Jos Vandeloo is a Belgian writer and poet. He grew up in a miner family and graduated as a chemist for the mining industry.
After the war he started working in the mine as a coal specialist and for this he traveled throughout Europe (up to 1953). In the meantime he also studied also Dutch and French literature at the Royal Academy and the Higher Institute for Arts in Antwerp.
After his career in the mine, he (first deputy director and afterwards) became director of the Belgian division of the publisher Manteau. In the sixties he was for a while sports commentator for the Belgian Radio and Television (BRT). Since 1963 he lives in Mortsel near Antwerp.
He made his debut in 1955, with the collection of poems Speelse parade (E: Playful parade) became well known with the stories De muur (E: The Wall) en Het gevaar (E: The Danger). In 1982, he became full-time writer.
In his work he generally describes the negative impact of modern society, such as loneliness and alienation and he tries to strive for an idealistic, paradisaical environment. He not only wrote novels, tales and poetry but also wrote several screenplays for television and theatre plays. His work has been translated into several European languages (such as Russian) and he has won several awards.

De verteller ziet op vakantie in een niet-toeristisch dorpje een jonge vrouw die hem intrigeert. Hij ziet ze elke dag over straat wandelen, maar zij lijkt hem niet op te merken. Na een paar maanden thuis te zijn, besluit hij terug te keren naar dit dorpje. Ditmaal slaagt hij er wel in contact te maken met het meisje. Ze beleven een leuke tijd, maar ze vertelt niet veel over zichzelf. Stukje bij beetje komt hij wat meer over haar te weten, al is het niet veel. Hij heeft vrienden in het dorp, een winkelierskoppel, en op een dag vraagt de vrouw hem of hij mee wil gaan om een ziek familielid te gaan bezoeken. Hij stemt hiermee in, en als hij bij deze familie is, komt Sarah ineens binnen. Zij blijkt dus een dochter te zijn van het zieke familielid.
Sarah is redelijk over haar toeren dat de verteller, haar vriend, nu weet dat zij uit een arm gezin komt. Sindsdien is er iets subtiels veranderd in hun relatie. Toch beminnen ze elkaar nog hartstochtelijk.
Dn breekt de winter aan en de verteller gaat terug naar huis, met de belofte om met Pasen terug te komen. Als hij dat doet, is er echter iets verschrikkelijks gebeurd.
Het is eigenlijk maar een dun boekje, en het gaat ook maar over enkele korte episodes in het leven van de twee hoofdpersonen. Vooral de gevoelens en gedachten van de verteller, een al wat oudere man, worden beschreven.
Niet echt denderend, maar een matig tussendoortje.
