Although Alex Lewis is a successful business man, his greatest failure has been the dissolution of his marriage after being blindsided by his wife's betrayal seven years prior. A recent development brings her back into his life and when the opportunity for revenge presents itself, he grasps it with both hands.

 photo 0A1A8273-A4AF-4F58-BF2D-478E8314EAC6_zpskgtijzhd.gif

Quite early on it's fairly transparent that Alex's feeling of anger towards Libby in fact mask his pain. He lashes out constantly, indiscriminately; It's evident in his bitterness towards her and the fact that he's hell bent on destroying her regardless of how many times he protests he has moved on.

 photo 7F9E3C3E-622B-46B5-AB20-8796772CEED3_zpsyqc06nrr.jpg

Sometimes his bitterness borders on brattish and he really could have benefitted from a kick up the backside. Told exclusively from Alex's POV, I found it difficult to relate to Libby as she didn't really make much of an impact for me.

On a whole I expected it to be a darker read, for Alex to be a more callous and vengeful character which wasn't the case. I was genuinely interested in Libby's reasons for leaving and after going through the charade of plotting and scheming, when the truth is revealed its self I have to admit it was rather underwhelming. But alas, the path to true love never did run smooth. Just ask these two.

★★★ 3 Stars ★★★

Alex Lewis lives in Birmingham in the Midlands of England. He married early on in life and his biggest regret is the failure of his marriage to Libby. 7 years later he is a successful and ruthless business man.

When his lawyer and best friend come to him with a plan to exact revenge on his ex wife by taking over her lingerie business, he jumps at the chance to take her down and make her suffer for the way she treated him.

They end up working together from the same office and the love that they shared pops straight back up to the surface and they can't hold back on the attraction that they still have for each other. Alex is struggling with warring emotions, his need to get back at her and his absolute need for her, his one true love.

Whilst Alex and Libby are going back and forth, there is also a bit of corporate espionage going on which really I wasn't that focused on.
_ _ _ _

Although this was a fairly good read, I couldn't quite endear myself to Alex. He was cocky and arrogant, which normally I'm all over like a bitch on heat, but he was bordering on nasty and I just didn't feel a connection, he was quite a rude person to everyone except for his mum and sister. Also, the business talk was too much and I would have loved for this to have been cut down to make room for more Alex and Libby - I didn't feel there were enough scenes between the two of them which was a shame because together they pretty explosive. The steamy scenes were pretty hot.

A few flashbacks would have been good too, so that the reader could have learnt more about Libby as a person, I didn't really feel I got to know her character at all.

All in all, it was an OK read.

This is a standalone novel told purely from Alex's POV.

Not as good i hoped it would be! Sadly, although the idea behind it was very compelling, something didn't work quite right.

Told exclusively from the hero's POV, it tends to be a little too much at points. Alex is not the ideal character to have a good time inside his mind, mostly a cocky, obnoxious bastard with a too big idea for himself, he treats the people who love him badly and with no respect.

I usually am all for the bad boy, the one that you probably want to kill while he sleeps, but this time it didn't work for me at all. Also he didn't seem as bright or shrewd someone might expect form a big shot businessman with questionable morality.

As for the heroine, she was equally distant and cold, even though she had her reasons. We don't get to know her quite well. That's a shame, because in my opinion if the book was told by both main characters it might have earn some much needed perspective and depth.

In a good note, Alex had some very sweet moments, that were really lovely and i liked very much the way the author handled the second chance plot. It was very realistic, even if the rest of the book, had to many cliches, that worked.

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK

- The writing was mediocre and the dialogue stale.
- But it had something intersting..
- By the way, the cover is also extremely captivating!!
- The whole Holli situation, ugh!
- Male POV.
- I liked the ending!

"I'm the bastard ex-husband who wants to see her fail. It's brilliant."
With a cool title and a fabulous cover, "Mendacious" grabbed my attention immediately. I couldn't wait to read Beth's new novel. In this story I was introduced to Alex Lewis, a cocky, arrogant and ruthless man who was determined to dominate the world of investments. Alex wasn't always this way. During the prologue I discovered that Alex was left devastated and heart broken following the break up of his marriage to Libby. Seven years later and although he had worked his way to to top of his profession, he never recovered from the pain that Libby had caused him. When he found an opportunity to seek revenge on his ex -wife, he simply couldn't refuse.
Libby's going to regret the day she fucked me over. I'm going to break every little piece of her until there's nothing left but an empty shell.

Although I didn't fall head over heels in love with Alex, I did feel sorry for him. As the story progressed I realised how much he was still hurting from the break up of his marriage. Underneath his need for revenge, there was a side to him that still had feelings for Libby and was desperate to see her again.
Whether its her, or her company. I won't stop. Ever.

As Alex continued on with his plan, unsurprisingly things didn't go as well as he had envisioned. Secrets were exposed and feelings were rekindled. Revenge was no longer at the forefront of his mind. He had something else to fight for. Something far more important than any business deal. Alex wanted his ex-wife back.
Do I want to stay away from Libby? I already know the answer. No, I fucking don't.
Libby was a bit of a mystery to me. Because the story is told entirely from Alex's POV, it was hard for me to really get to know her. I was always wondering about her actions and It was impossible for me to completely trust her. I began to get extremely suspicious of Libby, thinking that she was hiding something. Would I have know what her true feelings for Alex were?

Alex and Libby's journey was a bit of a bumpy ride as it became apparent that the couple had a lot of problems to work through. Alex and Libby were both so damaged but now they were older and wiser maybe they stood a chance of repairing their broken hearts and getting a second chance of love.
"She's the girl I can't forget. The girl I can't and won't live without any longer."
I did enjoy reading this story. Beth did a great job at telling a story from a man's perspective. I found myself laughing out loud to the some of Alex's dialogue and I wanted to give him a hug when things got rough for him. He was a brilliant character.

If you love second chance romance, this is a one you should add to your TBR.

Never heard of this author before but I’ll be checking out her other works. Mendacious was highly entertaining. But I needed more.

For starters… this is entirely told from the hero’s POV but when it comes to a failed marriage, man, I need both sides of the story. Besides I wanted a little peek of how their marriage life was back then. The prologue wasn’t even close to enough.

I also found myself skimming the parts where Alex is obsessing over some random chick’s legs and some lame ass dialogues that I found it made the book a little bit longer than it should be.

Other than that, I really liked the story. And that epilogue was amazing.

***Received an ARC for an honest review by Bookalicious Babes Blog***

Mendacious, written from the man's point of view, is raw, funny, witty, entertaining, and steamy. It's a second-chance romance story with a few twists, turns, back-stabbing, and stalking along the way. Alex is a hot CEO who has women throwing themselves at his feet.

"I'm Alex Lewis after all. The multi-millionaire with a jackhammer-sized cock. There's not a woman alive that doesn't want a piece of this. And that's the [fricking] problem. I don't' want any of them."

A quick romp, if she is lucky, is all a woman will get with Alex because he's is like a closed book...emotionally that is. That's because he gave his heart to a beautiful girl named Libby, his ex-wife, who walked out on him seven years ago.

"I thought I'd found my soul-mate, but I guess she didn't feel the same. What a waste of three years."

Alex and Libby were married at a young age and their marriage ended because of a misunderstanding and blame on both sides.

"She ruined everything by burning her mark deep inside my chest. She was the girl I'd trusted with my life, and in return, royally [fricked] me over. I had decided there and then I'd never let it happen again."

Whether it's fate or a bad case of revenge...or a bit of both... this man and woman's lives reconnect. You never forget your first love. Sometimes you can never love again. And other times, you get that second chance. But the past has a way of crashing the happiness party and sometimes will not leave.

Good novel by Beth Ashworth! I only wish the book was written in alternate points of view so we could have jumped in Libby's sexy head a bit too.

I made the mistake of starting this book while eating breakfast. I thought I'd just read a few pages but oh no I ended up sitting and reading it all.

I totally love Alex. He's a hot sexy alpha male. When his wife divorced him he threw himself into work. He struggles to move on from her. Seven years later she's back in his life and he wants revenge. But is revenge covering his true feelings for Libby?

This book is told through Alex's point of view. Although I didn't relate to Libby as much as I'd have liked to I really enjoyed this book.

**JOSIE'S 4.5 STAR REVIEW**

Mendacious is a fast read that is filled with angst, revenger, betrayal, twists and turns, surprises and a really hot British guy. I am a sucker for British men. I think it is the words bullocks and knickers. This is my first time reading a novel by Beth Ashworth and it certainly won’t be the last. She does an amazing job with the plot, character development and flow. I could not put this one down.

After his wife Libby walked out on him Alex has become a bitter and cold man. He has never been able to get over his feelings of failure and the betrayal of his wife. Alex thought everything was fine in their relationship. Libby’s departure was unexpected and left him hurt, angry and with more questions than answers. He has never gotten the closure he needs. He has the opportunity to seek revenge on the very woman years later when her company needs financial backing. He and his partner’s devise a scheme to help him have Libby at his mercy. What he doesn’t expect is having feelings of possessiveness, need, want and love towards her.

“Believe what you want, but the deal is done. You need to get used to seeing me, because I don’t plan on going anywhere. You’d better be ready for this, Libby.”

I absolutely love the constant banter between Alex and Libby. It is evident there are deep unresolved feelings between them. Alex’ character is fierce and strong. He does not back down but he is scorned and bitter because Libby left him years ago. Alex is not only hoping to get revenge but also the closure he needs in order to move on. However, his interactions with his ex-wife leaves him wondering just how he missed the signs of her unhappiness.

“I tried my best for you.”

“You were always working, Alex.”

“Not all the time. I had a career to build.”

“What about your wife?”

"I loved her. Wasn’t that enough?”

“You didn’t spend any time with her. Ever.”

This story is fun and refreshing. There are so many plot twists that instead of making me cringe made happy. The author wrote this story in a way that had me completely wanting to see what was going to happen next. Who is REALLY pulling the strings in the relationship and the scam? I also love how the author tells this story in Alex’ POV only. It was absolutely fun reading his thoughts and feelings. For once getting into only a man’s head and learning what the heck is thinking was just a really nice change. Alex starts to realize how much he ignored his role in his failed marriage and how he missed the signs of Libby’s pain. Can Alex and Libby find the closure they need or will their love be given a second chance?

“I have never stopped living you, Libby. Not once.”

“I don’t know how to forget you, Alex Lewis. I loved you the day I left and I still love you now, things were just hard.”

Wow, I was a little shocked when I started reading this book and realized that it was on his POV. I am so used to reading the female's POV and afterwards in the sequel or trilogy the male's POV comes along. This was the first and probably the only book for this title and I have to say that I was very impressed having to read a male's POV first instead of the female's.

I was enthralled with Alex Lewis, a sexy, domineering and very demanding CEO. He has been focused soley on his company after his wife slapped him with divorce papers seven years ago. He can't get over her and refuses to move on and find another woman that could make him happy because he's stuck on Libby. For some reason that woman just bewitched him and he can't get over here, even after she left him.

Libby has moved on and made her own company. She did not leave her husband due to money or status. She left him because he was never there for her and she was never his number one priority. She didn't care if he ever struck it rich, she just wanted him to spend time with her, focus on her.

When they both meet again after seven years, sparks reignite and they end up having a short-lived affair. Libby refuses to open old wounds and/or give Alex another chance because she's afraid he hasn't changed and will continue on his workaholic ways. She doesn't want that, although she has never been able to move on either after she divorced Alex.

Can these two damaged souls make amends and make it work once again! Will Alex open up his eyes and realize that Libby means more to him than his company and/or at least try and spend more time with her -- if she decides to give him another chance?

This book really had me going, I loved it and totally loved Alex Lewis. He might have sounded like a total ass and really arrogant but deep down he was a softy and only wanted Libby even after she left him -- he knew he couldn't live without her and he was going to work his ass off in trying to win her back.

You don't normally see these dominating alpha's groveling and trying to apologize -- oh no, no! If anything they expect the woman to just give in to their demands because they are in love with them. Men!!

But Alex has showed Libby that he could be the man that she has always loved and they could make it work this second time around. They both believe they belong together and maybe there is a thing as a second chance even though it's been so long.

Total 5 stars for me. Loved the male POV without knowing what the story was about or having her side of the story first!

"She's the girl I can't forget."

Elizabeth "Libby" Lewis comes back into her ex husband's life through a series of seemingly coincidental events and he feels it's the perfect opportunity for revenge of the broken heart she left him with 7 long years ago.

They each have differing views of what led to their divorce and secrets were kept and lies told. But the CEO of AL Investments is not entirely the man he was at age 23.

"I'm Alex Lewis after all. The multi-millionaire with a jackhammer-sized cock."

He may be arrogant, confident and self-assured but buried beneath his glares, sharp suits and strong words is a damaged man who longs for his soul mate.

Through the eyes of Alex we explore the tale of their reunion, the true extent of their lies and the depth of their love for one another still there underneath the harsh words and hurtful names.

Having a story entirely told from the male POV was like a breath of fresh air. As readers we cry out for the male perspective more and more these days but for this standalone to come in the mind of Alex it was real, it was true and it was an insight we wouldn't have had any grasp of if told from Libby's side.

Our protagonist goes through many emotional changes throughout the story and yet tries to remain the controller in every situation. He makes mistakes proving he is human but ultimately he is still that young man in love with a girl. A girl who had her own troubles to deal with over the 7 years since the breakdown of their marriage.

Beth has written something fresh, new and different to what is mainly on the market currently. Ultimately it is a love story but reading between the lines, it is something original and unique. I adore her style of writing - one not afraid to include any Britishisms and typical phrases - and found myself chuckling away at parts.

Book Dorks everywhere will devour this story with an ace of a storyline! <3

I loooooooved Alex! I loved him right at the beginning when he was heartbroken. I loved the cocky bastard he became. I loved his self-discovery. And through his eyes, we see Libby. Her own heartache and determination and vulnerability. We see the depth of love between them, even as they drifted apart.

Beth's writing is so full of life, and it just gets better and better. Her characters jump off the page. They make me laugh and make me sniffle. They make me hot.

This is a phenomenal second-chance romance! Loved it!!!

Loved it! It's a great story where true love conquers all and shows that it's never too late to put things right. I read this in a day, this is a real page turner, I just had to know how it was all going to end. I loved the fact that it was set in a place I'm familiar with so I was able to visualise the different location which for me made the story more real.great book Beth!

I couldn't wait to get my grubby hands on this book. From the minute I knew Beth was working on it, I was impatiently waiting for the release date. Then, there it was. Sitting so pretty in my Kindle. So I did what I had been wanting to do for months and dived right in. That was it, I was swallowed right up. I couldn't get enough of Alex. He was so broken inside, but on the outside he was keeping up appearances by using every means available to him, to look complete and together. Unfortunately, his facade was about to crumble spectacularly.

Right from the outset, you knew the heartbreak that made Alex, who he was. However, as the story progresses, Beth very cleverly starts to weave Libby's perspective, on what caused the issues in their marriage. That age old problem of communication or the lack of.

What started out as Alex wanting to ruin his ex-wife, ended up being something else entirely. There were a few twists and turns, that left me trying to figure out just who was the good guy in the whole scenario.

If you think you will know how this story will play out, think again, because Beth Ashworth has done a spectacular job of keeping you on your toes and NEEDING to turn the page.

Beth Ashworth unless that fine man Alex, has been bagsied, then he. Is. Mine!
I loved this book and I have to agree. It is her best yet. I was gripped from the start. Well done B, I will hug it out with you soon. D

Mendacious by Beth Ashworth

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Seven years ago Alex and Libby's marriage fell apart, Alex never seemed to move on past Libby. While his luck and savvy business knowledge have increased and resulted in him being much more successful that when he was married to Libby he was has been unable to find love again. A once in a lifetime take over comes across Alex's desk and he is unable to turn it down, a chance to buy out Libby's new company with a taste of sweet revenge for Alex.

I really wanted to love the concept in this book, but the first part came across as stale to me. The writing and technique was executed wonderfully, but the beginning of the book didn't pick up for me for quite some time. I saw what was trying to be accomplished, but I needed the drama and the action sooner, rather than near the end in order to hold my attention. I liked both of the characters and their background and story, Alex is a likable male lead character, but I needed him to act a bit sooner and stop wallowing. This is still a good enjoyable story, just not the grab you buy the collar kind of book I was in the mood for.

Please don't take this as a review not to read, because I know that a lot of others have loved it, and I didn't hate it at all. The story is still a good one, with drama, romance, and suspense.

I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Argh! I found this novel rather frustrating but I certainly didn't hate it either.

The story opens with a brief prologue, setting the scene without giving very much away at all.

Skip ahead 7 years...and we get to know Alex Lewis. He's driven, career obsessed and very successful.
He's egotistical but somehow still likable. His need for revenge drives him and an opportunity suddenly presents itself.

I found Libby to be very irritating. I couldn't summon much empathy for her and didn't feel like she ever really deserved Alex.

As the story progressed I found myself wishing that Alex would retain the hard exterior I first loved about him and without giving to much away (which is very hard not to do) I found him becoming a bit too sappy for me.

However, there's espionage and corporate backstabbing mixed in with this story and despite finding it a tad exasperating, it was still a quick fun read.

I've read dual PoV and thoroughly enjoyed them, so when I realised this was just from Alex's point of view I was quite excited, I was right to be too, as it was interesting, funny and moving.

Libby, left Alex seven years ago, it's not been easy for her but she's made a success of herself, but now there lives are about to crash together again. Alex wants revenge on Libby, but upon seeing one another again, things change.

Another thing about this book that added to my enjoyment is the fact its based in UK, places I know well.

Expect twists and turns and some heart searching from both characthers.

An enjoyable read which flows well and would have finished it in one sitting, but needed some sleep!

ARC REVIEW WATCH OUT FOR SPOILERS

This story line was great. I love second chance romances. This one was a little bit different. There was a lot of drama and intrigue in this story. There were not a lot of love scenes. This story was about revenge for past wrongs and learning to love again. I loved that the main characters didn't just see each other and fall back in love immediately. They have loved each other all through the years of their divorce. But they understand that they have to thoroughly hash through their past. With all the plots for revenge and the espionage, can the two of them really get to know each other again? This story really had guts to it. Can't wait to read more from this author.

This was a really good read. I feel like I didn't have a lot of angst or much feeling about the book, but it really carried you on. The story of a couple who divorced because they were to young to be married, and the hubby was a workaholic and the wife was feeling neglected.. needy. They divorce... connect 7 years later and try to screw each other over, except they realize they actually still love each other and the rest is history.
The ride along the way is pretty entertaining though.
I'd suggest reading it if your looking for an inbetweener (waiting for the next book in your 5star series to come out and need something to get your mind off it)

The story was exciting from the very start. I like the writing style, I didn't get bored though towards the ending, the excitement waned a bit but it was okay.

Written in the hero's POV. I enjoyed it.

It took awhile before the main characters saw each other.

I didn't expect the story to be great, I had a high expectation on a previous novel that I've read and It was disappointing so I dropped all the high expectations to avoid disappointment, but thank god this novel was good!

I love the characters' pissing contest!

I'm not sure if I've read a story like this, wherein the characters got divorced, then they got together again. Smooth story flow!!!

Reading this book I actually almost forgot the heroine's name, the plot line, the hot sex scenes because I was so absolutely fascinated with the heroine's ex husband Alex's fixation, dare I say obsession with Holli's legs in almost every chapter. What was the author's intention to put so much emphasis on those AMAZING legs?

Alex musings:

Chapter 3

I take my time taking in every inch of her. The dress fits her slightly curvaceous frame to perfection and I can’t help but stare. Those legs of hers ... Jesus, I can’t tear my fucking eyes away.“So, do you wanna talk?” Holli breaks the ice and takes a seat on the sofa opposite me. She’s wearing a fitted purple skirt that stops about mid-thigh and showcases her AMAZING legs.

Don’t look at her legs.
Don’t look at her legs.
Look anywhere but the legs.
I’m too busy imagining how well those legs of hers would look wrapped around my waist ... or neck. Jesus, I haven’t reacted to a girl like this in so long. It almost feels wrong that I’m so attracted to her.

Chapter 5

“So, do you wanna talk?” Holli breaks the ice and takes a seat on the sofa opposite me. She’s wearing a fitted purple skirt that stops about mid-thigh and showcases her AMAZING legs.

Chapter 8

My eyes drift from her face for a nanosecond and I find myself staring at her legs in the simple mini-dress she has on. Those fucking legs are taunting me. Nicely tanned and perfectly shaped …Focus, Alex!

Chapter 9

..a young girl saunters in wearing a black skirt suit, showcasing the most amazing pair of legs. Shit. “It’s nice of you to join us, Holli.”

Aside from Holli's distracting legs the writing in it's entirety was basically flawless though I found the reasoning for the divorce seven years ago to be an extremely weak one.I guess the heroine was a bit feeble minded than. She certainly has not improved over time. Why was she also intent on revenge over something the hero did not have a clue about.I expected some sort of earth suffering confession, instead it was practically empty air.

The idea behind the revenge theme was an even weaker one. Here we have a hero that did not languish in prison for seven years. He was not celibate. He actually was an active man whore yet he decides to act out childishly on something that occurred eons ago.I was just not getting his reasoning nor feeling his suffering. There was no rhyme nor concrete reason for anything that unfolded within these pages.

Regardless of any temptation presented the hero did have filthy mouth & was always firm & direct in his rejection responses towards any predatory females which is a valued trait in any alpha male wanting to stay faithful to his chosen woman and that alone earns this book three stars even if the plot itself was far fetched.

Book Review - Mendacious by Beth Ashworth - **** bittersweet stars

Mendacious was one of those books when I totally judged a book by it’s cover. More fool me then, because I was expecting an alpha asshole.

What I got instead was so much better, that rare thinking piece that examines a ‘normal’ relationship and the rot that can set in and corrode a relationship, if you don’t keep talking and checking the health of it.

Seven years ago Alex’s wife walked out on him. Since then, he’s avoided any possible relationships of any kind - after all no-one can rip your heart out if you don’t hand it them in the first place. No, what he’s been doing since then is rapidly building a business empire to prove something and occasionally scratching the itch. And his ex wife’s name has been the thing that couldn’t be mentioned, until now.

Now Alex’s friend and business partner has brought him a proposal. Go in as a secret partner in Libby’s business and then take over once inside. The perfect way to enact revenge on her, the only problem being, once in, he needs to get close to her for it to play out that way.

They say in life that many things often don’t go to plan and I think you could say what happens next is one of those shining examples. Libby doesn’t plan on rolling over and letting her ex ruin what’s she’s rebuilt of her life. Alex isn’t the only one carrying scars from the breakdown of their relationship, and working together is reopening wounds on both sides.

At this stage, we start to see back what really happened all those years ago and again, these parts and the realisation are the makings of this book. To see small moments in time and the mass damage it caused reminds me of the saying that a butterfly flapping it’s wings can cause an earthquake on the other side of the world. What appears to be small things in a relationship, when stacked on top of one another, become a huge pack of cards that come falling down.

This time around when the truth is out, is there anything there to save?

This is a bold brave move on Beth’s behalf for me. To create such a thinking piece that could make people reflect on their own relationships. It totally worked for me. More like this again in the future please Beth.
