Life was an American magazine published weekly from 1883 to 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 until 2000. During its golden age from 1936 to 1972, Life was a wide-ranging weekly general interest magazine known for the quality of its photography.
Now that the weather is nice and spring like, I've been taking the time to dust off some old magazines that have been languishing on my shelf and decided to do more than a casual dip and flip. I read this cover to cover, didn't take too long though I did put it down to draw it out a bit. (Plus my cat doesn't like the sound of me turning the pages when I dare to read in his presence. Oh, the audacity of me!)
What I liked: - Beautiful presentation. Nice glossy pictures, great shots, moody presentation. Just what's needed for a magazine about haunted places. - The around the world aspect helped draw my attention to places I've not heard of, or have heard of but forgot to look into.
What I disliked: - The errors? I mean, maybe some were for a dramatic twist but... Really? - Sometimes the articles were a little too short for my liking. I wanted more information! - Sometimes the desire to be a travelouge was too great! Some weren't necessarily about haunted places at all.
Anyway, this is great for anyone who wants to dip their toes into the wonderful world of ghosts.
As always the photography is impeccable, and the locations truly global. The text is very brief; many of these sites would require many more pages to properly explain the haunting, but it definitely makes you want to find out more. One such enticing blurb: "[a painting] showed a house in which patients saw a sinister old woman staring from the window. A few times, she even left the house and looked around before going back inside." And you thought Harry Potter paintings were an original idea... The editors went for mostly famous places over perhaps some of the truly most haunted places in the world; but this is Life magazine and photogenic is of course the priority.
I was first drawn to this magazine by its cover. The photo was eerie and haunting, just what you would expect during the autumn season. Turning the pages, you meet the most striking images you will find anywhere. Each story is well written, but short enough to keep your attention focused on the haunting images. The Capuchin Crypt and the Island of the Dolls were especially captivating to me. Whether you want a quick education of a collection of the world's most eerie places, or you just want to have a collection of the most haunting images you will ever see anywhere, this magazine is must read and worth every penny.
Nice for a quick little tour of generally spooky places, even if they aren't necessarily haunted. Only problem with it really came from the parroting of incorrect or misleading information because it's "spookier" than the truth. Could just be because it's not all common knowledge due to things getting buried in myth, but seeing as how this is a major publication, don't see why they can't do the leg work to be accurate.
I was delighted to find several of these LIFE magazines available to borrow electronically through my library's Libby database. This made for a quick lunchtime read, but I wish this particular issue had more substance. I would have appreciated greater detail and a more limited scope than trying to cram so much in. I didn't feel I learned much about each location and the writing tried too hard to be quippy.
I do love these kinds of books. I couldn’t sleep one night and I devoured most of it then. Some I had heard of before, some not. But they are for the most part, very interesting.
This was a fun magazine. A lot of places are very well-known, but I discovered a few that I didn't know about. Most of the descriptions were a bit too short, but the pictures were beautiful!
Didn't spook my thick skin, but definitely excellent horror writing fodder! Looking forward to the next inspired writing session with this by my side. :)
