This is another book for this semester’s external reading books. I would say that I didn’t enjoy it at all. I like the other one more.

1. Does this story of its characters remind you of another story you have read? Does it remind you of a movie? How are they alike? And how are they different?

Last semester I had read “High Life Low Life” which was about exactly the same character of the book I read, “East 43rd Street.” Nat Marley tried to solve all problems he encountered in both adventures. But, in “East 43rd Street” he was in a bigger trouble than the other one. Actually, I don’t remember if his assistant was the same person or not. In both books, he was introduced as a former worker of New York Police Department. He used his job experience to deal with the problems he ran across by the aid of his assistant and his co-worker. I could say that I liked the story of this book, and it helped me to finish this book in a short time. “High Life Low Life” was escapist novel as well.

2. Sometimes we read, certain words or phrases or images stand out. Maybe they are words or phrases that make an impression because of their sound, or maybe the meaning or image they make strikes us? Sometimes we find words or expressions we just do not understand. Share those that you have come across and describe why you listed them.

I listed many phrases I liked in this book, and I believe that they are absolutely useful in everyday life while you are speaking. I think that learning this kind of phrases is more helpful for English learners to improve their speaking skills. Besides, I realized that some Turkish and English phrases are exactly the same in which I put asterisk.

One day night, it left several days before Christmas, Nat Marley, who is privative detective and retired NYPD, met a gorgeous and luxuriant woman, Angela Lake, in McFadden’s Bar, a bar he used to visit after work. He keeps a suspicious eye on her unusual behavior in the bar and follows her, but he lost her in crowd of Central Grand Terminal. Tomorrow morning, He is surprised by her unpredictable visiting in his office, and he agrees to care of her personal request. However, he is suspicious of her request, so he prepare to hidden dangerous work with his companion, Stella, ED and Joe. As his anticipation, he finally involved mysterious affair related with her request, and he had to go to jail due to her and her husband’s conspiracy. Nonetheless, he can’t fall into a trap because of his preparation for this mysterious work and this mysterious affair looked like almost solved. However, appearance of the other strange man, Tommy Lam, and NYPD involved this mystery, makes this affair bigger and more suspicious. Marley face many dangerous times because of the Lam’s threaten, but he evades from that with his bright idea, and finally he settles this mysterious affair with his best friends’ help.

This novel is thriller genre. As like another Cambridge book series, this book is easily written to read. This kind of story is very enjoyable to me because curiosity for next chapter can’t stop to read until you fininsh to read the whole story. I recommend this book if you interest to read detective novel or are who traveled New York city before or hope to travel.

1. In today's reading did the setting or any of the characters remind you of people or characters in your own personal life?

when I read the part about detective, his personaality is similiar with my father. He is hot tempered in the story, so he couldn't stop asking questions to main character. Thus, he is embarassed. As the detective, my father is usually talkactive and it is easy to be hot tempered. However, unlike detective, he is not cold blooded. he has warm heart.

11. When you wish to learn when you read again tomorrow; what do you hope will happen in the story or to the characters?

I hope that there is a happy ending in the next story. Because, in now situation, the main character went through hardship with customer and detective. Actually I am on his side, so I hope that he will get over the trouble with many people. also, he helped his assistant to overcome troubles. This situation makes me pity to him. Therefore, I expect that it will be getting better.

This book was fun by main character's wit in the fascinating stage of New York. However, I was a little disappointed because the enemy was too thoughtless, and I wonder why the NYPD didn't active very much. In addition, it was difficult for grasping the meaning of the all sentences in the conversation because the characters talked some slangs and idioms, but it wasn't difficult to grasp the whole story.

I enjoyed this action book very much. However, i wonder why Lakes could be so thoughless. Nat used to work at the Police Department. And he was investigator. So it was insensate situation to choose Nat.

Libro della Cambridge molto piacevole, una sorta di libro d'azione ambientato a NY nei giorni appena precedenti il Natale. Il protagonista è un detective privato che si troverà a dover risolvere una faccenda poco chiara che ha a che fare con due coniugi, una società di software e dei gioielli. Sto leggendo pian piano diversi libri di questa collana creati apposta per chi studia inglese (ecco perchè non mi metto a leggere Dickens in versione integrale o che so io).

I think this is the second time to read one of Marley's detective stories. I enjoyed it like I watched a TV two-hour detective drama, which I enjoyed it with my mom but I wouldn't mind even if I missed the ending.

I've read this to see if it's something for my current EFL course. Our current book is already a level six so it's a bit easier than that. The story reads well though, and I am impressed by how the author manages to evoke the rather classic detective voice - echoes of Marlow, here, I find. I do find it strange that while there is a moment of modern technology, with cell phones serving as a GPS, there's no thought of recording conversations or encounters with the bad guys. I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll use this or not though. The vocabulary feels a bit flat to me, although maybe the students will appreciate not having too many new words for the last book of the term.
