Rate this book
Daniel has lived his entire life peacefully on his mountain home with his grandfather. Then one day that all ends and this twenty-five-year-old young man is forced to deal with the loss of his grandfather and the knowledge that he may be the only hope for saving his country. The country of Now is in devastation. For years after the wizards and sorcerer war, Now experienced unprecedented peace. It flourished in advancements; socially, economically and technologically. Then the three-headed dragon, politics, greed and power reared their ugly head. Unwilling to deal with the harsh laws and restriction placed upon them by the government the citizens rose up and rebelled. The Great War that was fought between the citizen rebels and the government utilized all of the new devastating technology that the country of Now had developed and the outcome was disastrous. Their country lay in ruins. The earth and the people were dying as there were no longer any resources left to sustain them. Daniel is forced to come down off his mountain to find answers about his missing grandfather. He meets his grandfather’s old friend Gavin and his niece and nephew Marcus and Anna; wizards. They tell him an unbelievable prophecy that he has to play the starring role in but…to succeed he has to get through Peter—an insane, power hungry descendent of wizards—and the whole militia he controls. Gavin’s prophecy and the part that he feels Daniel will play in it is unbelievable. Will Gavin help him find his grandfather if he doesn’t help them fulfill the prophecy? Why didn’t his grandfather ever tell him about this prophecy and his part in it? What are these confusing feelings Daniel is experiencing for Gavin’s niece Anna? But does any of that matter if the end of their world is set to come?

This story resonates on several levels, first as a tale of a young man raised on a glacier who has no idea that he is a powerful wizard chosen by the staff introduced in the first of these Wizard of Now novels, and second as a cautionary tale to today's youth to take care of our planet and our natural resources so they will continue to provide for us in the future. Daniel leads a group of young wizards through an apocalyptic landscape to save the planet and its remaining inhabitants, human and wildlife, from certain starvation and thirst. Without using spoilers, Daniel and these young wizards must face militia leaders who have been corrupted by power and greed. They will need the help of friends they encounter along their arduous journey, and Daniel must fight an epic battle with dark forces before they can complete their dangerous but vital mission. Delivers a good message about the consequences of ones actions to today's youth who have been raised in a throw-away society that is damaging our planet.

Michael Walsh has created a wonderful hero for young adult readers to look up to in this book. Daniel, looses the most important person in his life at the same time he finds out that he has the starring role in full-filling a prophecy that will give hope for a future to a world that a greedy government has destroyed. No pressure right?

This book takes YA readers on an adventure filled with emotion, self-discovery, action, adventure, fantastic battle scenes and...magic. He tantalizes young reader's minds once again as he at the same time teaches them a lesson about how important taking care of the world you live in is to all. Being the parent of a pre-teen, sometimes the most easily absorbed lessons are the ones that are subtly slipped into the types of scenes that they love. He definitely does that in this story. A fantastic read!
