I would like to be famous and unknown said Edgar Degas. His sublime paintings of ballet dancers, striking views of horseraces and intimate scenes of women bathing made him famous. Yet he remains unknown, for the fame of these pictures has obscured both the rest of his work - historical subjects, portraits, landscapes - and his private life. Here is Degas' sixty-year career - as a passionate supporter of the avant-garde, a champion of Impressionism, an insatiable experimenter.
It was definitely worth reading, I found out a few things. Degas was a bit of a misanthrope, if you hadn't heard....
There are negatives that I need to warn about. This is a small book and many of the reproductions, although they have good color, are minuscule. This did give them the option to include a very large number of color reproductions, by making some less than an inch square. The writing is not very organized, I get the feeling the author dumped a bunch of information into the book and left the hapless reader to fend for themselves.
This was OK, since I checked it out of the library, and did not purchase it.
Longer than a Wikipedia article, much shorter than a real biography, plus lots of images and some primary source documents. The first section was poorly written. The documents, mostly testimonies and letters, were more interesting.
