I was handed a water-stained copy of this book many years ago whilst visiting my favourite antiquarian bookshop situated in the Central Borough of Hackney, London, England. Knowing of my propensity for humour and the unusual, it was recommended to me by the proprietor of the shop - a Doctor H C Bird - a diminutive old man with a beaky nose and a high pitched voice, with whom I liked to have the odd natter. With an aversion to science-fiction, I initially perused the pages of this chronicle with a prejudicial attitude. However, encouraged by Doctor Bird to read it with an open mind, and utilising the brightly coloured feather bookmark that I discovered wedged in its pages; I came to the unsettling conclusion that it was not science fiction at all, but a factual historical document. Alas, the antiquarian bookshop has long since disappeared, the building is now a coffee house, and the eccentric proprietor has flown - who knows where?
