Personal Review
I really liked the book Football Hero by Tim Green. The book does a good job of developing Ty's character by showing how he matures. I really like the struggle Ty goes through in his daily life, and how he gets rewarded at the end. I did think some parts of the book were a little unrealistic, like how a 6th grade football coach would get fired if he didn't beat their "arch" rival. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and Tim Green's style of writing.
Plot Summary
The book starts with Ty being miserable living with his Uncle Gus and Aunt Virginia. He goes to school and is considered a nerd and gets picked on everyday. One day after school, the football coach comes up to him and asks him to try out for the team and he does. When he gets home late his "parents" are really mad because they wanted him to work at his uncle's cleaning service that day. Ty, his sister Charlotte, and Gus clean Lucy's bar a lot. Lucy is involved in a mob and asks Ty to get information about players from his brother Thane, who plays for the Jets. Ty gets the information, but Lucy and Gus get caught betting illegally, and secret service agents track down Thane and Ty to interrogate them. They all team up to take down the mob when Gus tells them that Thane is hurt when he is really not, and they bet all of the money against the Jets. The mob gets taken down and Gus and his family have to go into witness protection, and Ty chooses to live with his brother.
Characterization
Ty started off in the book as a nerd, who hated his life and living with Gus and Charlotte. As the book goes on, he becomes closer with Thane, and Thane even teaches him to be a wide receiver. Ty finally beats the mean kid on his team that is always picking on him, and catches the game winning touchdown pass against their rival. Ty also helps Thane get out of the mess with the mob, and keeps his career going.
Recommendation
I would recommend this book to a lot of people. First, I would recommend this book to any football fan. I think it would be good for them because the book gives insight on how an NFL locker room actually works, which is something you don't get to see by being a casual fan. I would also recommend this book to kids my age. I would do this because Ty's life is really rough and he still has a positive attitude, so it helps kids my age not take what they have for granted.
