Beware! You’ll be able to smell the vile stench of Mr. Pong’s Cheap Cheese Emporium just by reading about it. It’s that smelly. In fact, it’s the stinkiest and most foul-whiffing place in the whole wide world. You have been warned!
However, if you do feel brave enough to step inside the cheese shop and meet the horrible Mr. and Mrs. Pong, not only will you find that they smell just as bad, you’ll also discover a girl called Cauliflower Cheese, a contented mouse, the terrifying Aunty Louder, and a very curious creature who goes by the name of Red Head.
What’s that? You want to know what The Top Secret Cheese is? Well, I can’t tell you that. It is top secret after all.
Mr. Wolf is a freelance cartoon illustrator and the author of three funny children's books that grown-ups can enjoy too.
He spent several years providing entertaining cartoon workshops for children and adults at various arts centres and libraries throughout the UK, including two popular events for The Big Draw Festival, which is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing. These days, however, Mr. Wolf prefers sharpening pencils alone in his lair.
Being called Mr. Wolf, he gets a little frustrated with people always asking him for the time, but he's learnt to live with it.
This is a superior story that reminded me of being lost in the voice of a well known actor, one all deep and familiar. Curled up somewhere you’ve known for probably your whole life, the comfort means that you can easily abandon your surroundings and be taken away by the characters.
This book thrives on its characters, each completely wonderful. Whilst reminiscent of the most well-loved from childhood they have enough of their own flavour to establish themselves in all their delight and horror. I would’ve loved this book as a kid. Full of intrigue and jeopardy, the story unfolds its elements skilfully and authentically. You cannot fake this stuff. As each character is introduced the story becomes richer, brimming with warmly chaotic humour and the underlying darkness of the most enduring children’s stories. Mostly, I liked the fact that it does not condescend to our fellow humans in younger bodies. As someone continuing to attempt to do a half decent impression of an adult that thread back to little me was truly stirred by this book. It would make an amazing audiobook - these words jump off the page and demand to be read out loud! A fun time for any fully or partially grown person guaranteed.
Father-daughter review... The Top Secret Cheese is a well done kid's story that I appreciated not only for the quality time spent with my daughter, but the laughs and the colorful characters. I am certain I will be looking to other Mr. Wolf books in the future.
Now here is the more exciting part of this review:
I like the cheese book (we call it the cheese book just because). The Pongs are mean funny ugly and I bet stinky too. I don’t know why they are so mean to Flower. My favorite part is either when the pongs get covered in cheese or, when auntie Louder gets freaked out because of the mice and passes out as the mice carry her to taxi. Red Head is also very funny.I like how when he is made he just grabs random face pieces and puts them on then gets clothes. I feel bad for Flower because the Pongs always boss her around like do this do that. The Pongs are like Cinderella’s evil stepmother and flower is like Cinderella. Except in a down and dirty version. Now let’s talk about Mousey. As you can tell by the name he is a mouse. He is also very helpful. I think Red Head is definitely my favorite though, he is really funny. Thank you for reading my review I appreciate it. I hope you read The Top Secret Cheese and like it. By Cora Gardner 10 years
Finished reading this to my daughter and she is now going to review the book.
"I liked Mr. Pong, even though he is the bad guy, her favourite part was when they got covered in cheese. I didn't like the stinky cheese and I wouldn't eat it. The mouse was very funny and I liked Stink Street. The book is funny and I laughed in my head, it was very funny when Mr. Pong was put in the cow poo. I also liked doing the screaming parts whilst my dad read the book."
I am pretty sure Mr. Wolf is a re-incarnation of Roald Dahl, that dark humour, vile characters and all round grossness is there, Mr Wolf is the complete package as he does his own illustrations. This is a great book to read to your kids, I am looking forward to Mr. Wolf's next book.
If we actually lived in a meritocracy and not a world dominated by the time old principle of ‘it’s-not-what-you-know-it’s-who-you-know’ Mr. Wolf would be giving David Walliams a run for his money for the title of Roald Dahl’s natural successor.
Owing a small debt to ‘The Twits’, ‘The Top Secret Cheese’ is a hilarious romp of a children’s book that adults will find a lot to love about too. It has truly fiendish baddies, a plucky heroine, a hilarious animal sidekick (who may just have been my favourite character) and huge dollop of magic and charm.
The illustrations are great, too, and perfectly complement the story; I just wish there had been more of them.
Before I write this review, a disclosure: I have written two books with Harry Whitewolf and have been a fan for a while now, so of course I'm going to give this book a 11 out of 5 cheese-star review.
What is there to like? you ask. Well, lovable characters, fantastic art -- not to mention the book is free. Oh, did I mention the cheese?
Just a kids book, you say. Why no! Just take a shot of your favorite alcohol every time you see the word cheese in print and you'll find yourself doubled-over with adult-type giggles.
For me, the best part of this book was the Pongs -- a despicable family of cheese-loving, child-hating, misers and misanthropes. They continue the long tradition in British literature of miserable parents and foster parents...who get what's coming to them? Well, read and find out.
So, if you like cheesy literature in the best sense of the words, then dip your literary nacho into this book! [Warning: the book is not actually cheese. Nachos sold separately.]
A cute story! The evil couple were perfectly horrible villains who eventually get what they deserve. The heroes were likable, though Red Head was weird and amusing in his own way. I enjoyed the illustrations scattered throughout. They really gave the story some character. Overall, fun read!
I loved this story and the pictures that went with it. So imaginitive. Now, I could tell you all about the secret cheese... but it's a secret. Just read the book ☺, it's a fast read and I found it pretty funny.
