One of the chapters of this book talks about my dad. During the years 1992 and 1993, as the head of the national petroleum company of Turkey, he competed against the regional and Western companies to develop oil and natural gas fields in the former Soviet Republics. Under the leadership of President Turgut Ozal, who died on 17 April 1993, his team attempted to secure credible regional and international roles for Turkey, on the eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the outbreak of war in the Persian Gulf. Although Turkey suffered from lack of financial support desperately needed for development projects, he was able to mark one of the few success milestones by establishing the first Turkish oil production effort in Kazakistan (Chapter 9, p.142).
