Susan Cain is a former lawyer and negotiations consultant turned writer and lecturer. She started working on her book back in 2005 and finally published it seven years later in January 2012. The book was accomplished through reading hundreds of scholarly works and interviewing hundreds of people about the topic.

In an interview with Jeff Glor, Cain explained that her inspiration for writing Quiet was the same “mix of passion and indignation” that inspired the feminist Betty Friedan in writing The Feminine Mystique. She believes that introverts today suffer the same discrimination as the women at that time. She argues that Western culture today widely favors extroverts and overlooks the potential of introverts, thus leads to a “colossal waste of talent, energy, and happiness”.

After three years of publication, the book has influenced schools, universities, businesses and offices to create environments that favor both introverts and extroverts.

If you are expecting useful information about how to take advantage of natural introverted tendencies.... You will be looking for that. The book is full of stories of famous or not famous introverts, with useful information sparsely sprinkled inbetween them. It is like looking for breadcrumbs on a forest path. I was very disappointed by this book.

As an introvert, this book is the first I've read that properly defines what it means to be one.

A thoughtful and well-researched book that quietly challenges the way we see personality. The author makes a strong case for the value of introverts in a world that often rewards the opposite. It’s a book that leaves a lasting impression and sparks reflection long after it’s finished.
