An Apple Valley Novel Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller needs to stay lost. Her eccentric aunt’s home in Apple Valley is the perfect place to forget her cheating ex-fiancé and get her no-longer-perfect life back under control. Plus, it couldn’t hurt to fix up the house and turn its neglected orchard into a thriving business. And if Apricot can keep deputy sheriff Simon Baylor’s two lively young daughters out of mischief, maybe she can ignore that he’s downright irresistible.
I like this series. It is full of fun, good characters, drama and romance. It is also a clean read.
Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller decides to hide out at her Aunt Rose Orchard. She used to spend some weeks every summer before college. Apricot was supposed to get married and be on her honeymoon but her groom showed up 2 hours late to wedding.
She is driving a old truck and pulling a trailer wearing her pink wedding dress when it breaks down only 3 miles from her Aunt's place so she gets her bike out and rides it because she destroyed her phone.
She ends up being held hostage till the cop comes and she has sworn off men.
Simon has moved to Apple Valley after his wife died before his twin girls were one year old. He is a member of the Police. He is attracted to Apricot right off. His daughters are really cute.
The other two policeman in Apple Valley had there own romances in the first two books of the series.
Apricot owns her own business in LA. She has given the last 5 years to her fiance. She is not ready for another relationship. She fights it.
Someone dropped a box of kittens at the farm, because there is no animal shelter in town and the next town over has one but it is a kill one.
I liked Apricot and her family but I would not want to eat cow tongue either. Just saying the name alone turns me off.
I like to read books by Shirlee McCoy and will look for more of her books to read in the future.
I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Kensington. In return I agreed to give honest review of The Orchard at the Edge of Town.
This novel has been a really pleasant reading, is so romantic, sweet, funny, with many interesting and bizarre characters and a set very special. I would love to live in Apple Valley, move into Aunt Rose's old house to enjoy the sight of her magnificent orchard! The author has created a small community very friendly, cheerful, rich in traditions and legends, a little gossipy but you know that every country is so. Simon could not have chosen a better place to raise her twins. His wife died when the girls did not even have one years old. She was born and raised in Apple Valley and he thought it would be nice for his little girls grow up in the country where their mother was known and loved. Here lives also his sister-in-law Daisy who could help him in reconciling his job as deputy sheriff with the care of his daughters. Apricot comes to Apple Valley yet wearing her wedding dress: boyfriend was not able to be faithful not even their wedding day. She's runned away with her wrecked van and has taken refuge at her aunt Rose's home, when she's a child had been there so many times. She wants to be alone for to decide what to do with her future. The last thing she wants is another relationship but meets Simon, the man with the greenest eyes she'd ever seen ..... Apricot and Simon are great characters: the chemistry between them is perfect, even if neither of them wants a new relationship, the attraction they feel for each other is strong. Right from birth she had to fight with the extravagance of her parents: her name (Apricot Sunshine), she grew up in a commune, has never had a stable, a family security. Stability, security, serenity are the things she wants with all of herself and that her almost husband could not give her. Luckily she found out before exchanging vows. Simon's heart is very hurt, he feels guilty for not being able to save his wife. Perhaps Apricot is the right person to heal his wounds It's the third book in the series "Apple Valley" but can easily be read as a stand alone: I have not had any trouble. This was my first time reading a book by this author and I can say with certainty that it will not be my last!
I recommend it to those who love contemporary romantic novels. This is the perfect read for the summer.
3.5 stars.
ARC received via Netgalley.
3.5 stars. This is one of these simply delicious stories. Without too much drama, without too many complications, without silly repetitions(ok, maybe the word “muscles” had been a bit overused)and with good dialogues and a touch of humor. Despite being set in a small town where everyone knows everyone, it does not fall into the cliche of the busybodies and manipulatives characters that handle the story at will. Here, the MCs are those who carry the weight of story. It is refreshing that they are so sincere and don't allow the misunderstandings get between them. There are over characters, of course, but they contribute with a bit of humor and drama to the story, nothing more. I liked it. It is a sweet, unpretentious and pleasant story to read. Recommended for those who loves the stories without complications and a little sweet set in small towns.
I loved this book! So some of the characters names were well unique but the story was well written and I really enjoyed it. It had some funny parts and the characters drew me in from the beginning.
Apricot left her fiancé before the wedding because she found out he was unfaithful so she heads to her Aunt Roses house and her first day there she meets Simon. You can see that he is enchanted by Apricot and wants to know more about her. Although Apricot is getting over her failed relationship their is something about Simon that calls to her.
I adored Simons twin daughters the most. They were cute and Hilarious. I couldn't help myself when Simons sister in law became all sorts of crazy. I kept repeating wow she has issues while I was reading.
This was a sweet love story that wasn't rushed in having kids or getting married. And shockingly their was no sex but that didn't bother me since the story was so well done. It's like I didn't even notice.
I really did enjoy this book. This is the first book I have read in this series and I am hooked! I need to read the other books now. This really was a great quick read.
This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. After finding out her fiancé cheated on her just before their wedding, Apricot runs off in her old truck, pulling her old silver trailer behind her. Just a few miles short of her destination, her truck breaks down. She takes her old 1940s Schwinn bicycle off the trailer and bicycles to her Aunt Rose's empty house in the orchard at the edge of town. Apricot grew up helping her aunt with all kinds of herbs and now runs A Thyme to Heal in Los Angeles. Actually, the business now pretty much runs itself and makes her LOTS of money, leaving her able to move on to new things if she wants. I really enjoyed this book and the interactions between Apricot, deputy sheriff Simon and his twin daughters. I love the crazy people and the kittens. Ms. McCoy is an excellent author!
I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the series but the first I have read. I really enjoyed it. Full of fun, quirky characters. I loved the description of the town and most of the people are there to help out in any way. But what would a little town be without the little blue haired know it alls. Someone has to spread gossip. A fun read.
This is a fun small town romance. I loved Apricot and thought she was a good match for Simon, the sheriff of Apple Valley. There are kids, kittens, hippies and other quirky characters in this heart-warming tale. I have never read Shirlee McCoy before, so call me a new fan.
I enjoyed this book. It was sweet and relatively clean (a few mild cuss words) I did find the extended family rather annoying but they were supposed to be. Nothing about this book made it really unputdownable but still a pleasant enough read I'd read the others in this series!
What a pretty little book this turned out to be. I loved the in-depth characters, descriptions, and the wild relatives. I would recommend and read again. Also, I want some chamomile tea now.
The last book in the series sees Simon, one of the Deputies in the quaint Washington town of Apple Valley, bringing up his twin daughters after the death of his wife several years before.
I love this series, romance at its heart, people not taking a chance on love because they've been hurt in the past but maybe, just maybe things may work out?
Apricot, a successful business woman flees to Apple Valley after she walks out on her wedding after discovering her husband to be in having an affair. She drives to her Aunt's house in the town where no one can find her, so she can forget about men. Events conspire against her and she meets Simon and his adorable daughters, can she afford to take down the barriers shes put around her heart?
Then there's Daisy, Simon's sister in law who we've met before in the previous book. She helps him look after his daughters but is she the right person to be doing that?
I'm disappointed that this is the last full length book, there's a novella which is part of compendium of stories. Apple Valley has some interesting characters!
I would have given this book more stars if I'd been able to, its that good. I'll be looking for more books by this author for sure.
When Apricot walks out on her wedding after discovering her fiance has been cheating with her personal assistant, she retreats to her aunt's home in Apple Valley. Apricots used to spend time each summer there and is eager to restore the orchard and the home to its former glory. Simon is raising two daughters on his own after his wife passed. Their attraction is fast and fun. Apricot brings joy and a bit of freedom with her. There's a great sense of community embracing this series and the way residents of Apple Valley supports their children is beautiful. I love this couple and this series.
Apricot is on the run, running from the simple sweet life that she thought she had, the one that went up in flames when she realized her finace was cheating. Now she is determined to hide away until it's safe to resume her life. What she never counted on was a police deputy with twin daughters that tug at her heart.
Apricot returns to a small town after her wedding is cancelled. She meets Simon who is the father of two little girls. The small town characters are fun and relatable to. This book is third in the series.
I was between books, but wanted an easy read, easy to pick up kind of book. This was it. I don't usually read romance books, but it was a nice step away from my usual genre.
This is a fun story with interesting characters. They all had issues of some sort but we're woven together to make the family crazy like most families are. I recommend this book for an afternoon reading.
The Orchard at the Edgeof Town by Shirlee McCoy is a super sweet romance between two very appealing protagonists. This third installment in the Apple Valley series is another fun, feel good novel that old and new fans are sure to love.
After canceling her wedding to her cheating fiancé, Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller retreats to her aunt's house in Apple Valley to figure out what she wants to do next. She is a successful businesswoman who grew up on a commune with several siblings and squabbling, eccentric parents, and she wants nothing more than a normal, calm and peaceful life. Her unconventional arrival in town stirs up plenty of gossip but it is her involvement with Deputy Simon Baylor and his twin daughters Evie and Rori that adds unexpected complications to both their lives.
Apricot is a caring and compassionate woman who is firmly grounded in reality despite her rather offbeat upbringing. She eagerly left the chaos of the commune behind and set about creating a serene life for herself. Although her family did not particularly embrace her ex-fiancé, she was content with their stable and serene relationship. After finding out he was cheating on her, Apricot did not hesitate to end the relationship and although she is now a bit lonely, she does not regret her decision. The quiet atmosphere in Apple Valley is just what she needs to reassess her life and figure out what comes next. Apricot is surprised by her attraction to Simon and while she feels it is a little too soon to become involved with another man, she finds it hard to resist the charming widower.
Simon moved to Apple Valley after his wife's death and his daughters have thrived in the quiet town. He is grateful he gets to spend extra time with them and he is thankful that his sister-in-law Daisy is willing to help out with the girls. While Simon is no longer mourning the death of his wife, he still feels guilty for overlooking just how troubled she was. Although he has dated, he has not really been interested in pursuing a relationship with anyone until he meets Apricot. He is immediately drawn to her and even though he has a few reservations about getting serious with her, Simon is willing to explore the possibility of a future with her. However, just as they begin dating, Apricot begins having doubts due to the arrival of her wacky family and Daisy's escalating shenanigans.
The Orchard at the Edgeof Town is a wonderful addition to Shirlee McCoy's marvelous Apple Valley series. Simon and Apricot are well developed, sympathetic characters that are easy to love. Although their romance is low key, there is no mistaking the genuine and heartfelt emotion they have for one another. Simon's daughters are adorable and the two little charmers easily steal the scene on more than one occasion. It is another heartwarming stop in Apple Valley that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys cozy, homespun romance novels.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had this book on my Kindle for a month or so before I read it because the title didn't stir my desire to read it. Once I got started though I loved the book. I am sorry I put off reading it. I wasn't aware this was part of a series until I got to the part of another couple and then realized it had to be. So this book is a stand alone. You are either destined to love or hate someone named Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller and after meeting her character in this book, I love her. She is such a fun woman who has a great view on life. I like that she isn't a door mat character who lets others step on her. She isn't afraid to say what she feels and she admits she has made mistakes. She has had a very quirky upbringing and turned out remarkable well balanced considering her family are a bunch of hippies. Right off the bat when Apricot gets in town she meets the handsome sexy deputy Simon Baylor. Sparks fly on both sides. I like that this isn't one of those stories where the whole way through the couple hates each other and isn't nice to once another and yet suddenly it ends with happily ever after. Neither of them are really looking for a relationship but they do keep being drawn to one another. Simon has a set of adorable twin daughter's who cause a lot of smiles. There are so many wonderful characters in this book that you really get a feel for the small town living and want to move Apple Valley yourself. Even better this is a romance where they don't use sex to cover up a lack of plot line. There are a few kisses but no sex scenes which takes nothing away from the romance. But even with her family and his family getting in the way, Apricot and Simon manage to realize they were meant to be. Just really a great book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys women's fiction.
I was at that point where I needed a sweet and heartwarming romance, and this popped up in my reading queue. Sometimes the reading gods are spot on – they certainly were here.
Apricot has retreated to her aunt’s house in Apple Valley after a breakup. She’s a successful businesswoman despite her unconventional upbringing and squabbling family, and the peace and quiet of Apple Valley is perfect for her to regroup.
Simon is the town deputy, and moved with his young daughters to Apple Valley after his wife’s death as his sister in law is there and able to help out with the twins. He’s been dealing with the guilt surrounding his wife’s troubles and their life together, but the grief is more fondness: all of his emotional energy is poured into their children, the twins Evie and Rori.
Neither was seriously looking for another relationship, and you have to admit that twins add a level of chaos to anyone’s life, but both Simon and Apricot are well-suited and wholly attracted. Both are well-developed, sympathetic characters that are easy to imagine in your own neighborhood. In fact, the ability of the characters to communicate their own fears and misgivings, as well as some pretty clever insets from the townsfolk feels natural and possible. A wonderful story that left me with a smile, and leaves me interested in the earlier titles in the series.
I received an eARC copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I hate being the one giving a low rating when all the other reviews are 4 and 5 stars, but unfortunately the book didn't work its magic on me the way it did on the other readers. The story itself was the kind of story I love, especially since it was a clean romance with no sex scenes (bonus point for this!) but I was never completely hooked and pulled into the story. I can't really say what it was that didn't work, because there isn't one particular reason for my not being hooked. I liked some parts of the story but I never completely felt part of the characters' world, like I usually do when I truly enjoy a book. It is a good story, a feel-good romance with two adorable twins and a trio of kittens, but I felt there was something missing—that spark that would make me care for the characters and I had to force myself to finish it, because I was hoping for more and really really wanted to like it. At times, I found it a little slow, with long descriptive scenes (or inner monologues) and not much action, whereas other times it seemed like things happened a little too fast. All this said, the book has lots of high reviews, so maybe it's just me. If you like clean, feel-good romance, you should give this book a try. It could be your next top favorite read, even though it didn't swept me off my feet.
***I received a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review***
When I started reading this book, I had no idea it was a series. It looked like a fun, light read and that is what I was looking for. I had no idea I would laugh and fall in love with the characters.
Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller leaves her fiancee at the alter after finding out that he has been cheating on her. She jumps into her old truck after throwing things in the ancient airstream and heads to hide out in Orchard Valley at the home of her Aunt Rose. When "Henry" breaks down, she climbs out of the old truck in her puffy pink dress and jumps on her old Schwin bicycle to ride the rest of the way to the farm. Once there, a neighbour holds her at shotgun point to wait while the police show up to arrest the "trespasser". The fun begins. Apricot meets the deputy Simon Bayler and there are sparks. When she finds a box on her porch with 3 kittens she tries to find a home for them and ends up keeping the ugly one that she names Handsome and pawning off the other two with Simon's twin daughters Evie and Rory. Even though she has no desire to start a new relationship, the feelings between her and Simon continue to grow. Throw in Simon's crazy sister-in-law, Apricot's parents Lilac and Hubert and the neighbour and the story is a lot of fun. I am now looking forward to the next book in the series so I can find out what happens next in Orchard Valley.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
In "The Orchard at the Edge of Town", we meet Apricot. Apricot is fun and full of life, she's kind and generous, she does all she can to help others and she is bubbly and sunny. She's all around a great person but beneath the sunshine is pain and hurt. While visiting Apple Valley to mend her broken heart, she meets Simon. He's a widower with twin girls and is one of the more perfect men around - both in looks and in actions. He's a real charmer but is honest and truthful in all he says and does. He and Apricot are fun together. They both smile more and enjoy each other's company. The twins are cute, although they did come across younger than they were supposed to be, but it doesn't distract or harm the overall story. I loved that Ms. McCoy didn't make the twins perfect and that Apricot was honest about how much energy it took to take care of them. Often in stories, when children are looked after, the heroine can do no wrong and never admits it tough work. The other characters we meet make this town a colorful, if not a bit nutty, place to live. There's even a crazy lady trying to make trouble for the two lovebirds. Ms. McCoy has written a tale that is clean, refreshing and fun. I was smiling and chuckling throughout and enjoyed it immensely. (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

Apricot and Simon seemed to go together from the beginning. It was simply the problems of the present each of them had to work through that kept them apart; the end of a long-running relationship, an increasingly interfering sister-in-law, an off-the-wall family, a set of twins, and a rat-like cat who seemed to somehow involve himself in some of Apricot's trials.
I have fully enjoyed this series so far. My one frustration was the length to which Apricot continued mentioning, and letting Lionel determine her decisions. Yes he was the reason she was in Apple Valley, but at a point in the book I felt enough was enough. As for Simon, he focused much of his thoughts on his relationship with the twins' mother. He had blinders on regarding his sister-in-law, though he knew Daisy was beginning to step over the line as far as raising his daughters was concerned and put off the conversation he needed to have.
Of course, had McCoy done as I had wished, their story would have been a novella and I wouldn't want that, so I sat back, pushed my frustration aside and cheered Apricot and Simon on. Don't let that little frustration deter you from this story or series. It's a sweet and enjoyable series, with that small town feel and memorable, recurring characters.
Who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashion romance? I can tell you who … this girl right here. The Orchard At The Edge of Town is a great contemporary, new-adult, fiction novel written by Shirley McCoy. It has all the great parts of a romance novel – a jilted bride, a grieving widow cop, two cute little girls and a whole lot of romance. Doesn’t it sound great?
McCoy does a fabulous job of setting the scene in the beautiful town of Apple Valley, Washington, where Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller seeks refuge from her failed wedding disaster. However, when the hot Simon Baylor comes to her rescue …. her heart is slowly mended. The dialogue between the characters is great and will have you laughing at no time. I absolutely loved Apricot’s no nonsense attitude and the way she handled Simon …. until she meetings his two beautiful little girls …. and the kittens …
The Orchard At The Edge of Town is a great read for anyone who just wants romance, a bit of laughter and a nice easy read. McCoy writes a beautiful tale, of love, laughter and friendship that will have a smile plastered on your face and your heart glowing with love, with this good read! It would make a nice addition to your To-Be-Read Shelf.
I have really enjoyed Shirlee McCoy's "Apple Valley" series, but "The Orchard At The Edge of Town" is my absolute favorite so far!
How can you not love a main character named Apricot Sunshine Devereux-Miller? This feisty little spitfire flees L.A. after a disastrous wedding fiasco (complete with pink fluffy dress and an old broke-down truck) and finds herself seeking refuge at her Aunt Rose's house in Apple Valley, Washington. And when the neighbor thinks she's an intruder, Apricot's knight in shining armour (or shiny badge) arrives in the form of Simon Baylor. And if the handsome deputy sheriff wasn't good enough reason to stay in Apple Valley, his two adorable twin daughters are! But can Apricot overcome her wedding fears and can Simon overcome his grief for his late wife to find a new love for themselves?
Shirlee McCoy does a great job gifting readers with a delightful romance that is full of humour, small town life, and a lot of love. There is a bit of mystery threaded through the story, and there is a crazy ex-sister-in-law and loopy hippie parents to deal with, but the two main characters preserve in their quest for "True Love." I loved this book and I think you will too. Can't wait for the next Apple Valley book!
