I'm not so sure how i felt about this book... It wasn't a bad story, but it wasn't great also... I think it was somewhere in the middle... I was having high expectations about this book, but it didn't work for me!!! I'm not so sure why that happened... but something bothered me in the most part of the book!!!
First of all, i didn't like the fact that in the blurb was written a storyline that intrigue me, but i didn't see it until near to the end!!! Where was my mob boy??? The half book wasn't about Zack and Tatum, but for Kyle and Tatum...
Yep, i get it from the start!!! Tate made the worst choice and she paid the price... and i'm soooo pissed off with her because she was so naive... She tricked herself that she was feeling something that wasn't there and all of that because some "handsome athlete" gave her his attention!!! So fuckin' wrong!!!
The second mistake was that from the first moment in that stupid prom she felt that between her and Zack was something strong... Something that could be turn in something great, but she just ignored it for Kyle's sake!!! His shitty attitude was screaming out loud from miles away... But she kept trick herself and continue that relationship!!!
And what was the result???? When she finally open her eyes, Kyle didn't take no for answer!!! Another strike.... She didn't act at all to that fact and she cling up to Zack for protection... who was willingly offer the world to her!!!
If i liked anyone in this book was Zack... His affection for Tate was obvious from the very first moment!!! I liked the attention, the protectiveness, the love that he was shown to Tatum... I liked that he knew what he wanted and he went for it!!!
I'm still not sure if i liked Tate.... She was keeping make so many mistakes, especially with Kyle and when was the time to make the right thing, she hesistated!!! Damn you, girl!!! Have you lost your mind????
I didn't like at all her friends and that's why they didn't try to protect her from that douchebag... Everybody knew how he treated her, especially when he was angry or jealous and when she started to be closer with Zack, everyone was criticizing her for that decision!!! Assholes!!!
I also didn't like her mother... She was such a bitch!!! She was mean and i think that she was a lightheaded woman... She was squeaking like crazy when she found out that her daughter will go to the prom with an athlete... And then she changed her mind and made such a big deal to Tate!!! WTF was wrong with you, woman????
And the biggest asshole of all was Kyle!!! Oh, God!!! I hated that guy!!! Who thought he was???? He made so much damage and he couldn't accept that the game was over for him!!! He was always in the way acting like a bitter and idiot person...
Oh, i forgot!!! And after all these shit, Tate was worrying about Zack's mob family and that he spoken for her... What does "spoken for her" mean??? It's like a lifetime commitment that she will be his girl, his love... for ever!!!
So, excuse me but that story didn't thrill me so much!!! It will be a next book??? Hmmmm.... I would like to see what will happened next, if there is this possibility!!!

Tatum is a sophomore in high school and has had a sheltered life due to her parent's strict upbringing for her. When the big time football player starts to pay attention to her, she is swept away by her feelings. But he isn't what he seems and she will suffer from that. But she turns to Zack who has always been there for her. He has a huge secret-his family is connected to the mob. Where will all of this lead? This one is a cliffy but I am anxious to see how this YA romance turns out.
You have to open your eyes to take in what you are overlooking. Girl Spoken For is a refreshing Young Adult read. I wasn't sure I was going to like it but the premise called to me and I ended up liking it quite a bit. The writing was pretty solid, the characters were interesting and well crafted, and the story line its was laid out well so Girl Spoken For gets a comfortable 4 star rating from me.
The story is told from Tatum's point of view and is the first book in the series. Tatum is a sophomore in high school that is going through a rough time with adjusting to her grandmother's death and her mother's constant harping on how being different is bad. A moment happens that forces Tatum to realize she can still live and so begins to indulge in being with her friends and even begins dating the star of the football team. Tatum is sweet, smart, forgiving, passionate, and usually follows the beat of her own drum.
During the story all the roads in Tatum's life lead her back to Zach, the quiet Italian boy she's known for a few years. Zach is a Mob grandson, quiet, caring, loyal, and attractive. Zach is always Tatum's savior even when she is with her jock boyfriend. He is a constant sideline that puts himself front and center because he's tired of waiting for her.
The book ends with a sweet cliffhanger and there's a teaser from the next book to bring about your curiosity. It seems the next book will alternate between both Zach and Tatum's points of view! The good part is the cliffhanger is in the middle of a massively important scene so you don't become frustrated and I'm thankful for that.
Girl Spoken For is the beginning of a new YA trilogy by Suzie T. Roos that I was granted an early release copy of from Netgalley. I have to admit that I was intrigued by the title of this book. It is what drew me to it and of course the blurb on the back cemented my desire to read this book. I kept going back and looking at the cover and trying to determine what about it kept drawing my attention. Even as I read it I kept going back to it. I finally figured it out after I finished the book and went back to the cover and stared at it like I do pictures in a museum. I won't give it away in case someone else had the same thing happen to them. It is a great cover but something that made me question what it means.
Girl Spoken For is told from the point of view of a 15/16 year old teen in the 10th grade, Tatum. It chronicles her daily life and how she ends up "spoken for" by the grandson of a mob boss. It also gives an in depth portrayal of how the normal trials of being a teen affect her. But, there are also some things most of us wish were not trials for a teen that she experiences that we watch her handle. These trials would shake up most adults so experiencing them with Tatum really draws you into the story. One of the best parts of Girl Spoken For is her inner dialogues as she reflects on conversations and events. I always reflect on events and conversations in my life and wondered if others had these same inner dialogues and even used to put them on paper until they were discovered by someone I wished had not discovered them because taken out of context most of our reflections might seem negative when read by the person who they are about even when they are not meant to be negative. Sometimes Tatum's thoughts spilled out on her friends and I was surprised and delighted by her friends' responses which reflected on how much they really cared for an understood her and her situation.
Tatum is extremely complex and I have to admit that I fell in love with her little sister, 6 year old Toni, and her responses to meeting Tatum's friends. She is so vibrant and innocent and there is this contrast I saw where Tatum also started with that same innocence and light until she starts experiencing some negative events. But, in school as she is internally dealing with these events her friends still were drawn to her and missing her light. We also see how a teenage girl goes through a relationship with her mother and those of us that had a contentious relationship with our mothers as teens can see from the outside how this might have looked and it was spot on. You hope that she comes out of it knowing that a lot of this is the teen not understanding the mother's role and just the conflict because the mother is the disciplinarian and the person guiding them through what they know a teenage girl can go through even if all they are doing is worrying because of their past experiences. Teens tend to see this as dislike by the parent when it is concern and the desire to protect. We also experience Tatum's thoughts and processing of her relationship with Zach. It was at times comical and at other times we cheered it on because of how much he cared for and protected her. You also worry about it because of his family. We only get a cursory glance at the structure and politics of his family towards the end of this part of the story which means I cannot wait for the next book and have already jumped on the author's website to see what I could learn about what was coming. Happy to see the next book, Girl Divided Two is coming soon. Review and author blog tour can also be seen at LadyTechie's Book Musings http://ladytechiesbookmusings.blogspo....

I wasn't sure what I was letting myself in for when I started reading Girl Spoken For, I normally read modern young adult books so when I started reading and noticed the date, I was worried that I wasn't going to enjoy it, but I was actually very surprised, not only did I enjoy this book I frigging loved it!!
Tatum Duncan is very naive, her parents are strict, kind of restricting her view of the world. When hot football star Kyle Johnson showed some interest in her, she jumped at the chance but did she really know what she was letting herself in for? She ignored the signs that there was something very wrong with Kyle and suffered greatly at his expense.
Zach Bertano, he's protective of Tatum and would do anything to keep her safe. I loved Zach's character, even though he was the bad boy of the school, you also saw the good side of him, that you can't help but love.
My only downfall is I thought she moved on to quickly after what happened to her.
Girl Spoken For is a book fill of mystery, drama. An amazing story that will keep you gripped until the end.
“Girl Spoken For” is a debut YA book by Suzie T. Roos that delivers a worthy reading experience. Well written, from first page to last you experience the 1980’s through the first person eyes of sixteen year old Tatum Duncan. She’s lost her best friend and confidant, her grandmother, and living with her impossibly strict parents can be a real drag on a girl’s self-esteem. When the star football player at her high school becomes Tatum’s boyfriend, for once things in her life are going good. Until, boyfriend turns into a total control freak. Tatum refuses his advances and she’s assaulted. That’s when another high school boy, Zach Bertano, steps in. Zach rescues Tatum not only physically but emotionally at a time when she’s at her most vulnerable. The two become inseparable. But what is a good love story without a little hitch along the way. There’s always got to be a catch. In this case the catch is that Zach Bertano is the grandson of a mobster. And to love Zach means there must be a long term commitment involved, and a tie to his mob family as well. So where does this leave Tatum’s and Zach’s relationship. The book ends on a great hook for the second book in this trilogy saga. Book one, “Girl Spoken For”, gets a five star rating from me.
Girl Spoken For is a YA novel with romantic elements that will have you turning the pages past your bedtime.
Struggling to overcome her grief for her recently passed grandmother, sophomore Tatum Duncan only wants to live a normal life and hang out with her friends. Her mom’s constant harping about her fashion choices and fitting in doesn’t help so when the star of the football team asks Tatum Duncan to go out with him, she hopes things will finally work themselves out after all. Except that Kyle wants their relationship to move along faster than she does. And when Zach Bertano, her secret crush and a mobster’s grandson, kisses her at the Homecoming Dance, Tatum is more confused than ever.
Will Tatum be the loyal girlfriend Kyle demands or will she follow her heart and be more than Zach Bertano’s friend? Or will the Bertano family make her an offer she can’t refuse?
This is book one of a trilogy and I can’t wait to read more.
Tatum Duncan is a teen on that sometimes hard to navigate road of growing up. After losing her confidant/grandmother, she attempts to move forward by hanging out with friends and dating a new boyfriend. But she makes the mistake of trusting the wrong guy. When her new boyfriend assaults her, she turns to longtime friend and sexy loner Zack. Zack is a good guy and cares for Tatum, but Zack has a few skeletons in his closet too. Namely he’s a member of a long-time mob family.
Suzie Roos does a great job of navigating the story from a young ladies perspective. Choices and relationships can be complicated in the fragile teenage years, particularly if there’s not a close bond with parents. I loved Tatum’s struggle to find her footing as she matures and not completely lose herself in the process. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for Tatum and Zack in book 2. Between her past and his mob family, I’m betting the fireworks are just beginning.
This is an exciting 1980's story of sweet, innocent Tatum Duncan as she faces the changes growing up in high school can bring. From her first boyfriend who turns out to be a wolf in football gear to the love of her life, Zack Bertano, I like the way Tatum fights to keep control of her life and herself. Zack is such a great bad boy/good guy hero, who thinks only of his love for Tatum when he 'Speaks' for her with his Mob 'Family'. But Tatum's fear of the 'Family' and losing control may tear the couple apart. This is the first in a series, so I'm anxious to see if Tatum and Zack are able to keep their love till the end of the YA trilogy.
I really liked this one. This was something set in the 80's and has Mob influence. Sweet! And I loved Zach and Tatum!! So sweet yet So connected. Cannot wait to read more in this series. Definitely a 4 star rating
First off, the book's description on Goodreads is very misleading. 40% into the book and there is no mention of the mob or Tatum being spoken for (Zach himself has barely been mentioned as of yet).
I chose to stop reading here for a myriad of reasons. I just couldn't connect to Tate or any of the characters. Up until right before I stopped, Tate came across as melodramatic and whiny. Supposedly, Tate's mom is horrible toward her, but besides her seeming to care more about appearances than Tate's feelings, she acts like every other mom (i.e. do your chores before you go out, getting angry b/c she finds a crude letter written by your boyfriend). Tate herself falls for a guy, Kyle, because he's hot and a football player. He's then portrayed (poorly) as a possessive and controlling (and borderline abusive?) guy, but she stays with him because he's popular and they have good times (which we never see...we also rarely see the temper he supposedly has; his face just turns reds and he says something mean for which he later does the "abuser" apology). Kyle's whole character seems forced- like trying to write a G version of a controlling, abusive boyfriend only to then switch to PG-13
Sadly, there was so many other things that I just didn't like about this book. I couldn't figure out why she was so obsessed with "reading" people (or really even what that meant and had to do with the story). Characters were just randomly introduced like we were suppose to know who they were already. Every incident talked about seems random and rambling (and then this happened, and then this happened..).
Unfortunately, I found Girl Spoken For to be poorly written with little character development, a lot of "woe is me," , and not at all like the description.
I have Spoken For this story! This is a mixture between YA with some scenes that could move it into the NA category. I absolutely love that this is set in 1989. So refreshing! Tatum is a sophomore in high school and has just lost her best friend, her grandmother. She has always embraced being different and being her own person. She ends up with Kyle, the super hot jock. She then thinks that everything is great and how she is so lucky that he wants her. Tatum is extremely naive and keeps trying to give Kyle the benefit of the doubt when he gets extremely possessive and abusive. She is put in a situation that is life altering. This is where things get really emotionally unstable. She feels that she cannot go to anyone. Zach (the other super hot, dark and mysterious guy) knows something is going on but cannot resist being Tatum’s knight in shining armor....or mobster in black. So many conflicting emotions and crazy secrets start surfacing. Gauntlets are thrown. And Tatum always ends up in the middle. The characters in the story are well written, extremely relateable, and easy to fall in love with. In the end Tatum does get what she wants but it may be at an incredible price. I have to say that I picked this book up because of the cover. It’s absolutely gorgeous! The perk is that the story is even better. I could not put this down. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I can't and won't review this book. I'm too upset to even really form the right words, but... I am so disappointed in this book. I found so many things wrong with it. But I don't slander books. I will just say that it wasn't for me. At all. We're not compatible.
I don't even know what to say... I really don't.
I've never heard of Suzie T. Roos before, and I hope that this isn't the only thing that she's written. I will always give an author another chance, so I am willing to read something else by her but... this book really bothered me. I just... wow.
I think I'm more upset by the fact that I didn't enjoy this book.
This book perpetuates one of my all time bookish pet peeves, when we are told something in the synopsis of the book that does not become present until quite a way into the book or, as was the case here, almost at the very end of the book.
I had some other problems with this book as well. I thought both the pacing and the dialogue were off and all the characters just seemed like caricatures.
All of the side characters of Tatum's friends were severely underdeveloped, they all bled together and it was very confusing in trying to figure out which one was which.
I also really didn't understand the purpose of the character of Nigel, his character just seemed to muddy the waters and then he wasn't mentioned again after a certain point and i didn't understand why he had been brought up at all.
Overall i just had far too many problems with this book to rate it any higher than a 1.5 star rating.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a copy to review.
I have some very mixed feelings about this book. It was a compelling, fast read, but just never quite lived up to what I thought was its potential. While this is a YA read, there wasn’t exactly the normal over dramatized angst I often get from YA books. The two main characters were pretty good, and so were many of Tate’s friends, though everyone had some critical flaws in my eyes too. The story is open ended, but does not leave off on a cliffhanger! The only way I see this continuing as a series (which it will) is by tossing in more boy drama. The mob thing is sort of a main point in the blurb, but seemed to have little impact in the book so I don’t see how big a deal it will be in the future, but I suppose that’s the point of reading on.
*Mild spoiler alert!* I generally try not to spoil anything when writing a review, but there’s a major plot point that I want to talk about for multiple reasons – plus it’s pretty easily predicted, even from the cover jacket. Tatum is raped about a third to half way through the story (not described graphically – thankfully!). You can pretty much see it coming, and while I NEVER believe anyone asks for, deserves, or should be blamed for being a victim of rape, there were still times when I thought she should’ve been more wary and suspicious. Her friends that hooked her and the boy up knew he had anger issues, and pushed them together anyway which really bothered me too. The immediate aftermath is very realistic and heartbreaking, however her jumping straight into the arms of another boy – no matter how safe he makes her feel – is not in any way realistic to me.
Overall, just a very compelling, yet conflicting read for me personally.
Girl Spoken For is a heartbreaking story of a girl learning the hard way about love and affection. Check this one out for an emotional read that includes a dysfunctional family, good friends, and high school drama.
I received this free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Hmmm... I'm conflicted by this novel. First, the whole Mobster thing doesn't even happen until the end of the novel.
Second (I'm just coming right out and spoiling this since I was blindsided by it) TATUM GETS RAPED. I'm not a fan of this subject, and I stay far away from books about this topic. The synopsis did not forewarn me about this, so I'm letting everyone know if this read this and also do not like the topic.
And it's descriptive... I'm shuddering just remembering. I did not appreciate being shocked by this.
Surprisingly I kept reading. I hated Tatum because she didn't report it, for stupid reasons. But then Zach came into the picture and the story got better. Not amazing, since this topic tainted the story, but I love Zach and wanted Tatum to be with him in the first place.
Third, this is the first part in a series. Didn't know that either, as I usually wait until I have all of the books in my hand before reading so I can fly through all of the books and won't have to wait for the ending of the story.
However, I think I may actually get the second one. (This is where the confusion comes in.) I really want to know what happens to these characters, and Kyle better gets what he deserves more than he already has. I'm not sure when "Girl Divided in Two" will be released, but I will be waiting to get it because I find myself wanting more of Zach and Tatum. And it's in both Tatum and Zach's point of view, which I'm very excited to read what Zach has to think about.
So while I hated a lot of this novel, I liked a little bit of it enough to intrigue me. I just feel like the author or publisher or someone should have made that subject clear upfront, because I was disgusted when I found myself in the middle of that scene.
Some readers might like this novel, some might hate it. I'm bouncing between the two sides myself, and probably always will.

This book was so awesome! I could not put it down. I literally read all night with no breaks. I don't read a lot of YA but loved this. Even better...it is set in the 80s! Zach is so protective and is most definitely a leader. And don't even get me started in Kyle. Man, I kept waiting for her to kick him in the balls. I am addicted to this series now. I can't wait for the next book. This book is a must read, but be prepared to be up all night!
**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review** This book started out not bad. The character was a bit different but totally felt like a 15yr old. The mom was a bit over the top and definitely not likeable, but still not too bad. However, about 28% into the book, an incident took place where there was no warning to the readers. Had I been aware, I wouldn't have chosen this book.
He's hot. Dresses and looks like he was made for the runway. Speaks fluent Italian. Brings dinner to his girlfriend's house. And he knows how to the put the alpha in male. Package...complete. You're welcome.
I read this book in one afternoon because I couldn't/wouldn't put it down!! Some of Tate's decisions worried me but by the end I understood her perspective and cannot wait for more!
