The Breaking in Waves Series: The Complete Trilogy Collection

Rate this book
Breaking in Waves is an erotic trilogy comprising ++ Driftwood Deeds, ++ Trading Tides and ++ Saltwater Skin. It follows the relationship of hermit screenwriter Paul Archer and young media journalist Iris, who comes to interview him in his seaside home. While Iris has long been curious about Dominance and submission, she has never had a taste. So when Paul offers to give her one, she jumps at the chance for an adventure. Of course nothing is ever that easy and when feelings start to develop between them, they have try and make to work across the distance and an age gap, try to fit their disparate puzzle pieces together somehow. Breaking in Waves is erotic fiction with a literary bent, with a whiff of rebellion that seeks the truth of love, kindness and consent in kinky, loving bdsm relationships. +++++ Praise for Breaking in Waves "This novella is a gem for fans of BDSM romance and is the perfect starting point for readers new to the genre. Iris' curiosity blossoms into a beautiful, wicked eagerness to submit with the help of Paul's patient guidance. Paul's penchant for humiliation play is a kink made even hotter by Iris' positive emotional and physical response." RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars, Top Pick

This is a collection of three books. I read the first book, the first time it was published and have re read it here to get a full idea of the three books in sequence. I still loved the first book, which introduces us to reclusive Paul, who turns out to be a Dom, and Iris a journalist, who's gone to Paul's home to write a piece on Paul. It transpires Iris is a natural submissive, and Paul introduces her to bits of the life style.this book concludes with Iris about to return to her home town, but Paul going to her.
The second book is a continuation of their developing relationship, but Iris returns to her work, takes promotion, which means they spend more time apart and develop a distant relationship. The Dom/ Sub relationship also develops along the same lines with Paul sending instructions via mail, Internet or phone, until one day sees Paul going to see Iris at her home. Things develop, and Iris accidently says something to upset Paul, and things come to a head.
The third book is mainly a book taken from Paul's POV. All the previous books have been Iris's POV, which through me. It was nice to have an insight into Paul for a change, but to be honest, out of all three books I didn't really enjoy this book. I felt it didn't really take me anywhere. The sex and BDSM action was very hot and disturbing at times, there appears to be no safeword, just lots of love and trust. But this book develops the relationship further, but I didn't feel anything. I just felt lost and rushed in this book, as though it needed an ending, but how best to complete it.

It's a lovely, nice read and I will certainly read them again. I just wanted more from the third book. I liked it, but Paul's POV through me for a bit, when we'd only seen Iris's perspective till this point. I had Paul tagged as a confident, self assued Dom, until this insight. He's still lovely and deeply in love, but he's not all powerful anymore.

Beautiful series portraying the journey for a Dominant and the submissive he meets as they build toward a relationship.

Driftwood Deeds: What a wonderful beginning to a beautiful Dominant/submissive romance. Iris is visiting Paul to interview him for the magazine she works for but she got a whole lot more than an interview. Paul lives a solitary life but he has done his homework on Iris so when she arrives he leads her into a sultry and sexy submissive experience, something Iris never knew she needed or wanted. A connection is born that neither wants to break when she has to return to the city. Will Paul be able to "date" Iris? Can they make a long distance Dom/sub relationship work?

Trading Tides: We continue Iris and Paul's relationship with Iris telling us the story. We get to experience their relationship from the submissive viewpoint, helping us understand what Iris craves and desires from her interactions with Paul. She truly loves to submit and please him which you get to experience first-hand as she takes us into this new world with her. Distance is a challenge for them, it leaves Iris feeling lost at times but Paul steps up with a fabulous surprise. I love how this romance unfolded and the connection we build with Iris and Paul as they work on their relationship.

Saltwater Skin: In this final installment we experience Paul and Iris's journey from Paul's viewpoint. He expresses his doubts and concerns as a Dominant always trying to be true to what he and Iris have built and never pushing her too far when she won't acknowledge her own limits. They are living together now and Iris is working on finding her new career. Paul has to adapt to a new world after living alone for so long as he makes room for Iris while also embracing a new future that he never expected to happen for him. Once again beautifully told allowing you to truly experience this very personal and intimate relationship fully from start to finish. I enjoyed just being a part of Iris and Paul's world for this short time and feeling like I would know them if I met them on the street.

Oh, I love, love, loved this. I wish I could write better reviews because this book [or, these novellas, I suppose] deserves a better review than what I can provide. This was beautifully written. The characterisation was there even after the first of the three books. Talking of: loved the h/h. Loved Iris. Loved Paul. Loved them even more together. The setting was wonderfully drawn and the themes - nature, raw, unspoiled beauty, the creation of new things out of broken ones (there are more, but it's midnight and my brain is broken) - all fed from the setting into the characters and then into the sex. It takes a special kind of writer to do all of that with so few words. It all intensifies across the three novellas. The telling of the third novella from the perspective of Paul took this to a particularly great place for me. It's rare in BDSM erotica (in my, admittedly limited, experience) to hear from the dominant in the situation and to gain an understanding of why being a dominant is their particular kink. It also ensured the books status as romantic erotica. It was incredibly romantic by the end and I had all the feels. I believed it, I bought it. I ate it up. The sex is incredibly well done and, in addition to being hot, is completely non-judgmental. It adds to the characters, it's not some superfluous add on, as a consequence of which, even though this is erotica, it doesn't feel like erotica. Or rather, it feels like erotica done right and I wish all erotica was like this. Go, go read. Go read now.

The Breaking in Waves Series: The Complete Trilogy Collection

The Breaking in Waves Series, by Laila Blake, was sent to me for an honest review. I thank the author for gifting me with her written treasure. It was a most memorable and gratifying task to read and review this series.

The Breaking in Waves trilogy showcases a dominant/submissive relationship. In Driftwood Deeds, a reporter (Iris) arrives for an interview with a reclusive writer (Paul) at his home in a quaint seaside town. Upon meeting, the protagonists are drawn to one another and the story depicts the blossoming of their relationship. In Trading Tides, Iris and Paul experience the challenges of a long-distance romance. In Saltwater Skin, the obstacle of long distance ends–Iris leaves her job in the city and moves to Paul’s home in the seaside village–and assimilation of their separate lives unfolds.

This beautifully written series is an intense, poignant, and compelling read. All three novellas were mesmerizing, sensual and enchanting from cover to cover. Ms. Blake’s writing style is beyond compare; she has great talent in creating rich, complex characters. It was a pleasure to be immersed into this couple’s story.

Lovely love story

I found this series refreshing and beautifully written. Iris discovers submission at the hands of Paul. I love that Paul gently guides her through their journey as D/s. Iris responds beautifully to Paul's gentle way, relishing and thriving under his hands. I love this story, the characters, I love the way the author weaves her words together. Just beautiful.

These are the perfect books for someone who is unsure if they like BDSM because it is more about the touch, feel and emotion then the aggressive side of BDSM. The way Paul and Iris gradually build their relationship into this intense bond is really cool. I would recommend these books to newbies of the BDSM world for sure and also to anyone that likes the deep sweet passionate love side of BDSMl. Good job Laila!!!!!

I only read the first two books. technically the writing was sound but the story line and the characters were drab. after the first book I renamed this series 20 shades to nowhere because to me it was a watered down version of 50 shades of Grey that went no where. to me the author needs to work more on bringing the characters to life and draw readers in to the story.
