Breaking the Rules: 7 Controversial Parenting “Rules” and Why Parents Should Be Breaking Them

Rate this book
“I break most of the controversial parenting rules. Not because I am a rebel mom, but because I love my kids.” – Bethany Cousins, journalist, blogger, mom of nine, and author of Breaking the Rules . Breaking the Rules will take you on a journey through a jungle of jaw-dropping statistics, stunning case studies, and eye-opening information every parent should hear. Mom of nine tells parents why she dissents the “majority rule” on seven of the most highly controversial parenting subjects - and why you should, too! Cousins contends, “We are being misinformed, and, if we are not careful, we will also be misled. Our children’s best interests are not always on these ‘experts’ minds” and proceeds to reveal how trusted organizations, including our government, have created parenting “rules” and "guidelines" to enrich their financial and political stances, which are not always in the best interest of your children. Her mind-provoking and factious viewpoints are shockingly blunt as she attacks expert opinion and majority rule Screen timeGender orthodoxyvaccinating children medicating childrenchildhood obesity spanking co-sleeping Breaking the Rules challenges the “popular opinion” and the “experts” and takes a trip “behind the scenes” of these seven controversial parenting issues! It is a must-read book for parents who are on the fence about any of these highly debated subjects. Keep up the good work Mrs. Cousins.” - Mark Kasniac, Amazon Reviewer

Breaking the Rules is an absolutely fantastic parenting advice book brought to you by a woman who definitely knows a thing or two about the subject. Bethany Cousins straight-forward, no nonsense approach to what she has deemed the 7 controversial parenting rules is explained concisely and debated from both sides of the aisle in a way that steadily moves the book forward and is kept enjoyable for the reader. Cousins backs her research and opinions with copious amounts of data she’s gathered from the world’s leading credited resources, and at times, she’s not afraid to go against these so called “Experts” opinions either. Two personal sections of the book that I enjoyed was when Bethany took on the issues of Screen time (video games, tablets, etc.) and the medicating of children deemed to have behavior issues. I also love the way Bethany managed to keep the mood of the book light; using anecdotes from her personal life and family which were both humorous and work-well to convey her point of view to the reader. Highly recommend “Breaking the Rules” for parents who are at any point of their child rearing, you will definitely learn something new, or a dozen or so something’s new. Keep up the good work Mrs. Cousins.

Having reared one child and been a grandparent to two more, I know only too well how difficult it can be to bring children up the right way. Mostly you and your partner are on your own apart from grandparents, and it very much a trial and error procedure, and learning as you go along. Breaking the Rules is a concise book, that breaks down the barriers in a light-hearted way, about how you shouldn’t tackle parenting. Of course every child is different, but Bethany with a wealth of experience gives her definitive guide on how this should be done. She obviously has a great love of children, as do I, and it will do no harm to follow this fantastic guide.
