ah, done! finished volume 5. misao is planning on writing another installment of the ai no mushi series (with the same bug types as riku and ayato from book 2) so something to look forward to after vol. 7! BUT ANYWAYS. THIS IS VOL. 5. LET'S TALK ABOUT VOL. 5! (just like volume 4, this is another high class x high class story)

when i read the summary, i didn't know what i was getting myself into. uuuh, what do you mean ayumu was supposed to be born a girl? basically ayumu (the uke) is a high-class, stick insect/leaf insect type. ayumu's bug origin, specifically, is “yasumatsutobi leaf insect”. the sub-species yasumatsutobi (i'm gonna just shorten this to "ym") gives birth to females bc the ym females would mate with a NON-ym low class leaf insect, and would in turn give birth to a ym female. what's important here is that a ym child (mainly female) can only be born from a ym parent.

however, ayumu was born a ym MALE, which is incredibly rare. it just doesn't happen. and it makes him useless since leaf insect males in general have low reproduction rates and sex drive. his family wants to preserve their ym lineage and he’s fucking it up for them (they’re afraid - well ok mainly grandma - their kind is going to get eradicated if ayumu sticks around because he won't be able to give birth to a ym child. which is why grams forbids him to have sex - don't want 'dem seeds to spread around).

soooo much to fam's dismay that he was born a boy, (grandma was like YUP, YOU WERE A MISTAKE), when he was 14 years old, his fam had him go through a heteromorphic regeneration treatment in order to fix what they considered a problem (bc he’s no good in the reproduction aspect, and he can't produce children of their kind, and that defeats the whole purpose of being a yasu leaf insect since that’s what they are known for). unfortunately, the treatment failed. not knowing what to do with him, his fam was like BRUH RLY? and sent him away to a boarding school during his high school years as a means to chase him out the household.

what’s interesting about his type in general is that it’s easy for him to blend in and go unnoticed in his environment. which can be a good thing, but also a bad thing in his case - since everyone pretty much ignores him. not only that, his bug type gives out no pheromones to attract mates, which is rare for high-class people since they rely on their sense of smell to detect and gain info about the other party. (in the ai no mushi world, if you have sex with someone of a higher class than you, their smell will transfer over to you as a means to let others know that you are their bait/currently taken. so ayumu’s friends theorize that if he has sex with someone, he’ll finally have a scent and thus, will FINALLY be noticed by people…. you understand later why grandma was like, “YOU ARE FORBIDDEN TO HAVE SEX WITH SOMEONE” because in the beginning i was like… bitch, you kicked him out so stfu??)

i like ayumu's character. he's super sweet, and even though he puts on a smile on the outside and APPEARS to be positive, he's actually quite dark (and when he's angsty, MAN, HE IS ANGSTY. he's gets really dark as you read on), and he hates himself for that. he doesn't allow people to know what he's thinking, and is passive with his opinions. many times he'll reflect upon his past and recent events, and it was almost like i was drowning in that dark, lonely place with him. but what i appreciate about his character (which is also a double-edge sword) is that he'll shake his head and tell himself that he can't do anything that can't be changed, and would force himself to forget/to move on. but he can't. and he realizes that he never can forget the very things that hurts him. he keeps everything bottled up, and continues to do so until finally... he can't do it anymore. he struggles with wanting to be loved by his family, to be noticed by his peers, to feel like his life wasn't a mistake, to feel worthy of something. he tries to not hurt the people around him by empathizing with their situation. but in turn, he ends up being the one that's always hurt.

yamato is the seme in the story, and he's also a high class individual who is of the giant purple butterfly type. he's strong, rough, always the center of attention, and is training to be a tennis pro. he's disliked because of his blunt and cold attitude, as well as his infamous bug type. the giant purple butterfly types are known for stealing people's partners and having the same done back to them by their own people. these butterflies are beautiful and are hard to resist sexually, but at the same time, they are detested and looked down upon do to their tendencies to cheat and steal other people lovers. yamato hates this part of himself. even though he doesn't want to sleep around like he does, he can't resist his instinct. his mind says no, but his body acts ahead of him, and when he comes back to his right state of mind, the sexual encounter is over. yamato loves tennis and uses it as a means to relieve his sexual tension, but there's only so much he can do. that's until he ends up being ayumu's roommate and things....... definitely..... happen.

I APPRECIATED THE FACT THAT YAMATO WAS NOT THE TYPICAL MISAO ASSHOLE SEME FROM THE VERY BEGINNING LIKE IN VOL. 1-4 (AND IN AI WA NE/BOUYA, AND PUBLIC SCHOOL). HE'S SWEET AF AND CARING AND MINDFUL OF THE UKE FOR THE MOST PART. LIKE. UGH. SUCH A GOOD GUY. THOUGH HE'S SLOW AF.

// SPOILER //

insert ayumu releasing intense pheromones (who isn't supposed to in the first place given his bug type, BUT was forced to give shiba - yamato's cousin - a bj. swallowing the cum changed his body mechanism in such a way that his pheromones ended up being released) yamato getting into heat because of this, and he ends up raping ayumu. though ayumu feels guilty about this and considers that HE was the one that raped yamato in the first place (wtf bruh). now because he has anisomolpha blood thanks to his father (will learn more about this in the book, basically mama married someone outside the fam's native species), he experience heats every 3 days, and his heat won’t calm down until he has sex. and his heat cycle won’t go away for good until he mates with someone and bears a child. so yamato takes responsibility and essentially fucks him every 3 days, or else everyone and their mama will go after ayumu and rape him due to being attracted by his pheromones.

yamato is dumb af because clearly he likes ayumu but doesn't know the difference between love and following his natural instinct. he does and say stupid shit that saddens and angers ayumu, to the point that i'm like, really? when they break up, well more like "break up" since they weren't really going out in the first place, ayumu starts taking suppressants to help with his heat.

later, because ayumu is told that because he had that “regeneration surgery” to morph into a girl back when he was 14 and that shit failed, well... he thought. his testosterone levels shifted and now, whenever he takes suppressants (which suppresses his male hormones and stimulates his estrogen levels) OR have his prostate gland stimulated during sex (which excites his estrogen levels AND btw, i didn’t mention this before BUT ayumu has a shallow vagina that failed to be complete during the morph. yamato played with it during sex once and yeah. IN THE END, HE LICKS IT. hot, so hot…), his body will naturally shift into that of a female.

WELL SORT OF??? bc changes… below… were made due to the previous treatment, they can’t reverse what’s already there. his body will continue to change and in the end, ayumu will end up having a “vague” gender. BUT! the good thing is that he is able to give birth to a yasumatsutobi child, which is what his family wanted in the first place. but that requires leaving yamato for good and marrying a low-class leaf insect type in order to make that happen...

// END OF SPOILER //

characters from the previous volume show up: sumiya and maya (!). yes, they are hero status. every time. the side characters aren't many, but are fun for the most part. the twins are adorable. shiba and kibe... well. they warm up to you in the end... shiba was annoying af for majority of the book though. but he's supposed to be annoying, so it's okay.

ANYWAYS. don't want to make this super long (who am i kidding, it's long af) but this story is essentially about ayumu and yamato fighting and eventually acknowledging their own instinct. i liked the analogy that misao used towards the end with how instinct is a derivative of love of self (preservation of genes, satisfaction, survival of the fittest, hope for one’s future generation to succeed). the characters contemplate several things related to these terms, such as: if you want something, is it because of instinct? or is it because YOU want it? how do you differentiate the two? if following your desire is instinct and desire is love, then instinct = love? what exactly is love then? why is there a negative connotation to following one’s instinct? is following one’s instinct an undesirable thing, or something to embrace? etc...

this was a good read, there's not anything that i particularly DON'T like in this volume (aside from the lack of mpreg....). and if you read the previous 4 volumes, obviously you're gonna read this. i'm surprised there isn't a drama cd to this yet. if i had to rate my favorite out of the 5 books so far, it'll definitely be:

1. book 4 (character bias, not gonna lie)
2. book 3 (which is really my absolutely favorite. iku is an amazingly, cute character, and touya when he changed for the better - BABY)
3. book 5 (because yamato isn't a douchebag of a seme, which was refreshing)
4. book 2 (shoujo feels everywhere, and even though the pacing was annoying, the ending and epilogue was super, sugary sweet so i was ok)
5. book 1 (even though it’s rated last, the side characters are so much fun, and most of the characters come back in the later volumes)

ANYWAYS, ANYWAYS. see you in volume 6!

MC1 whose origin species as a stick bug has a huge crush on a classmate. He even writes a fantasy dairy about his imagined interaction with his crush, and has tried to change his looks to stand out more so to catch MC2’s attention but due to the nature of stick bug whose specialty is camouflaging, he is extremely hard to be noticed no matter how much he tries. All that changed when MC2 became his roommate. MC2 is the first seme in this series who is not an asshole. While MC1 overthinks, especially in negative thoughts, MC2 just doesn’t think enough, like the day after MC1 broke up with him, he still went to the meetup spot for their previously planned date. After they got back together and MC2 discovered MC1’s fantasy diary, I found it really sweet that MC2 suggested to enact everything in the dairy. It would have been a really fluffy and sweet story if MC1’s negativity isn’t so overwhelming sometimes. But I guess the author just doesn’t want to stoop down to writing a sweet and fluffy story. Oh well.

One of the reasons I love BL as much as I do is that it can combine absolutely ridiculous settings with serious issues and wonderfully moving storylines.

Case in point: this book. The fifth in a series set in a future where in order to survive humans have combined human DNA with that of various insects. As a result, society is now made up of low class and high class insect-hybrid humans, who look human but have some properties that insects do, like pheromones and poison and such.

Based on that somewhat weird setting you get a fairly typical BL story set at a boarding school. One character is part grasshopper (I think), the other is part butterfly. And you know, writing this feels ridiculous! But to take a setting like this and endow those characters with feelings that seem real - and aren't at all different from what actual people feel - is pretty amazing.

The first sexual encounter is dub or non con, depending how you view the pheromon thing. However, it works within the story and thus this is a book very close to perfect. I really loved it from start to finish and noe I want to read the other volumes so very badly... I may actually resort to the ebooks in this case as the first volume seems to be OOP at the moment.
