A chance discovery and a ruined life changed everything, returning Hal to his rightful place and unlocking the powers that he had only barely been aware of. Among his own kind, unleashed to wage a secret war without restriction or control, he inadvertently sets himself on a path that will ultimately risk his own ruin.
Cold and emotionless, unrestrained by conscience or morality, Hal finds him being driven further and further from his own kind. Influenced and ultimately corrupted by newfound allies, his closest companions are forced to save him from his own addictive personality and the grip of an enemy they had never known existed.
As shadowy forces bring their influence to bear, Hal and his companions are forced ever deeper into a conflict they are ill-equipped to fight.
I have to disagree with the previous comment, I wouldn't class this as a sci fi book. I personally see it as more of a dark fantasy drama or maybe fantasy thriller. 4 stars because I thought the plot and pace was great, with a few mysteries here and there to keep you wanting more, and that the characters were well developed and interesting. The author does a good job I think on making you get attached to the main character, despite Hal being emotionless and void. I found this story universe, filled with the vampire families, the hunters and other character groups, to be original and unique which can be difficult to find in these genres of book. I think the author has written something that helps to make vampires scary and dark again (after what twilight did to them) as well as brings in interesting themes and questions (coupled with vicious fight scenes to pick up the pace when needed). What I found while reading, and what personally really interests me, was the questions about the main characters morality. These 'good guys', are they doing the wrong things but for the right reasons? Or is Hal doing the right thing but for the wrong reasons? Im just waiting now for the next one in the series to come out so I can try to answer these questions and to see what happens next after the dramatic climax.
