So far, the recipes we've made from the book have been keepers, though some of them definitely give me pause ("American Chop Suey" or anything that involves putting fish in a slowcooker :-o) Quite a few call for ingredients like condensed cheddar soup, which I'd rather stay away from if the whole point is eating healthily...I also ignored the frequent instructions to add a couple teaspoons of Splenda to the recipes. All in all, though, there are some winners in this cookbook.
I got several cookbooks 2nd-hand at a library sale, and this one did include some new-to-me recipes I'd try: teriyaki chicken, lentil and spinach stew, and several variations on crustless quiche. My husband wants me to add Teriyaki Steak with Peppers and Onions.
However, these recipes don't limit fat and cholesterol, so I might alter some of them further in their dairy and cream based ingredients.
I found a different Crustless Vegetable Quiche recipe that I'd use over the ones in this book for less WW points. It has 1/2 c part-skim ricotta and 1 1/2 c nonfat cottage cheese rather than the 1 c cream in these recipes.
There were no tempting pictures.
I did not like that all the dessert recipes involved using artificial sweeteners.
Several other reviewers pointed out that many of the recipes involved prepackaged ingredients and canned soups, so take that into your health considerations.
I bought myself a second slow cooker and decided to branch out in my cooking so I spent the day skimming my way through this book and loved it. I am NOT a cook so reading these really easy recipes that suit my diet was marvelous, I had to take a lot of notes for ingredients to shop for before I can actually put any of the recipes to the test but I learned a lot. I bought this one as an ebook and I really should look for a paper copy. I read it once before when I bought my first huge crockpot and found a couple of recipes that I committed to memory and recycled all this time.
I haven’t actually made anything from here yet but there are several recipes I’ve flagged. They seem easy and I like the way the authors explain everything in the intro.
If you're trying to cut back on sugar and white flour, and don't mind using artificial sweeteners this is an excellent book. The desserts taste positively decadent. I highly recommend the boston cream pie and the flourless chocolate cake.
I have scads of low carb cookbooks and slow cooker cookbooks--but I reach for this one more often than any of the others combined. The "Greek Meatloaf," "Chicken Piccata" and "Good ol' Chili" are go-to recipes and always come out great. Really good stuff!
I was able to pull out a few recipes but most of them require specific mixes, like Sweet 'n Low cake mixes, Atkins bake mixes, etc. without access to these things, most of the desserts in here are options
Pretty good recipes, I made a couple. I now have more time to cook, but this is good for making large batches of say, pulled pork or soups for freezing.
No pictures make for a very dull cookbook, in my opinion. The need for many odd ingredients makes the recipes less than accessible for all but the most determined eater.
