Akihisa Ikeda (池田晃久) is a manga artist/manga-ka best known for the manga series Rosario + Vampire (ロザリオとバンパイア Rosario to Vampire). He's been a huge fan of vampires and monsters since he was a little kid. He says one of the perks of being a manga artist is being able to go for walks during the day when everybody else is stuck in the office.
The friendship is growing even more in the fourth volume of this incredible manga series! I love how this series combines amusing drama, hilarious comedy, and a collection of random monsters! It appears that the plot is going to be changing a bit, since the witches are being involved more this time around. I am super intrigued to see where this deviation takes us.
It’s summer vacation and Moka (along with some of the other monster girls) take a trip into the human world with Tsukune. They feel as though the don’t belong. They encounter a witch called Ruby who is upset that the humans are trying to destroy her Witch’s Knoll, a sunflower field which she inhabits which an ancient witch who is hell bent on destroying the humans’ city with an explosion. This volume has a suspenseful ending! Can’t wait to see where it goes next. Tsukune uses some more of the vampire power that Moka gives him in this!
These 2 volumes feature the Ruby/Witch's Knoll arc + the introduction of Mizore who will be the next girl in Tsukune's harem.
Let me just start that the Ruby arc went a bit different from what I had in my mind. Which is probably a blame for the anime. :P It had more action, and it was way more hectic than the manga is. Now it felt a bit anti-climatic. Yep, in a way the anime did a better job on something than the manga, and that is saying something as the anime is pretty much a mess (still good, but yes a mess). I also feel sorry that it ended the way it did, I would have loved more Ruby, see how she is doing, see if she can handle the loss. But I guess she was busy herself, we meet her again in volume 6 when she plays another big role and is able to repay Tsukune (more on that in the next volume review). But it is also a bit typical of battles in Rosario, especially the earlier ones. X starts to fight Tsukune and friends, Tsukune pulls rosario, Inner Moka arrives, kicks butt, and done. These days we also have some Tsukune doing some weird stuff (because of what is running through his blood is corrupting him). But yeah, it does get a bit boring and bland. In a way I can't wait for the second season. That one had some epic, long battles.
Back to the volumes at hand. I am definitely happy to see Ruby, she is my favourite witch girl, and I hope she can help Yukari feel more at home. It seems that there aren't many witches, or they are hiding really well given the crap that happens to them. I do want more witches, not only for Yukari's sake, but for all the witches sake. They may be between a human and a monster, they are super awesome.
Yep, I am still not liking Yukari. She is such a cry baby, and just keeps on doing stupid things. Her reactions in the human world were just over the top. Yes, I know she was scared, but that is still no reason to want to blow up people. No. Just no. That is the only reason why I wasn't looking forward to this arc. Yes, it brought Ruby, and some creepy stuff happening at the Witch's knoll, but it also brought lots of Yukari as these new characters are witches like she is.
Also what is up with the teacher? Just leaving her students there. I guess she trusts that they will do fine, but really, I found it ridiculous. Especially considering the whole Humans vs Monsters thing, you would think that a teacher would be around to ensure everything goes fine.
After the arc we go to Mizore's introduction. She is a snow woman + an enormous stalker. I have to say that at first I didn't like her, but as soon as she learns the error of her way and an annoying/creepy person leaves the stage, that she becomes much better, and much sweeter. Plus I just had to laugh at the places she pops up. One moment you think you are safe, the next she is popping up from behind a desk. :P Poor Tsukune is getting all the crazy girls after him. Also her hairstyle change was just adorable, she looks even prettier now. <3
Plus we are definitely seeing more of how Tsukune is affected by Moka's blood. The next volume (and probably the next one after that) will delve deeper in that, as it is now really going the wrong way for Tsukune. I know he will be fine (because I read the whole series) but I know that it won't be an easy ride for him. Poor Tsukune. :(
So all in all I definitely enjoyed these 2 volumes, even with the Ruby arc ending a bit weird. Still would recommend this series to everyone.
I would say this series is merely ok. The art isn't bad, but there are a million panty shots. There are even some of very young characters, which bothers me. I understand that this is part of the genre, but come on!
Each volume is typical "monster of the week" fare. Basically the same thing happens every chapter. I am still reading the series because it's fun to read here and there. Basically when I eat, have a few minutes to spare etc. This is not a series with a serious mythology or background. It's just fun & silly, so don't expect anything different.
I love that we get to see more character development and to see sutch amazing friendship between the characters ^^ Rosario + vampire volume 4 by Akihisa Ikeda get a 9.5/10 stars.
This manga is not terrible, let’s just say that. But it has a lot of problems.
The art is beautiful and I think the art itself is where the author’s talent lies most heavily, not plotting. The plots of each volume…pretty laughable to even try to identify them with the idea of ‘plot.’ The situations are so see through you know well before anything goes down just how it all will end.
Fan service is always appalling when it happens upon a page, though expected, but some of the scenes are too ridiculous and insulting to bear.
One of the biggest things that turns me off when reading is how unfoundedly every female creature flocks at the main character. It’s stupid, unrealistic and makes the volumes hard to get through. Tsukune has his modesty, his kindness and his loyalty going for him, but the ladies don’t recognize those attributes and use them as a basis for their undying love for him. The love is just thrown in there to make him look like a big shot, a young boy acting as a damsel in distress, needing savior from the girls around him.
I think what keeps me reading these books (despite having bought them all for really cheap and used) is the incorporation of different monsters and what possible ridiculous motives they might have. That, along with the arc of the Rosario and the tensions and connections it creates between Moka and Tsukune. In the end, I’m still going to read into the “second season” to see if it will get any better. First series : 2/5 stars
This volume, like the others did not fail to disappoint me. Again it's another re-read, however I realized I had forgotten a lot of what happened in this one. Here we are introduced to another witch, called Ruby and I loved seeing her back story and why she feels the way she does. I loved the setting of this book being in the human world for a wacky Newspaper Club Summer camping trip... With no sign whatsoever (for the most part) of their chaperon, Nekonome Sensei! xD It was great seeing little Yukari kicking some major butt! I think it made Kurumu respect her just that little bit and it sure stopped the bickering between the two... Well, for a while at least! The art style in this series just keeps getting better and better, and is exceptionally so during the fighting scenes. Those are the ones I sit and stare at for the longest, to get a good look at the angles and the detail the artist put in there. While I've said it before, I'll say it again: what this manga series lacks in plot it sure as hell makes up for it in the beautiful artwork and the lovable characters.
Well, I didn't read the third volume because the library has the entire series but the third volume... and so I tried to find the episode on the anime but they didn't have the volume 3 storyline before the 5th volume storyline so I thought I wasn't missing much....
Anyway, this volume was actually pretty good! I was shocked! The first one was blah and the second one was a bit better, but this one was a much larger step up from those two. Hopefully the rest of the series will pick up and continue this momentum...but we'll have to see.
The only thing that sucks about the missing third volume is I don't understand how Moka can infect Tsukune with her blood to make him a temporary vampire. Why does it not make him a full on vampire? And how does it just go away? Maybe there is an episode on this in the anime further along. I'll have to check it out.
There were good and bad things about this volume. First the bad, the whole "everyone should get along and then there would be peace and harmony across the whole world" shtick was laid on as thick as Tammy Fay Baker's make-up. I admire the author's idea that people who are different should be able to get along. But it was way too heavy-handed this volume, which brought down my usual rating from 4 to 3 stars.
But on the good side, I enjoyed learning more about the long-running feud between witches and monsters. Also, the new villain Ruby was interesting and I have a feeling that she will be a new student at the all monster school soon. Oh, and the creepy and way-too knowing bus driver was fun.
At last, a real cliff-hanger ending! Onto Volume 5!
The long summer has finally begin for Tsukune and grew as they travel to the human world on a field trip. Recently people have been disappearing in a sun flower field called, Witch's Knool and come can happen in a sun flower field anyway, unless your witch who's behind it. The flower may look harmless to them, but I'd watch your back if I were you.
I'm glad that this manga has stayed fresh and isn't just repeating the same old stories over and over. I think it has a lot of potential if it keeps creating new problems and I'm curious to see where it goes.
Tsukune, Moka and co have to battle killer plants in the fourth installment of this fun supernatural manga. This volume introduces the crow witch Ruby. Lovely artwork, fun characters.
Rosario+vampire is a good akuma based manga. It has a good art style and a good plot line. The akuma concept is good and very entertaining. Characters are good and interesting.
I think the first serie gets 4 stars while the Season II gets 5 stars.
The first serie is too predictable, almost the same simple plot occurs in each volume, the first volumes, that quickly gets resolved in the same volume. It's only in the last volumes that it starts getting more interesting. In the other hand Season II is much better, it has better plots, they last longer, and the villains cannot be beaten up solely by Moka this time, they all have to join forces in Season II. Tsukune is also more capable to defend himsef this time in Season II.
I personally like that the manga has strong female characters who can handle themselves most of the time. I really like the characters.
The drawings are quite beautiful, even more so in Season II, and the world in the background the artist created is amazing. It really feels like Nightmare Before Christmas, with creepy ruins all over the place, gloomy cemetaries and empty forests with dead trees, creepy school, pumpkins, etc. I've spent a lot of time admiring the background while I was reading.
The nudity might be an issue for some.
So I think if one is patient enough to get through a part of the first serie, and are not bothered by the nudity, will finally get to the better stuff later in the first serie... and to the much better Season II.
I know that I keep rating this manga series as a solid, "Well, this is okay!" but for everything I like in a volume, there's something that annoys me just as much. In this book, I felt like Rosario Vampire hit its stride as a series where the characters get along pretty believably, with the male lead being more than just the glue that keeps the girls from descending into a flat-out murder-fest. A lot of what they do in this volume is motivated by how they care for each other, and that's kind of cool. For all that, though, the whole thing with Ruby is ridiculous. It may not be resolved here, but I still saw her story arc coming the moment she started talking to Yukari, and still got annoyed when it all actually happened. It wasn't a big deal, but I'm heading into volume five with the hopes that it won't make me narrow my eyes and ask if the author is kidding.
This was definitely one of the better volumes in this series. Ruby's whole story is very intriguing, and many panels in here are so beautifully drawn, I had to stop and stare at then for a good amount of seconds. The harem elements of this series really died down in this volume, and I very much appreciated the little to no obvious fan service. Moka really didn't play a huge role in this arc unit the very end, instead focusing on developing our side characters and their relationships.
