Een coming-of-age boek uit een reeks waarin de auteur het hoofdpersonage tijdens de pubertijd de (lichamelijke) liefde laat ontdekken, steeds een stapje verder gaand. In dit deel gebeurt HET dus echt. Als er niet onverwachts gebeurt. En met wie?
Een "begrijpend" gezin en schoolse omgeving klinkt normaal maar de personages worden niet al te realistisch weergegeven, de harde kantjes worden er afgevlakt. Dat bevordert wel de leeswaardigheid doordat er geen overbodige afleidingen ingebouwd worden.
De vader is nog de meest normale in het gezin, de oudere zus handelt wel erg progressief. Maar de moeder schiet de hoofdvogel af. Om maar begrijpend en modern over te komen, balanceert ze (vooral in woorden) op de rand van pedofilie en incest. De scène over het gebruik van condooms spreekt boekdelen.
Als voorlichtingsboek is dit verhaal zeker beter dan vele andere, gewoon doordat het verteld wordt vanuit het standpunt van een onzekere puber voor wie het de eerste keer is. Toch komen heel wat scènes onrealistisch en watterig over. Verder ontbreken bijvoorbeeld verwijzingen naar de pil bijvoorbeeld, met als argument natuurlijk SOA's.

March 16, 2023A question on Reddit made me think about the first romance books I read. I can't remember the first one but these did stuck with me. I got them from the library and they were educational?
But also hot.
I know that there some people out there who don't want to acknowledge that with puberty also comes the interest in sex and having it (or discovering you don't want to) with another person.
But with those wants also comes the quest to what intimacy means. These books were very validating in discovering that process.
They were about love and how you can show that with your body. How awkward that may be.
At least that's what I can remember. I could have my nostalgia glasses on. I will try to find them again second hand and reread them to see how they hold up.
Sidenote: I'm really glad I grew up in a country where I even had access to these kinds of books. I never had the sex talk with my parents but I did get a book 🤣.
