This is the story of Wall Street... the events that shaped it and the characters that made and lost fortunes here. A collection of 50 vignettes of market history that span 450 years, from 1553 to the present day! Sharp's research into historical characters like Jay Gould, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jesse Livermore, B. Baruch, Hetty Green, (the "witch of Wall Street"), Jim Fisk, H.L. and Bunker Hunt, Warren Buffet, John Templeton, "Bet A Million" Gates, and many others provide drama, and unique insights into the people behind the names. A must for market history buffs.
Especially interesting early US history notes about what would become New York City. From Wampum to Wall Street, Sharp meticulously delivers the goods- or more precisely, the bads. Greed, corruption, revenge, selfishness-these are apparently at the heart of the US economy. Although Sharp does a great job of recounting it rather humorously, I couldn't help but to find it all rather disturbing, in keeping with the economic recession as of late- and how that directly effects the lives of my family and friends. The manipulation of the economy by powerful hands in the quest for personal gain over the greater societal good is simply repulsive and unfortunately has a deep seated history in the USA- and perhaps overall human nature.
