One of the first books to be written by an Auschwitz survivor, this narrative is the more powerful because of Levi’s choice to recount his experiences only according to the information that he personally had available at the time, and in an analytical, distanced manner. His stark, drama-free descriptions of the rules, behaviours and conditions prevalent at the camp are chilling. The responses, from 1976, to the “FAQs” of the time, are enlightening, and embued with his vocation to inform the world of this history.
