Cat begins training Illyana. They encounter S’ym, the Lieutenant of Belasco. Eventually they escape and end up in the Savage Land, where Cat kills a two headed sabertooth for food. The next day Cat makes Illyana run with her to their destination and begin sword/knife combat training.

Ororo appears in her astral form and condemns Cat, and ultimately cuts her off. The two climb up Belasco’s Citadel and encounter Nightcrawler, who’s working for Belasco. Kitty kills him. The two leave to Belasco’s alter where the dimensional barriers between earth and limbo are the thinnest. The two travel through the walls/dimensions and appear to be greeted by 616 Kitty, pulling them through.

It was an illusion and it’s Belasco instead pulling them through. He turns Cat into an actual Cat and will begin training Illyana the following day.

Storm is upset with everything that’s happened and vows to kill the both of them

More grossness.

Here, Kitty basically teaches Illyana that to survive the trauma of Belasco’s abuse, she needs to become cold, closed off and shut down her empathy. In the end, that doesn’t work for poor Kitty, reduced, in an instant, to a base creature by her abuser. The eating Nightcrawler was ultra grim, even when off panel. A whole lot of horrible. Probably some of Buscema’s best artwork. Glynis Wein on colours likely had a lot of trouble in this issue due to blood and the like, as the comic code was still technically in effect.

This was so sad and wonderful at the same time. I love parallel stories and bringing characters like Ororo and Kitty into this story is great because they're my favorites rn and I can't help feeling sad for this story.

I love to think of Cat training Illyana while wandering through the wastelands Dark Tower style.
