Catholic wisdom stated in a simple, sublime, penetrating way. St. Jean-Marie Vianney's sage counsel on 36 important topics, including the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Virgin, Prayer, Suffering, Hope, Envy, Grace, and Paradise. Probably the most persuasive exhortation ever urging us to renounce sin. Highly recommended for every Catholic!
St. Jean-Marie Vianney was born in 1786 at Dardilly, France. After being drafted, leaving the army, and opening a school for village schoolchildren, he joined the minor seminary of Verrieres in 1812 and was ordained a priest three years afterward.
He is often referred to as the "Curé d'Ars". He became internationally notable for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings due to his saintly life, mortification, his persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and his ardent devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Saint Philomena.
St. Vianney died at Ars-sur-Formans, France, in 1859, and was declared a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1925. His feast day is celebrated on the fourth of August.
Great little book, easy to read! I loved how it had such short chapters (most were only 2-3 pages), so it was easy to pick up without committing to sitting and reading for a period of time. :) Great content. Each chapter focused on a different topic (everything from Prayer, Grace, and the Mass - to going through each of the 7 deadly sins and temptation, death, etc.)
There were lots of inspiring quotes throughout the book, but my favorite is "Life is given us that we might learn to die well."
Spiritually refreshing! I love St. John Vianney's beautiful meditations. This a motivational and easy to read book if you want to jumpstart your prayers with inspiring words on the interior life. I'll definitely be rereading in the future!
I bought this used for $1 from a little bookstore at my university Newman Center. A great one to revisit!
"If we have abused the graces that the good God has given us, let us make haste to repair the past by great fidelity, and let us endeavor to acquire merits worthy of eternal life."
Simple and yet profound advice. St John Vianney is a great saint, deeply in love with Our Lord. There are hardly any chapters where I didn't highlighted something. I read it slowly, a chapter a day. Sometimes I went back I read a paragraph or whole chapter again. It is a very short book but I wanted to take my time.
My only complain is that the introduction was way too long and frankly, pointless. I would have been happy with a short biography: date of birth, how he ended up being a priest in a remote village and his death. All the person or persons did was quote St John Vianney in every page, in almost every paragraph. And all the quotes are in the different chapters so... waste of paper and my time.
I am glad I got to know this saint and read his thoughts and very wise counsel.
This was a small book, but a very good one! It was easy to read just a chapter a day and gave me something to reflect and meditate upon. I loved how it gave me access to the words a Saint said, and into his way of thinking. A very good book!
