Throckmorton Family #5

The Flying Phaeton

Rate this book
This is an ACE for ISBN10:1518707858 The Flying Phaeton

"The Flying Phaeton" is historical fiction that follows Nicholas Throckmorton from adolescence to maturity. His youthful innocence is destroyed by family tragedy and as the years pass, personal revenge transcends criminal violence and transforms to international comeuppance.
Lives are left to rust in junkyards ... relationships are ground to mulch ... and loves are recycled as the Air Corps Captain leaves a trail of memories across the globe.
Nicholas pilots through an arid marriage and climbs away from a dying love affair in the Roaring 20s before he levels off to lusty one-night stands, harsh revenge and personal reflection in the Dirty 30s. The world becomes engulfed in war and his turbulent flight through life then detours to Indochina and the Southwest Pacific as he navigates around steamy relationships, an emotional love affair and self realization during the Fighting 40s.
As World War II comes to an end, a changing world presents personal and professional challenges for the fighter pilot. Studying the view from the cockpit, Nick finds someone approaching from an unfamiliar horizon at ten o'clock high, and quickly learns that he cannot clearly see life's runway if he continues to focus on his stormy past.
This is book #5 of the Throckmorton Family Novels. Although it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story, the familial quirks, quandries and questions of the previous four are clarified within the pages of "The Flying Phaeton".

Edward R Hackemer lived in Western New York for 55 years before retiring from government service and moving to North Georgia; roughly halfway between Atlanta & North Carolina.
His college education was abbreviated by induction into the US Army in 1968. Ed's civilian employment history runs from paperboy, dishwasher, paper mill laborer, laboratory technician, warehouseman, and over-the-road truck driver. His life experience includes military, federal and county public service in addition to nearly countless trans-Atlantic trips. Ed earned an honorable discharge from the US Army, spent time overseas, and remains happily married. He met his wife in Europe, and upon relocation to the United States she became a proud, naturalized American citizen.
(What a nice word naturalized is! Although it sounds organic and environmentally friendly, his wife isn't green. She's a blonde.)
Ed is currently enjoying retirement with his natural wife, son, daughter in-law, and two grand daughters.
Occasionally, he may be found in the company of his Lenovo Chromebook out on the patio or at his desk plunking out sentences on an HP Pavilion.

Goodreads asks the author to submit a review of the title. Here it is!

It can be hard to be humble. I gave up. But I can be honest. I wrote it, read it, wrote some more, re-read it, corrected this and omitted that, added this and altered that. I think. I've done it a lot. I hope the reader enjoys the story as much as I enjoyed sticking the words onto paper. Believe, me: words stick. I have also discovered that erasers don't work on computer screens.

I loved this continued story of Nick Throckmorton, his love for all things mechanical, airplanes and his young family. He served in the Army Airforce for his country in WW II .
The story flowed, a real page turner.
I can hardly wait for the next story.
This book was a gift from the author for my honest review. Thankyou.

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review. Due to illness it took me much longer to read than it should have. I loved this book. I was so happy to read the continuation of Nicholas Throckmorton's life and adventures. In reading, we learn of his friends, his women and his enemys as he flys through the battles of WWII. Aside from being a great story it was a story of history and what was happening in the world at that time. The book also contained a CD of music that was popular in the 30's and 40's. I wasn't born yet, but I did find quite a few of the songs that I was familiar with. Good Music and a good story line and characters. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story with history-love -sadness etc.

The Flying Phaeton by Edward R Hackermer is a historical fiction that tells the story of Nicholas Throckmorton. I did not realize that this was a series book, but this did not alter my enjoyment in reading it. Nicholas is presented in an honest and forthcoming manner and addresses both the good qualities and the bad qualities of this World War II pilot. It begins with the basically loveless marriage of Nicholas to Nora; they have a young son, who Nicholas adores. The story follows Nicholas through the Roaring Twenties to the end of World War II and presents the various time periods in a realistic and intriguing manner. The book reads more like a history than fiction and held my interest throughout.

A wonderful historical adventure! I enjoyed so much following the characters throughout the 20's and 30's on to WW II. I loved the story within the context of historical events that I have read about and am familiar with. Although this book is part of a series it read very well as a stand alone book and really makes me want to go back and play catch up with previous editions. A good read.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway and although it has taken a long time to finally finish it, I really enjoyed it. The only problem I had with the book was the fact that this was a series book that I had not read any of the series before it. Generally I don't sign up for series book for that very reason. Hence the four star rating. What I liked even us more than the story were the songs and idioms of the era. In fact I played those more than once or twice. They reminded me of the songs of my mother'sh era. All of end notes and the descriptions of airplanes were interesting. Occasionally I would read about certain airplanes that were still around certain Air Force bases. My husband is a retired colonel and even though he is not a reader of historical fiction, he browsed through the end notes and the airplane section. It is also fun to read about Moffett Air Force Base, CA and Barksdale AFB in Louisana, go two bases we were assigned to when our children were little.

Nick was quite the flyboy and initially I didn't like him much for all his quick pickups.
But things got better before the end and gosh darn it, at the end of the book I wanted o read more about him and his life in the CIA! Now I have to read all the other books in the series to be satisfied. Another reason for not starting out of sequence in a series. Mr. Hackemer has just gone and done it for me. Now I just might have to give in and finish the rest of the books.

The Flying Phaeton is the fifth book in the " Throckmorton Family Novels". This is the fascinating story of Nicholas Throckmorton's redemption. He is a charming lady's man; the World War II pilot; avenger of his family's honor; the provider of his wife, Nora, in name only; and the loving father of Alexander. Nick is the admirable hero of this exciting story. What happens in this book that will once again change the course of Nick's life? You will have to read it for yourself to find out! The mysteries and characters that are eventually revealed explain a lot of what happened in the previous four novels. I especially enjoyed the last 20 pages which contain a glossary to go along with each chapter. This is relevant historical tidbits that go along with the story. They are very interesting and well researched. In my opinion, this is Edward Hackemer's finest novel so far. You must read this excellent novel. I loved it! Will there be a number six? Edward says it's on the typewriter in his head!! I can only hope that it will become a book!

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
This is a book that grew on me. At first, I didn't much care of Nick but I did get attached to him as the story progressed. Lots of history was covered from the late 1920s through the end of WWII and Nick was in the thick of much of it. It made this story so much more interesting and exciting. Really enjoyed the notes at the end of the book ... they helped recap the story and gave more color to the historical period. Thought the music was great too. Good job, Ed Hackemer!

This is a continuing story of the Throckmorton Family. It is historical fiction with such an accurate vision of the time and place where the stories take place. Mr. Hackemer's descriptive verse is so thorough that it made me feel that I had stepped back in time and was actually living among the people. This is the 5th book in the family saga and I have read them all this far. I have truly enjoyed the stories and Mr. Hackemer's sense of humor in his writing. Although you can read this book as a stand-alone, I would sincerely hope that you read them all in the order written.

Excellent! I think I enjoyed this the best of the three I have read and will definitely be reading books one and two very soon! I love the glossary and notes at the back, and the introduction to the "set" and "players" at the start of the book. I read a fair amount of historical fiction and this appears to be very well researched and written in the style of the period. It feels very authentic. Thank you to Mr Hackemer for providing me with a copy to read.

This is a Goodreads win review. From what I can gather this is a continuing story. It is historical fiction about Nicholas Throckmorton and his life. The book talks about his exploits as a pilot and his stormy personal life.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway and it was one of the better books I read in 2015. The story captivated me from start to finish with the added bonus that the early years take place between Detroit and Mt. Clemens, Michigan where I've lived for the past 63 years.

After winning this book from Goodreads, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did find the hero rather egotiscal, but that's just the way he was.

The only thing I wondered is if the author named the main character, Nick and Nora, after the characters in the Thin Man series?

Wow, so I did a complete re-read! This has been an incredible journey, reading about the life of Alexander Throckmorton..and his family's historical background! This book was about his father Nick..who has become a curious enigma..for awhile now. The Flying Phaeton, is about what happened to Nick after he parted from his Brother Leo. What an interesting life (actually for both brothers and Alex), and I kinda didn't like him (Nick)in the other books. He ran away from his son Alex and wife Nora. Nick has flown around the world, participated in WW2, flew crop dusters, met lots of different people..and women (wink wink) and has experienced more tragedy than I could ever imagine facing. Knowing now what he went through, I forgive him a little, but he did have choices in a lot of places..where I didn't realize he did...and I don't agree with all of them. But then as a reader, if he had..there would be no mystery or emotions to be felt! I feel like I have been down a long road and know now after 5 books... An intimate portrait of a family and its characters! I hope that this is not the end.. But a lot of my questions from the beginning of Alex's life have been answered..yet I still see a story on the horizon..I believe the Flying Phaeton is still out there somewhere in the skies! I thought it grounded after the war.... Anyways 5 STARS For A TOTAL EPIC OF A STORY COMPLETE WITH ACTUAL BITS OF HISTORY, for laughs, heartache, being puzzled, and for all of the extras ;)

Mr. Hackemer has a wonderful talent in telling original stories, I have had such a great time reading his writing! I reccommend this Epic story for anyone, because it will open your eyes and mind to something new, and maybe something you never knew you were interested in before. Also for the timeless writing and explainations, the mystery and epic family history that starts out so innocent.. I have to say despite all that Nora..wasn't ..she was an Amazing Mom in raising Alexander!

Ok just read it!! But from the Beginning with :In a Cream Packard!
