About the author

Mel Gilden is the author of many children's books, some of which received rave reviews in such places as School Library Journal and Booklist. His multi-part stories for children appeared frequently in the Los Angeles Times. His popular novels and short stories for grown-ups have also received good reviews in the Washington Post and other publications. Licensed properties include adaptations of feature films, and of TV shows such as Beverly Hills, 90210; and NASCAR Racers. He has also written books based on video games and has written original stories based in the Star Trek universe. His short stories have appeared in many original and reprint anthologies.
He has written cartoons for TV, has developed new shows, and was assistant story editor for the DIC television production of The Real Ghostbusters. He consulted at Disney and Universal, helping develop theme park attractions. Gilden spent five years as co-host of the science-fiction interview show, Hour-25, on KPFK radio in Los Angeles.
Gilden lectures to school and library groups, and has been known to teach fiction writing. He lives in Los Angeles, California, where the debris meets the sea, and still hopes to be an astronaut when he grows up.

Der 2. Band schließt nahtlos an den ersten Band an. Gleich zu Beginn werden Brenda und Dylan ein Paar, und zwar ganz ohne viel Federlesens. Da ist Brandon einmal verhindert, den Anstandswauwau zu spielen, und schwupps verbringt sein bester Freund seine Zeit fortan lieber mit seiner Schwester statt mit ihm. Blöd gelaufen! Doch es kommt noch dicker für den sonst so überkorrekten Brandon: im Suff fährt er sein geliebtes altes Auto Schrott. Brenda widerum erfährt bei einer Pyjama-Party einige Geheimnisse von ihren neuen Freundinnen.

Der Autor setzt hier gewisse Vorkenntnisse zumindest seines ersten Bandes, wenn nicht gar der TV-Serie, voraus. So verschwendet er nicht viel Zeit auf eine detaillierte Vorstellung, geschweige Charakterisierung, der Personen. Da aber wahrscheinlich 98% aller LeserInnen dieser Bücher auch die Serie kennen ist das vollkommen in Ordnung. Ich hab mich jedenfalls sofort wieder nach Beverly Hills versetzt gefühlt, auch wenn es wirklich wirklich wirklich lange her ist dass ich die erste Staffel gesehen habe.

Siit tuleb nüüd kohe nii palju nostalgiat, et kohe on. See raamatuke on üks kolmest, mis on kirjutatud minu teismeea aastate lemmikseriaali põhjal. Ilmumise hetkel olin küll juba otsaga ülikooli jõudnud, aga see ei takistanud neid kohe ostmast ja nautimast (maksid ka tegelikult üsna soolase hinna tudegile). Ilmselt kui esimesena täiskasvanueas oleksid kätte sattunud, siis oleksin lugedes õlgu kehitanud, aga kui ise nende tegelastega koos üles kasvanud, teeb nostalgia oma töö.
Tegelikult on süžee neil üsna mõnus: kaksikud Brenda ja Brandon kolivad vaiksest Minnesotast Los Angelesse ja hakkavad õppima West Beverly Hillsi keskkoolis, kus tihti loevad vaid raha ja väline mulje. Walshid just rahas ei suple ja on üritanud oma lastele teistsuguseid väärtusi õpetada. BH noored aga, kelle väliselt elupõletamise ja rahas suplemise maskide taga peidavad end probleemide küüsis ja kuulsate vanemate tähelepanust ilma jäänud noored, hakkavad peagi ihalema hoopis uustulnukate sooja pereelu. Olenemata ajast ja kohast on teemad kõigile noortele tüüpilised. Eks mõnikord tunduvad lahendused liiga lihtsalt saabuvat, aga las ta siis olla, sihtrühmaks on ju ikkagi (kunagised) noored.
Seriaali pole julgenud täisealisena uuesti vaatama hakata 🙂

I'm a sucker for these because of my deep affection for the show. It's always interesting to note the subtle differences from what you see on the screen. This covers a pretty pivotal moment in the Brenda/Dylan relationship and it was fun to revisit that.

Drama, drama, drama!!!!! So much drama going on for a group of high school kids. It was like a regular high school on steroids but it did touch on a lot of problems kids can face. It was very entertaining.
