So, I've been making handcrafted soaps and lotions for over 14 years. I wanted to find a book to help guide a friend in the basics of both begnning soaping and also lotion making. This book borders on dangerous! No mention of lye safety, no real measurements and a sketchy recipe with a pretty serious water discount .... I am absolutely appalled that this was even published!
She calls Melt and Pour a wax that you just simply melt! LOL, uh, yeah, there's a little more to it than that and here's a fact for you, it's not wax, it's glycerin! Ms. Lockhart also seems to think Hand Milled is simply melting scraps in a mold - um, wrong, AGAIN!
The biggest problem I have is calling Cold Process soap - "non-natural due to lye chemicals that may remain in the soap when you use it". SMH! If the author had any clue as to the science behind the process, she would realize that upon the mixing of oils, butters, with a Lye/water mixture, that saponification takes place and Viola! We have soap! Not lye, actual soap! It is as natural as natural can be! When done correctly, using a soap/lye calculator (another thing that the author never, ever mentions!!!), there is no excess lye.
Here's an incredibly scary and dangerous passage: "Make sure to mix the oils together separately once you have prepared the lye and water mixture on the stove to ensure it somes out the way it should and provides the all over clean feeling you're after." Huh? Please, for all that is holy, never ever prepare your lye and water mixture over the stove! And the rest of that paragraph? Yeah, I didn't really get it either and I've been making soap a long time.
She also recommends putting in essential oils at 10% of the recipe! No!!! First off, there are usage rates for every essential oil that range from 0.25% -1.0% at the very highest! As Ms. Lockhart states, "Add a good ratio of essential oils to boost the scent of the bar to makesure that enough rubs off when the person is bathing. Putting just 10% in the mix can provide an all over scent that anyone will love." SMH!!!
Ms. Lockhart also states to "Use different fruits, herbs, and natural items throughout the soap instead of scenting them. These items need to be used a bit more, with a larger amount to get the desired results, but they can smell just as good as oils and are better for you in the long run!" This is when I no longer gave her the benefit of the doubt! Any additive such as cucumber puree, my personal favorite - blueberries - will lose all scent during the saponification process! You can add a boat load of lavender flowers and it will look absolutely lovely! But if you want it to smell like lavender, then add lavender essential oil, added at trace - in the correct amount, of course! This goes with any additive - of course, non-scented soap smells amazing to me.
Here's a message to all new and advanced soap makers: always wear safety gear! Eye goggles, gloves, and long sleeves! Always run any and every soap recipe through a soap calculator, you can find them online. Never trust a recipe that is in a book, given to you or found online on a forum/blog. Soap making is serious business but so much fun and very fulfilling. I digress ...
So, I could go on and on, but I think I've proved that this is a highly dangerous book to any novice or *advanced* soapmaker. I think Ms. Lockhart should stick to giving massages in her cozy one bedroom apartment and leave the soapmaking advice to the professionals!
If you or a friend are interested in learning to make lotions/body butters, etc ... do not purchase anything from this author! There are many other books that will guide you in a dependable, safe, efficient, and correct manner!
Quick read and very informative. Nice ideas and options. I feel very confident about trying out different soap recepies and even the idea of sharing with friends
