New York Times bestselling author and award-winner, Scarlett Dawn, is the mastermind behind the Forever Evermore fantasy series, the Origin paranormal dystopian stories, the Vampire Crown paranormal romance thrillers, the Mark science fantasy saga, and the Lion Security contemporary romance series.
She lives in the Midwest, adores her music loud, and demands her fries covered in melted cheese.
Move over for the new Dynamic Duo in town and please note, they are hotter than blazes, have more attitude and style than the class troublemaker and are determined to earn their place in the Elite Guard at any cost. Yep, sounds like something Scarlett Dawn would write. Welcome to Game Master in a world that is only one Skeleton Key away from Earth.
On the run from her father’s killers, Arizona can only hope the skeleton key she found will open the door to safety. What she finds is another realm, a talking frog and an opportunity to sue her training to good purpose, because clearly she is not going home anytime soon. What she hadn’t planned on was being paired with the hot guy, Lucifer who revs her engines and raises her blood pressure with his attitude. They discover they make the perfect fighting machine, and take their snarky attitudes and badly timed humor along just to aggravate their superiors. When you are the best of the best, I guess that’s okay, but when they discover there is more to their great teamwork than just two well-honed fighters, expect some tantalizing heat and some feathers to fly!
What I would give for just five minutes inside Scarlett Dawn’s head, because once again, she had me hook, line and sinker from start to finish! Humor, heat and passion rule the day as Lucifer and Arizona become a fabulous new duo to be reckoned with! Total entertainment, hands down!

Magically transferred to another world, Arizona Creed, finds herself orphaned and running for her life with a talking frog in her back pack.
Lucifer is an exiled member of a royal family and apparently the second born of twins to the king of his birth country in this magical world. He recently became ward to two small baby girls and is on his way home with them, for the first time, when Arizona jumps in front of his carriage.
With the smarts and skills her assassin father taught her, Arizona builds a new life for herself in Lucifer’s home. Arizona and Lucifer train together, honing their skills. These skills grab the attention of the elite Royal Guard and ends up getting them blackmailed into the Game. The Game is a competition to decide if they can become members of the Royal Guard.
Fabulous fun, Lucifer and Arizona permeate the pages with a connection that runs soul deep.
I flat out loved it. The banter, the characters, the originally kick butt plot, Game Master is going on my favorite, re-read shelf.

"They were good, some of the best actually, but my father had trained me. They had only gotten lucky when they killed him--three assassins versus one. I was an assassin's daughter."
Run.
That's what Arizona does when her original methods fail her...it's either that, or be caught.
Not going to happen.
So, she runs. And funny enough, hides.
It's where she hides that truly changes everything.
The Skeleton Key.
Once through the door opened by a mysterious skeleton key, things don't appear as they once were...in fact, she finds herself in an entirely different realm. A magic realm. Complete with talking frogs and human-eating creatures. What's a girl to do?
Run.
Until running is no longer an option. At some point she will have to fight.
"They hadn't been trained to survive. Lucifer and I had. We were not clean and straightforward. We fought dirty and brutally."
Fabulous little novella! Once again, Dawn has sucked me in to this alternate universe that I want nothing more than to read more about. The saying is, "a good story is never long enough", well...it holds true with The Game Master. I loved it.
It's a novella. I'm not a fan of novella because of their shortness but I'll put myself through torture just for Ms. Dawn.
With that said if you're a fan of her Forevermore, you'll appreciate the relationship between these two characters. I was a little disappointed because the book seemed to jump years, days, and topics with little to no explanation plus no development between the characters.
I know it's novella but having just finished Moon Mark, I was expecting a little more development. Plus the description reads about a test of her true heart.... Yeah, no test really happens. It just seemed the description really stretched the story a bit.
Love Ms. Dawn but was a little disappointed with the development. Though I did love the Lucifer and Arizona.
I really liked this! It was not at all what I expected. I think these characters and the premise for the book would have made an excellent full length novel. They could have developed a lot more of the relationship during the first few years and then sent them on at least their first live mission together. I hope the author decides to add more to this series! (I'm not quite sure how the Skeleton Key series works though since it's a ton of different novels/novellas by various authors.)
A quick fun read. As with all the Skeleton Key stories it can be read as a stand alone story. Enjoy a trip to another universe with talking frogs and magic keys. Funny and heartfelt with a little steam a great way to spend a few hours
Game Master was a quick fun read, full of action, emotion and of course, a bit of romance. Arizona, on the run from men trying to kill her, happens upon a skeleton key that leads into another world where frogs talk, magic is real, and Lucifer isn't necessarily the devil. She's stuck in this world, away from the earth she knows and loves, but when it comes down to it, will she even want to leave? I enjoyed the novella, which is part of a bigger series of novellas The Skeleton Key, but for me, it did miss in a couple areas. To me, this one would have quite simply worked better as a full length novel. As always, I found myself transported to the world Ms. Dawn created, but all too soon, it was over and I was left wanting more. We caught a quick glimpse of the magic of the world, enough to really spark my interest but not enough that I felt like I knew the world. And I wanted to know it. There were a couple instances where soemthing was mentioned, like a dangerous forest but we never got to find out more about it or the creatures inside. Similarly, I wanted to know more about both Arizona and Lucifer - about their pasts and their present. That said, I did love the main characters in this story. They were unique in different while at the same time they reminded me of my favorite couple in Scarlett Dawn writing, Lily and Ezra. It made it impossible not to fall for these characters too. Arizona was confident and strong while remaining human and relatable. Lucifer was thoughtful and kind but with a bit of mystery and a lot of sex appeal. And Kingsley. There isn't much more I can say about him aside from the fact that I very much loved our resident talking frog.

Thoughts: I loved this story and wish it were longer! One of the best parts was the wings. I would totally be like Arizona, staring and very distracted by them and craving my own lol. The whole concept of the skeleton key opening a door to another realm is fascinating, and I wonder if it's just a normal door but becomes a portal when a skeleton key is used or is it always a portal? Anyway, this was my first taste of the Skeleton Key series and I can't wait to read more. The relationship between Lucifer and Arizona in the beginning is completely platonic yet they have this awareness of each other that makes it seem like they share one mind. It's almost like every action is choreographed ahead of time, even though we all know that isn't the case. I know I would love to have them both as friends, they're witty and funny, especially with each other. Just wish there was more, I would love to follow these two through many books (hint, hint lol).

I really enjoyed this story very much even though both main characters annoyed the hell out of me with their craziness. And just for your information, the talking frog is my soulmate.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Scarlett Dawn so I HAD to read her installment in the Skeleton Key series, Game Master. I think this may have taken the place of my favorite Dawn read! In Game Master, Arizona Creed has just buried her father when a group of assassins chase her through the streets. She finds herself at a dead end with a locked door in front of her when she finds a glass skeleton key buried in the rubbish. Using it, she opens the door to find herself on the front stoop of a cabin in the middle of the woods and a talking frog as her guide.
Arizona is an interesting character. She’s fierce! Raised by her father and taught to be an assassin, she can take care of herself. When he is killed, she’s furious and ready for revenge. Then she finds herself stuck in another world with no way to get back and nothing but her grief to keep her company.
Lucifer finds her and takes her in. Together they raise the twin girls he took in after their mother died. But none of this is enough for Arizona. Her life lacks direction, purpose. That is until the Guard shows up and invites her and Lucifer to participate in the game to win a position with the Guard.
I liked this story. I like the characters, the world, and the game. It was an interesting concept and while there is a touch of romance, it isn’t the focus. The focus is on Arizona finding her way out of her grief. And Kingsley ♥︎ I LOVE Kingsley! He is probably my favorite character in the story. If you enjoy paranormal romance and fantasy, I highly recommend you grab a copy of Game Master.

Game Master is author Scarlett Dawn's contribution to the Skeleton Key book series. Each book in the series is a standalone fantasy read by a different author and each story comes with the promise of a HEA. Game Master is a quick, enjoyable read that fantasy fans will love. There's pulse pounding action and as promised - a fun and satisfying HEA.
What I Loved: Arizona Creed is a rock solid heroine and if Scarlett Dawn writes anything else in her POV I will happily read it. Filled with angst but not ruled by it, Arizona has spunk and I totally bought into this teenager falling into another realm and thriving. The action scenes with Arizona and her partner-in-crime Lucifer kept me on the edge of my seat.
What I Didn't Love:Game Master is heavy on the fantasy/action and light on the love so those looking for heavy romance may be disappointed. A few more scenes of flirtation or a slightly stronger build up to Arizona and Lucifier's romantic relationship would have pushed this novella to an almost perfect read.
Favorite Quotes:
"Simply put - I was a damn scary bitch."
"I physically felt myself splinter. Felt the ripping tear inside my chest. Felt the burning sensation that made my breath catch as memories slowly invaded and began racing until it exploded with all the recollections of our time together."
"He wasn't going to argue. Trust. He had it for me as I did for him."
"I know you're the one for me. My partner. The other half of my soul."
This was so great! The story starts off with some awesome action, and it just continues to surprise and excite me till the very end! I mean I was on board from the first sentence, but when you add in a talking frog in moss pants! I'm all the way there! Arizona's assassin father has recently been killed, and now her father's enemies are after her, and while she is trying to escape, she comes upon a skeleton key that transports her to another realm. Arizona is all alone in a new world, but luckily Arizona finds a few friends, who become her new family, but Arizona still has a tough time coming to terms with her new situation. The whole story was fast paced, and I loved the bits of humor throughout the story. I also loved how much Arizona and Lucifer get each other; they have a deep bond, and I enjoyed their banter, and how they play off each other. Their connection was really wonderful! The story did turn more intense then I was thinking it would because the whole beginning was quite light hearted despite a few deaths, but even so, I was still surprised with some of the scenes; they definitely went a little more spicy then I was thinking they would! But, I thoroughly enjoyed them! This is a short read, but it didn't feel lacking to me, I felt like the story was well fleshed out, and I enjoyed the whole thing! Loved it!

What can I say other than I really like this book... I mean come on, its a Scarlett Dawn book, of course its going to be good. My one major complaint is that it was not long enough (but then is it ever long enough?) and I would have loved to follow the characters some more and see them develop, both as individuals and as a couple. There is always a worry when an author develops such a kick-ass heroine that they won't allow the heroine to shine on their own, and instead will have the hero come along and save the day. Not so with this book, instead we get not one but two kick-ass characters who work together seamlessly and support each other without one of them dominating the other.
I also wish that there was more to the story, more about the game, just more... everything. Again this comes down to length, if this was novel length and not novella length, then Scarlett would have more time to develop the story more and cover more detail. Considering that I am aware that the other books in the Skeleton Key collection(?) are all novella length, I will forgive this but I do wish that these books weren't limited to a word count and were instead allowed to be the novels they really should be.
*** Gifted in exchange for an honest review*** Can this be read as a standalone - YES. Characters: Arizona Creed - 18 and grieving for her dead father, and at the same time running for her life, when she thinks its all over, she suddenly finds a key to a door and then... her whole world changed. - as the Blurb said: Literally. With one magical skeleton key, Arizona lands in another realm.
On Terlant ( the other realm) Arizona meets Lucifer but she is not in any fit state for romance, and Lucifer is not a devil, no hes more her angel and he looks after her they become the best of friends, even tho he wants more. I loved how Ms Dawn has incorporated that they had their adopted daughters to think about in this story. - the story jumps forward to 3 years later when the pair are requested to enter THE GAME - Will they win?
Well read on and see.
The writing flows well, I was lost in the story, the action and the humour too, but you could also feel the loss Arizona felt when she allowed herself to think of her slain father...
That's all I will say, its a quick read, but an enjoyable one.
Favourite character - Kingsley! the bath scene!!!! PMSL
5 stars for Game Master by Scarlett Dawn Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance, NA Series: The Skeleton Key Audience: NA, Adults
Synopsis: Arizona are in big trouble. Her father, a hitman, is killed by assassins and now they are after her. While running from trouble she picks up a key and ends up in a different realm, in the country of Terlant. Here her guide turns out to be a toad named Kingsley, who leads her in a direction where she meets a young man named Lucifer. The two young people come together in their love for fighting and the twins girls Lucifer has adopted. Together they tackle tasks to make their way in the realm.
Conclusion: This book was so funny I LMAO. If a review could be made in emojis it would be with action and laughter. It has so many funny episodes, that I wished the book had been longer. I truly hope the author writes more stories about Arizona and Lucifer. I just loved their personalities and it didn't hurt, that they both know how to kick ass. The author perfectly portrayed the reactions of to people just past their teens finding their way in a new world, and finding out what they want with their life. I would warmly recommend it to any friend.
Arizona just lost her father, who is an assassin, and now the men who killed him are after her. While running away, she finds a strange key to a door, and thinking it will grant some measure of safety she uses it. She never expected to be taken to another place, something so strange, and different from her normal world. But, that's what happened.
And in this place she meets Lucifer, and while these two start off as friends things especially towards more feelings in the long run.
This was a short, fast paced book that was really really good! I thoroughly enjoyed Lucifer and Arizona's relationship. It was awesome! I also thought the plot line was really interesting as well.
The only downsides to the story were it wasn't long enough, and there wasn't enough detail about the new world Arizona jumped into.
But, other than that I thought this book was really good.
I really, really enjoyed this book. Arizona has the skills and the background to be able to back those skills up (what I mean by that is she didn't inexplicably gain her skills overnight; she had a lifetime of training).
The world she walks into is fun with interesting and unique characters. Kinglsey had me laughing out loud with his frequent protestations and meddling and the General's wry humour was enjoyable too.
Nooo why is this a novella?! There could've been so much more character & plot development, as well as more details into just about everything. It was over so fast :(
What a farce. A lark. A quirky romantic action fairytale romp.
The story opens with Arizona on the run, her father assassinated. Just at the last minute, she finds a skeleton key to unlock her trip to a new dimension. Once you get over that plot twist, you pretty much find everything else tongue-in-cheek believable. She meets up with a talking frog and a banished prince, which sounds like something I would like to see. But then things go downhill from there.
As an introduction to a series, the story works well. Arizona and her partner in this new world, Lucifer, act like twins who have found each other after being separated at birth. They are so kick-ass no one can stand against them, and they practically complete each other’s thoughts.
I did not care for that. There was a long sex scene near the end that I skipped over, not because I am embarrassed, but because it did not really help the plot, and I got the impression it was like having sex with yourself. See?
There were no surprises, and several unanswered questions, and the novella was written well. I won’t continue the series, since I prefer more mystery in the romance. Also, this more of a quick summer snack than a deep exploration of a concept. I guess with fall arriving, I want more than cotton candy.
You will like this if you want an easy, light-hearted, quick summer read.
This is a young adult romance novella. Out has the HEA ending, but it does have an open ending much like a movie that wishes to introduce a series. I thought it was well written and couldn't put it down. There is a s** scene in this book It seems to used to finish off the book.
I quite enjoyed this one.. I know it was the start of a series but i found it lacked something for me... I would have liked to have seen Arizona settling into the new world...
It was quite fun, and i loved the smexy scene near the end, it does seem like the following books wpuld be fun and I will eventually pick them up... Probably
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I am also never let down! Even if for some random reason I may think nah, MAYBE this book isn’t going to catch me then BAM! I’m hooked, as always, and can’t put it down. This started that way for me then went into hyperdrive can’t get enough fast enough mode. Great fun read!
I actually liked the fast paced environment of this book. It kept me interested and I enjoyed the idea of the storyline, I know it was a novella, but it would be nice have had a little more to read.
Ok, this story was not what I expected, also I found it very hard to explain what it was about. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were perfect for each other.
Oh wow! What to say?? First ... My reaction when i saw how short it was?
So far i only need future releases and two or three of Scarlett's books, and i've read every one of her books. I absolutely adore her books, i think they're brilliant, and i was sad to see how short this one was, though... it was still good!
I love how much personality her characters have, not just Arizona and Lucifer, but overall her way of making characters in general, i love their "sassy'ness", i love their attitudes towards the unknown and their reactions to when shit gets too much.
I love me a heroine who knows how to take care of herself, who knows when shit hits the fan, what to do and how to do, and if all else fail? kick some more ass. I think Arizona is that kind of girl. After her father dies, she knows shit is about to go down and she has a semi plan for it, when she's landed in an unknown dimension, she starts planning and figuring out what to do. And it obviously worked out.
The dynamics between Arizona and Lucifer, i was a bit worried in the beginning, would this be a love connection, a best friend no lovers connection, how would this turn out? It turned out great. Just fucking brilliant. They have this..... Connection? They just click, they know each other, whats required of each other. It's amazing. To be honest i was pretty far in the book, close to the end or so, and i wasn't seeing any romance between the two... And i wanted that! I wanted there to be a romantic connection, because they were so goddamn good together! Fuck yeah there needed to be a connection! And Scarlett did not disappoint, the romantic connection was there, and it was just perfect! I am in no way disappointed with this book, it had what i love about her writing style! In-depth characters, they're not monotone, they're funny, they're strong, in more than one way and they usually compliment each other in various ways! I think the story, although short ( Sad sad sad Chris :( ) is good, because eventhough it was good, it wasn't bombarded with information that we had no answers for when the book ended, it wasn't short on the required information for the story to function either.
I can't express how much i liked this story, and i might reread it a few more times.. It's that good.
Isn't the cover pretty. Reading the book, the cover made perfect sense.
Arizona's story past was sad. She just lost her father and she was running from his killers. In which led her to finding a key which opened the door that led her to Terlant.
Her first acquaintance when she arrived at Terlant was Kingsley. I liked how she was calm when learned that she wasn't on Earth. It also led her meeting to Lucifer (who's super hot, just fangirling over here), who was a spare to a kingdom but due to some circumstances he doesn't want to be found by his family.
Arizona and Lucifer both live together for years and helped one another. What led them to the game master was because of a certain talking frog who thought they need a bit of spice in their life. At first I really thought he betrayed them but did more of a favor.
Arizona and Lucifer accepted the challenge to become part of the Guard. Along the challenges that they have undergone, it also made Arizona realized something about herself. Her true feelings.
This was just too sweet and how they finally got together.
It may be short but I loved rereading it.
I wish there was more.
I received an arc from the author in exchange for an honest review.
