Piece Keeper by Antwan Floyd Sr. is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel with brilliantly drawn characters. The author weaves a well-crafted private investigator mystery with intriguing twists and turns that will captivate the reader from the first page to the last. Skillfully constructed and set against the backdrop of police corruption and sexual abuse, this book will have you on the edge of your seat!
The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘…Teresa Prince, a small town girl with a big heart, had dreams of working in law enforcement her goals put on pause in the worse way possible. Black Love was always a white collar kind of guy more so than a gangster when an unfortunate incident occurs in a small town in Illinois he rushes to the side of his ex-fiancé to attempt to save the day. It does not take long to figure out that not everyone wants to see justice served. On top of that, his feelings for his past love may not only cause conflicts in the case but also add a rift to his new relationship. Well, if you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was a fantastic read. This is the first book in the Black Love Detective Stories and I must say I was very impressed.
I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a well-written mystery thriller with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of the Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense will want it.
This was a fascinating and captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page-turner that will take the reader on a gripping journey.
Piece Keeper had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book. It’s one of those stories that come along once in a while that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!
There’s no doubt that Piece Keeper is an exceptionally well-written book. However, it must be said that this story is not for the faint-hearted or easily offended. The author’s script at times is razor-sharp and will cut deep into the emotions of its reader. There are scenes of a sexual nature with extreme violence. Nevertheless, the themes and outcome are just as affecting in the arresting contemporary landscape.
I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Antwan Floyd Sr. in the future. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.
First and foremost I would like to post a disclaimer. A rating of two stars from me doesnt mean the book is bad. In fact I would settle with a 2.5 because it is the kind that made me ponder what was the key takeaway from the story and I found myself left wanting. Also, it is a bit more readably readable unlike the description for my two star rating. So I will do the review by stating a positive and then what went wrong for me.
The plot started with a bang. A young intern is gangraped and the search is on to nail the culprits. It was a really powerful theme and would have worked wonders but for the glitches. I got lost in the intermittent twists and turns in the storyline. Yes, there were a few scenes which could have been rewritten or re-worded.
The narration on the whole gives the feel of a motion picture. It could be filmed into something akin to the action movies with a gothic theme. But when it came to reading per se the language, I felt at times, was way too graphic and violent. Again its my personal opition. There were a few jerks in between narrations, maybe because of it I could have lost out on the comprehension part. The story did evoke imageries but after sometime they became too much overwhelming for my comfort and I had to stop my mind from thinking.
There were few characters who were the highlights of the story, as in the story brought out that everybody has shades of grey.
To sum up, the story is readable once because of the plot that it revolves around. Yes, there is a big difference in the treatment: It may appeal to some, it may not to others like me. Read it if you can handle graphic details and severe violence. The Piece Keeper for me is the story that probably has finesse in pieces for its readers.
P.S - This review is my honest opinion after reading the story. Thank you Bookr3vi3w Tours for this.
Plot: I was not sure about what to expect from the book, to be frank. From the blurb, I expected it to be part thriller, part romance and very much character oriented. But the book turned out to be quite different from the image that I got from the blurb. There's the central plot where Teresa gets raped and has her ex step into her life looking for revenge on behalf of her. Though the focus is on this central storyline, I liked the way the book covers the many shades of humanity. From violence to corruption, the book touches many evils of modern society.
Characters: It was perhaps what holds the book together. There are four-five main characters in the book and they are all shades of grey. None of them is all black or all white and it is interesting to see how sometime the supposedly 'good' guys can walk on the other side of the line. I liked the way the characters are developed.
Language & Narrative: There were a few parts where I had trouble understanding the dialogues. I suppose they were written in some localized slang which I am not aware of. But that was a very small part. Overall the author has done a good job with his narrative, making the plot more dramatized.
Note: I had trouble with certain scene which was well written but could be a trigger for some people due to its violent nature.
I think this was a very good book and a page turner for sure. I major issue that through me was, I think, an editing issue. Early on in the book I read a few paragraphs that were repeated verbatim a couple of pages later.
This caused an issue for me as I began expecting this and looking for it throughout. If that was not present, this would be highly recommended as it has a good story with a twist.
