded details (why do I need to know you're sitting in Row 22?) and not enough needed ones.
I did question on whether or not I should finish this series... I decided to, because well... If you start something, you ought to finish it. (Please Alex. Please gain some character in the next book, so I can at least tolerate you. Please.)
In this book Alex has to travel to London with his cousin, and his best friend Ren. There he battles a evil Egyptian tomb robber, and tries to find his mom. He ends up sending the robber back to the underworld but losses one of his "chaperons." He also finds out that the Order dosnt have his mom and has to travel to Egypt in the next book.
This book is a great read for anyone who is a fan of the hunger games. I enjoyed this book and it was one of my favorites. It is the second in a series so i would recommend the first book also. I think anyone would this book and you should give it a try
Recently, I have been enjoying TombQuest by Michael Northrop. I started it a couple of weeks ago and am on the last book now. The story is sort of like Percy Jackson meets The Infinity Rings.
The story centers around Alex, a boy with a mysterious illness who is suddenly cured when his mother uses an ancient Egyptian artifact to save him. Unfortunately, while Alex is saved, his mother's actions open a rift (for lack of a better word) that allows an old Order to return and gain strength. Before he knows it, Alex is and his friend Ren are in a fight to save the world, battling beings from ancient Egypt as well as human foes.
There are several aspects of this story that I like. First and foremost, I love the relationship that Alex has with his mother. He really respects her and loves her; he appreciates the sacrifices she makes for him. Second, I like Alex and Ren's relationship. While they are good friends, they do have disagreements (in one book they have a pretty big argument.) Most of the time in stories, you find that best friends get along perfectly. This story shows you that you can be best friends, have an argument, realize you were wrong, forgive each other, and move on. Third, I like the emphasis on forgiveness. I can't really say much about this without spoiling something. But not only do Alex and Ren forgive each other when they disagree, there is betrayal in this story and forgiveness. Fourth, I like how Michael Northrop infuses humor into the serious situations. I think it is cleverly done. By just adding a word or phrase, Mr. Northrop breaks up the tension just enough to take the edge out of the situation.
I am adding this to my list of "favorites" for pre-teens and adults with a childlike heart. I will caution that the author does not hesitate to kill characters in his book. (Mini Spoiler: so far, he hasn't killed any main characters, but there are minor characters that die.) So, if you have a child who is particularly sensitive to death in stories, you might want to steer clear of it until they are older.

My name is Ren, and our flight was complicated by blood-red rain that nearly crashed the airplane. Several people have disappeared here in London, and Alex and I are sure its because of the Order and another Death Walker. We know the Order has kidnapped Alex's mother, but he's becoming reckless. The scarab amulet around his neck gives him a weapon against the Death Walker, but it doesn't protect me. He makes me so angry! We need to figure out the identity of the Death Walker while it was alive in order to choose the correct spell from the Book of the Dead that will defeat it. However, I feel drained and need a break from Alex. I'll let him go search for information in the British Museum, but I'm sure I'll be safer checking out Rembrandt paintings while he's gone.
It's been a few years since I read the first book; not sure why it took me so long to read this one. You should read the first book to understand the backstory of Alex, his mom, and the amulet. The strength of the series is still the action-packed plot. It has bad guys popping up all over the place, strange creatures lurking in the dark, and mysteries with mummies and Egyptian magic. As hinted above, a conflict between Alex and Ren develops, as Alex gets tunnel-vision to save his mom. He ignores everyone else, makes rash and risky decisions, and endangers others. This slowly eats away at Ren until she gets fed up with it. Consequently, their bond becomes strained, which results in more tension for our reading enjoyment. Alex discovers a disturbing disappointment during the search for his mother, but Ren discovers a beneficial wonder. The climax concludes with a suspenseful showdown, but the resolution leads into the book's sequel. This series should appeal to lovers of magic, the undead, and Egyptian mythology.
Alex and Ren reach London to continue tracking down Alex's mother and locate the next Death Walker, but nothing is ever as easy as it seems and there are a whole lot of challenges waiting for them.
This was another enjoyable read that will appeal to multiple age ranges. The friendship of Ren and Alex will be tested as Alex explores his newfound health and powers. There are intense moments that may be overwhelming for young 'uns but help up the ante for the older readers.
I read it faster than my reading partner which is driving me nuts cause I want to discuss a few predictions I have for the series, but eh, we'll get there. This is a great read to draw your late elementary/junior highers into the world of reading and exploring ancient lore. Would recommend this series.
Death walkers have escaped. Children and adults are disappearing. Alex knows why. His mother accidentally released them using magic to save him from death. She’s disappeared, too. Alex sets out to find his mother and shut down the death walkers. His friend Ren is clever and agrees to help him solve the mysterious disappearances. They are chased by men in black and must escape them to continue their quest. I enjoyed the mystery and the story world. Recommended for readers aged ten years and older.
Remember Ren from Tombquest, well she gets her own amulet. The author Michael Northrop wrote the book Amulet Keepers. Do you like mummy? In the book there are mummys that are UNDERground. A person dies in the book. The person's name is Dr. Aditi. She gets her soul drained out of her body by a death walker. It seemed very real. For example, Alex can use the regenerater amulet in Egypt. I say everyone would enjoy this book.
The second book of the really interesting series, this book was very good compares to the first one being in a new envoirment and new elements brought into this book made for a good second book to this series. This book had me keep reading to finish it and find out what was going on although it was slow at times it was a good book overall.
