The Prophets Speak of Him: Encountering Jesus in the Minor Prophets

Rate this book
The Minor Prophets are an important, but often neglected part of the Bible. The corpus which constitutes the Minor Prophets includes twelve books written by twelve different prophets.

Due to the number of books, they were historically referred to as The Book of the Twelve; or simply; The Twelve; Today, they are most commonly referred to as the Minor Prophets It is important to note, however, that they are not referred to as minor because they lack theological significance, but rather this title solely reflects the relatively short length of their individual prophecies. In fact, these twelve books are anything but minor. They are filled with tremendously deep and rich theological material. The Minor Prophets will certainly not prove minor to any reader who will invest the time to explore them.

A Small Book With A Big Message
Just as the Minor Prophets had a major ministry, this is a small book with a big message. Anthony Selvaggio is an incredible storyteller. He has a heart and love for people and the Lord Jesus Christ that spills over onto each page. He expertly points the reader to various types, shadows, and works of Jesus in the writings of The Twelve. You will learn more about the Minor Prophets and more about Jesus Christ from reading this book. I highly recommend "The Prophets Speak of Him" to any serious Bible student.

Helpful for connecting the minor prophets to the New Testament

This book is a helpful introduction to the basic background of each of the minor prophet books of the Bible. It is not meant to be used as a general commentary on the books, and the author states the same in his introduction. If that is what you are looking for, I would suggest finding another resource.
What this book does well is make a connection between the themes of the Old Testament prophets and the person and work of Jesus. He makes these works come alive with relevance for today's world, and provides a useful backdrop for the modern reader to consider their messages. At times, however, I found the applications a little stretched and contrived, and overall the book lacked the depth of insight that I had hoped for.
I recommend this book as a companion for the modern reader who is studying the minor prophets for the first time.

Helpful introduction to how the minor prophets point to Christ. It’s not meant to be a commentary or in-depth study, but this would be helpful especially for newer believers who are not familiar with the prophets.

Have you ever gotten to the final books of the Old Testament while reading through the Bible and said to yourself, "Maybe I can skip right to Matthew"? Or maybe you plough right though them just to get done, because you know you are supposed to read them, but haven't a clue as to their usefulness for the church today.

If you struggle with reading and understanding the Minor Prophets, then I have a book for you. Anthony Selvaggio, pastor of College Hill Reformed Presbyterian Church in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, has written an excellent collection of essays "to 'unveil Christ' from the words of the Minor Prophets so that you will be 'drawn to come to him and receive him'" (p. 14).

Selvaggio provides an informative introduction, making simple the difficult aspects of reading the Old Testament accurately. After a survey of the historical background and the themes of the Minor Prophets, he moves on to discuss interpretive principles and pitfalls.

Selvaggio identifies three ways to see Jesus in the Minor Prophets; these guide him throughout this book. The first is to note and understand the explicit references to Jesus, such as Hosea 11: 1 (cited in Matthew 2: 15, "Out of Egypt I called my son"). The second involves typology. For example, Hosea's relationship to his unfaithful wife, Gomer, serves as a type of Christ's relationship to his bride, the church. The third method is to see how themes run through the Bible. For example, the theme of repentance dominates the prophecy of Joel, and it is also a major theme in the ministry of Jesus.

Each chapter follows a helpful outline. An interesting and applicable illustration is followed by a brief entrance into the prophet's historical setting. A statement pinpoints the heart of the message of the prophet, followed by a discussion question. These questions will challenge you to meditate on God's Word and consider how your life may or may not be conformed to it.

In the end, Selvaggio provides the church with a book that comes from the heart of a pastor, full of wisdom, depth, and simplicity. This book is highly accessible, and I recommend it to all students of the Scriptures for its fine biblical exposition and application. Selvaggio effectively unveils Christ in the Minor Prophets in a way that is profound and edifying.

When you come to the Minor Prophets, have this book at hand.

A little too much of the New Testament and too little of the Old. I would have liked a little more digging in the prophets to show us Christ, rather than "The prophets deal with these themes, and here int eh NT is where they are fully dealt with - lets go there."

Nevertheless - not bad, a couple of absolute soul warming gems that I really enjoyed - mostly when he showed us Christ in the detail of the books.

Can't decide between 2 or 3 stars.
