Sugartown #4

Now Leaving Sugartown

Rate this book
Pepper Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the understatement of the century. Sammy Belle spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He'd been her strength, her sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have. They were never meant to be together. They gave in anyway. And just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran. Now twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too many screws loose who's down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten up as her heart. Sugartown's most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets. Can this good country boy survive Pepper's cruel city world, or will the whole thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity? One thing is for certain: He's crazy about her. She's just crazy. Warning: Intended for an 18+ audience. Contains sexual content, oodles of profanity, a firefighter so hot you may need a very cold shower, and one pink-haired crazy Harajuku girl.

ARC provided by author in exchange of honest review.

Reading Now Leaving Sugartown is a bittersweet read for me. If you must know, I am a bit sad to say goodbye to the Sugartown cast since this series made me a fan of Carmen Jenner and I absolutely love and adore her.

#LeavingForSugartown

Now Leaving Sugartown was a heartbreaking emotional read. Carmen has a way of making her readers FEEL but Now Leaving Sugartown was something different. All the emotions were so RAW and made you really feel for Sammy and Pepper. I wasn't expecting this book to break my heart and feel so much pain and sadness for Sammy and Pepper so it completely surprised me on how tragic and yet beautiful Carmen was able to tell their story. What I love about Carmen's book is that she gives you HEART, GRIT, and lots of STEAMY scenes. She never fails to give her readers a full story.

This book is all about FEELS and experiencing the journey of Pepper and Sammy. This was more than a romance story but a tale of two people learning to cope, lean on each other for support, and rekindle a love and bond that can withstand the years. A love that was meant to be. What I love about this book was the message that sometimes you have to let go especially knowing the person you love needs help. I honestly can say Sammy stole my heart especially towards the end of the book. His devotion and love for Pepper just made me SIGH!!!

I honestly don't want to say goodbye to Sugartown but I am beyond happy that Ms. Carmen brought us Elijah, Ana, Holly, Jackson, Sammy and Pepper!! Once again, Carmen will tug your heartstrings with her honest, raw and beautiful storytelling.

*** LOVED IT,LOVED IT,LOVED IT!!***

Have LOVED every book in this series and this was no exception

So we have the story of the original characters grown up kids/siblings...SAM and PEPPER...

If ever two people were meant to be together it's these two...they are total opposites(but so good together)...SAM is all sensible,doing three jobs that help the community..Pepper is wild,unpredictable and I just loved her and her comments/inner dialogue were so funny

Something occurs to me just then,Sam is a fireman.Okay just for a second put aside the fact that you're imagining those rock hard abs ,all greased up and covered in soot and ash and splashed all over the month of January,and think about this....SAM is a fireman.Fireman S-

"Holy Shit !!.....You're Fireman Sam! We used to watch that show?"

They both fight the obvious love they have for each other

This Author writes some of the funniest dialogue between characters...especially Jake..( I want his book )

Dude,see that?That glazed over look in her eyes right there?This is why you need to be telling bitches that shit when we go out to pick up.Look at her;right now she's imagining sliding down your fireman' s pole"

The sex is HOT and steamy, the ice cube scene was mmmm.....

Loved catching up with all the other characters,have absolutely loved this series....just pre ordered Revelry....can't wait

Carmen Jenner...you rock girl!!!

open quote pink (Pepper)I can’t promise I’m not going to make you crazy.
--Then we’ll be crazy together.(Sammy)

Normally, I have to take a breather to gather up my thoughts and write up a review for a book, and Now Leaving Sugartown was no different. Only, it was.

Author Carmen Jenner, definitely ups the “crazy” to her patented Sugartown series and makes you wonder what she's going to come up with next! I mean, if you thought Holly was a hell raising firecracker, then just wait till you meet Pepper! *almost running Sammy down with that ice cream truck! Hahaha!*

Now many years post Greetings From Sugartown..

Sammy Belle “Sam” and Pepper Ryan, are all grown up, and have always shared a special bond that many would look upon as brother/sister but it’s not. It’s MUCH MORE than that.

As many of you Sugartownies remember, Sammy is the little brother of Ana (“Ana Banana”) and Pepper is the daughter of Holly and ex-flame, rocker Cooper.

Growing up together, they’ve always been each other’s rock and constant shelter from the rain. But as feelings and new awareness’ began to grow, and the two feel their relationship developing into something more-- so do prejudices, insecurities, and tensions.

Now, fast forward five years later…And with her aspiring tattoo career flushed down the drain and her love life in tatters, Pepper returns to Sugartown, to plan out her next move and to face the boy who’s heart she shattered after one fateful encounter.

Will a second chance at love, be the charm?

What will happen when time runs short, and what she thought she could protect and shield Sammy from, turns to be ultimately her worst enemy?

open quote pink Quit fucking running, Pepper…that’s all you need to do—just quit running.
open quote pink No, we’re not. I ran five years ago because I knew I couldn’t be what you needed. I wanted you to be happy, and I knew I couldn’t give you that. Not in the long run.

Can Sugartown's most notorious bachelor convince the one that got away to stay and take a chance on him?... On each other?

open quote pink I want you, Pepper. I’ve never wanted anyone else.
...
open quote pink Together we were motherfucking fireworks.

Can he [Sammy] prove to Pepper that he can be the pillar of salvation, security, and the hope she needs to carry her on through the darkness and save her from her own horrid destruction?

And Pepper. Will Pepper be able to erase scars of the past, while salvaging and fighting for a future with Sammy? Will she be able to muster up the courage and admit that she needs help and find redemption in herself?

Are these two polar opposites truly meant for one other? Or will history repeat itself and lead to utter heartbreak and devastation?

open quote pink Pepper, if it’s one thing life with you has taught me, is that it’s always messy.

open quote pink If you leave me, I’m coming with you. You can run as far and as fast as you want, but I’ll be right behind you. I’ll be right there.

Or are some things far beyond you to fix?

open quote pink I hated that I wasn’t enough to save her from herself. That I couldn’t be the one to fix her. But I hate the thought of losing her more.

We return to Sugartown one last time for Pepper & Sammy’s story, but these two kids are all grown now.

Screenshot_31

Sammy Belle knew one thing. Little was his to protect. He spent his childhood chasing away her ghost, but in the end it was Pepper than ran. But now she’s back. They were raised like siblings, but the attraction could not be denied and now that Pepper has returned to Sugartown, Sam is not about to let her go.... again. But those ghost... yeah they’ve turned into demons and Sam is going to have to push harder than he’s ever pushed before if he wants to make her his.

Screenshot_5

Wow. I adore this series but did not expect this story. Pepper’s story was so damn emotional and so much more damaged than I ever expected. Sure I figured she’d have an issue or two. but I never anticipated seeing so many broken pieces of this character. The banter between these two (and Jake) was executed flawlessly and getting the crazy antics of the rest of the cast sprinkled throughout this book was just the icing on the cake.

Screenshot_7

There is far too many secret this book holds for me to say much more. But I will say, read this series and this author. Carmen Jenner has such a unique voice. Her writing is witty and hilarious and there really isn’t another author that can match her skills when it comes to banter. I was captivated from page one and I loved that we got pieces of the past sprinkled in to make this story whole. I am going to miss this gang but looking forward to Coop’s book and his spin off series!

I had a case of serious anticipation for this last book in the series and it was a bittersweet feeling once I got my hands on it just knowing it was the last visit to Sugartown we'll take. Carmen Jenner certainly upped the 'crazy' level with Pepper and Sams story.

I had an instant love for Pepper. She was a pink haired, tattooed, firecracker and right from the start she stole my heart by showing back up in town driving that ice cream van. I knew instantly that I wanted good things for her. Sam Belle, oh Sammy.. it was so great seeing him grown. Most readers will know him as Ana's little brother and gosh, did he grow into a yummy guy!

These two have such a history and connection to each other, it's unlike many others you'll read about. There's so much push and pull from Pepper throughout the story but it's not the irritating push. Pepper is bipolar and is consumed with self-doubt and so many personal struggles. I FELT so much for her at times, all those feelings she was going through but also wouldn't let herself really feel. There's so much emotion written within this book and although it can be heavy at times, it all fits in beautifully with the crazy and silly moments that only Sugartown fans will truly appreciate.

I cried and laughed while reading this book. Even more so knowing this is the last time I'll see Holly and Jack have a hilarious fight or Ana and Elijah be fuck hot in the background of a scene (haha). I also got so bloody angry at certain characters for decisions they were making and stubborn arguments that were had. I see this as an emotional yet uplifting book. It's raw at times and may make you feel uncomfortable but this author has such a great way of handling her heavy moments along with a fitting almost humor that not many others can pull off.. maybe it's the laid back Aussie in her.

This story is so much more than a romance. I see it as a tale of two people learning to deal with life and lean on one another for support. It's a love story and a bond that will never break.

Sugartown is definitely one of my favorite fictional towns and as much as I am sad to see it end, i'm so happy to have shared this awesome journey with these characters and all the other Sugartownies out there. I remember reading book #1 the week it was released and I can't believe from there we've been lucky enough to get 2 spin off series going following different characters and stories.

I honestly can't wait for more from this author. Well done!

So, mental illness in loved ones and I are unfortunately the best of buds. TMI moment, Ladies. My mother suffered from Major Depressive Disorder which caused multiple Fugue States during my childhood. (Her issues were mostly environmental causation.) IMO...Other than physical/sexual abuse, there'a not a much more fucked up way to impact a kid's perspective when a parent has these on the regular. I also had a cousin who was bipolar and lived with us during the down swing times because we were a safe harbor. (Her issues were genetic). So I've seen and lived both sides' causation (environmental/genetic)...meaning there was a specific cause for their crazy.

[[Yes, my family's all crazy. There's a reason why I'm 7th generation NOLA living in the same home the previous generations did. I can, however, pass for normal while amongst civilians. (*wild-cackling*) ]]

HOWEVER...Here, in this novel, there's never an explanation of WHY the h started down her path of self-harm. And therefore, there's never real causation and I can't feel the truth or authenticity or whatevs of the h.

This opens with a scene in which the h is a child and is obviously terrified in an enclosed dirty space and the H comes to her rescue. The reader never understands how this comes to pass, where she really is, or what its immediate impact in her life is. Fast forward, our h is a teen, and now a cutter who is also bi-polar.

There are not even dots here to connect.

I'm left with: Claustrophobia can cause cutting.

WTF?!?!?

Halfway or more through the novel we learn the h lost her virginity to the H in a closet at a party and the whole high school caught them. The H is widely considered to be her "brother." (The h's mom's best friend is the H's sister and he's 6 years older than h. The h's mom's BF is the H's cousin by marriage).

After that incident, we learn the H found the h after a particularly brutal cutting session and assumed she was committing suicide. After that, she's hospitalized and diagnosed Bipolar.

Now I'm confused. She was cutting way before all that shit went down. And that would seem to be better causation than the claustrophobia. I'm not being dense. But that opening scene was fucking intense. And then NOTHING...what the fuck happened to this girl that had her cutting way before the bullying? Being found in a dirty dark place just isn't enough. And if it's genetic, fucking say that. Just give some fucking causation that doesn't leave the reader hanging.

Why am I making a big deal about this?

BECAUSE THE WHOLE PLOT REVOLVES AROUND A MENTAL ILLNESS WHOSE CAUSATION IS NEVER EXPLAINED.

If the author is leaving it open to interpretation, then I'm left feeling that because the h had the shit scared out of her for some crazy ass unknown reason and her BFF, the H, saved her, she started cutting to relieve mental anguish that wasn't explained...unless she felt her feelings for the H were so "sick," she was "sick" and that when she got caught with him she was humiliated, but wait, she was already cutting...

That's just not enough :/

And if I can't understand the WHY of a character's motivation...the rest is moot.

3 stars because I enjoyed it for what it was...but a powerhouse on mental illness it was not.

Safety: OW before and after h loses virginity to H, but never the actual Deets. OW date that goes nowhere after H/h see each other again. OM BF she walks out on and never hears from again. Crazy OM (former fuckbuddy) after H/h return to Melbourne. But no active OW/OM during novel.

Some books you want to read, some books you eagerly anticipate, some leave you bat sh*t crazy where you bombard the author, begging them to drop everything else and write said book. Now Leaving Sugartown was that for me... I've spent the better part of the last six months gently nudging Ms Jenner for her words, desperate for this book, waiting with baited breath if you will.

Some books lift you up, some tear you apart, some leave you questioning the way you view the world, and some cut you to the quick, because you truly understand the story, you FEEL like the characters were written only for you, you share their joys, their sorrows, their tragedies, their triumphs, because for one brief fleeting moment they are you, you've lived their story, whether it be literally or metaphorically. And I have to tell you, this book, these characters - I connected with them more deeply then even I would like to admit, because I've lived some of Pepper's journey and like Jenner has described, life isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes there's pain and hurt and feelings of inadequacy before you learn what you should have already known, that you are enough, so much more than enough. For me, I've felt every single crazy, hurt, inadequate word that Pepper felt. I've felt the pressure of trying to be what people wanted, I've felt the sheer agony of feeling like you're standing in a crowded room, screaming out for help, begging for someone to truly see you, to see your flaws, to see the pain you hide behind the make up and the perfect smile... For me to feel this so intrinsically is a testament to the talent Jenner possesses.

I'm not going to regurgitate the blurb for you, what I will tell you is Sammy and Pepper are all grown up, they've both harbored secret desires toward the other for longer then either would like to admit, their relationship has always been volatile, bordering between big brother protective and knight in shining armor Sammy has always been the fixer, but when Pepper feels like her only option is running away, Sammy is left feeling like maybe he wasn't enough to save her after all. When Pepper finally returns to Sugartown these two might just be able to remember all the reasons why they were always so close, if Pepper can stop running and start talking Sam might finally be able to prove he's strong enough when she needs to break.

Some books leave you smiling, some get you hot and bothered and every so often a book comes along that makes you feel just a little less alone, they make it not so hard to take a walk down memory lane, some reinforce for you that the person you are today is a reflection of your journey and to be proud of that. But most of all some books remind you of the strength of the human spirit, they show you sometimes the toughest battles you'll ever face rage inside your own mind, and admitting that isn't something you should be ashamed of. I applaud Carmen Jenner for continuing to tackle heavy subjects with flair and sensitivity, but more than that I applaud her for writing something that made me feel complete and whole in a way that few books ever have.

Pepper and Sam have been dancing around one another ever since they were little. So, it's not really surprising when they start hooking up. It does, however, surprise everyone when one day she just ups and leaves the little town behind.

She comes back eventually and honestly Sam isn't a huge fan of her ditching him in the first place. It takes a while for things to get good between them and even then, I felt bad for the guy. The teasing was endlessly happening, and I just kept waiting for the moment to break them both. Once it did, things were pretty good between them. Then they weren't.

Now Pepper goes through so much. Internally and externally. Sam is kind of her person, in a way, that helps ease her back to some kind of normalcy. It just hurt when she kept things from him and started hurting herself in the process. Still, he was there for her no matter what and eventually had to betray her so that she could get some necessary help.

In the end, their story was a little cute, but they truly annoyed me for most of this book. I did, however, really like how we dove into mental illness and how having a support system is huge thing for anyone going through this. It's not an easy battle to fight but with people behind you it's a bit easier. It just takes that person some time to finally realize it.

Wow... after reading the whole series and to see Sammy as a grown man, it's mind-blowing.
However, I actually don't know how I feel about this story. It took me longer than usual to finish it and I guess I wasn't that eager to finish it. I love Sammy, he was always the best part of every book but I don't know about Pepper. She had her demons and she tried to fight them daily and while it was really kind what she was trying to do while pushing Sam away, she didn't see how it was making him sad and unhappy.
I'm giving the story 4 stars for Sammy and for being able to see the whole crew again. I love these characters! This is one of my fav book series, and I enjoyed every part of it.
This author is great and I can't wait to read more of her books.

Wow.

Just....WOW.

I'm rendered a little speechless by this book, and that's not something that happens to me very often. Now Leaving Sugartown....hit me in the feels and it hit me HARD. What kind of book make your eyes and cheeks wet on one page, and your panties wet on the next? The perfect f--king kind of book. This f--king book.

Pepper Ryan has been in love with Sam almost her entire life. Perfect, golden Sammy Belle, who has been always her protector, her savior, her best friend, and the one man she can't have. She's a special kind of crazy, and she doesn't want to drag him down with her.

Sammy has spent his life taking care of his Little. His Pepper. And when it seemed like they finally got it together, and could be together, she ran. But now, she's back. And this time, not even her brand of crazy can make him let her go.

Carmen Jenner just about slayed me with this book. I've loved Welcome to Sugartown and Elijah Cade with a fierce passion, but Sammy Belle... God damn Sammy Belle might have made me question my number one Sugartown love. (Not really, Elijah, I still love you most....but your brother-in-law is F.I.N.E). He's over-protective, maybe a little misguided at times, certainly blind to Pepper's copious faults, 100% loyal and kind of perfect. I lost a little bit of my heart to this man, and I am totally fine with that.

And Pepper. What can I say about crazy, f--king Pepper? I've been there, you know. And I get what she was feeling, the choices she made because, actually, she had no choice. I wanted to wrap her in my own arms, and make it better for her. Show her there is a light at the end of the tunnel, that there is another way, that it can be okay eventually. The mother in me, she wanted to take it all away for manic Pepper.

Carmen couldn't have described her battle better. Either of their battles better -- Pepper's against her demons, Sammy's against Pepper’s illness and his inability to save her from it. Now Leaving Sugartown had me laughing one minute, panting the next, and close to tears -- or out-and-out crying -- the entire time I was reading. It was real, raw and hit close to home. A punch to the gut. A book that grabbed my attention, demanded my attention, held my attention, and overtook to me completely.

It might seem like I am gushing, and maybe I am, because I can't adequately and succinctly explain how this book affected me. Hmm, I guess I wasn’t speechless after all. It's simply that I have all these words, all these feelings that this book provoked in me, and I want to share as many of them as I can, so you understand...As much as I love Elijah, will always love Elijah, I have no hesitation in saying that Now Leaving Sugartown is Ms. Jenner's best work yet. ~ Beth, 6 stars. Six HUGE f--king stars.

~~~
What a long, strange trip it's been. Yes, I'm dating myself by quoting The Grateful Dead. Carmen! Please, say it ain't so! This cannot be the end of this series. No way. Nuh-uh, I refuse to accept that! But it seems we've come full circle. Now Leaving Sugartown is the story of Sammy, Ana's baby brother, and Pepper, Holly's daughter. Don't let that fool ya! Carmen's aged them like a soap opera and they're not little kids anymore.
As I've come to expect from this series, it has Ms. Jenner's signature quirky humor, wee bits of angst to get those feelings flowing and HOT HOT HOT sex! Holy mother of wet sn*tch, does this book put you through the wringer! Emotions all over the damn place! You're laughing, you're squirming in your seat and then you're freaking crying! This is epic book hangover material.
I'd say this could be read as a standalone, but I think there's definitely more enjoyment to be had if you read the previous books first. The characters all make cameos in Now Leaving Sugartown and it gives you a lot more insight to their dynamics. Besides, you don't want to miss out on Jackarse and Holly, or Elijah and Ana. One-Click them all and enjoy yourself! ~ Erin, 5 stars
Fucking Jenner.
She got me with this one, I have to admit. I shed a tear. Damn it all.
I went into Now Leaving Sugartown knowing I would love Sammy and being extremely apprehensive as to how I would feel about Pepper, she was raised by Holly after all - and her mothering skills were something I questioned.
I came out of it really loving them both. Which is something, because Pepper isn't the easiest to love, on the surface.
Pepper has issues. In spades. But they aren't really frivolous or manufactured. For the most part anyway. She has real problems and she never learned how to deal with those problems.
She never had to. Sammy was always there to take them away, to make things better. Until Pepper realized that staying in Sugartown and being with Sammy - wasn't what she could do. Thus beginning years of 'getting by', maintaining, but not really living and never loving.
Pepper's ass landing back in Sugartown leads to hard decisions, big mistakes, epic breakdowns and the possibility of happily ever after. But not after one hell of a long, tough struggle.
That struggle is what did me in. The moments of complete and utter despair. The minutes spent in a dark, sad and lonely mind. The times when you feel there is no hope for this girl, for the love of her life or their future. That struggle is scary and broke my heart, for both Pepper and Sammy...the man that just wants to love and save her...just like he always has.
Love isn't always enough to fix every problem and Sammy has to endure some pretty horrible things in an attempt to help the only girl that has ever mattered. His trials were no less heartbreaking. I felt all the turmoil right along with him.
This is not just a sad tale of a broken girl though. In signature Jenner style, she sprinkles in some witty remarks and crazy hijinks to balance it out.
Now Leaving Sugartown is an emotional end to the series and I was happy to see Sammy get to tell his story, it's a good one - an important one - one that teaches you that life isn't always rainbow farting unicorns. Sometimes you're handed a shit deal but that doesn't mean you don't deserve better...sometimes it just takes extra effort and a whole lot of love.
Gahhhhhhh! The last book!!
Sammy is the brother of Ana and Pepper is the daughter of Holly; they’re both finally grown up and struggling with their feelings for each other.
This book tackles some serious issues and may have triggers for some people. I certainly found it hard to read at times so was thankful that the comedy elements were still there to lighten the mood when it became too heavy.
Pepper and Sam are perfect for each other, but their age difference is an issue (Sam is 6 yrs older) and that fact that their were brought up like siblings is a huge problem for Sam and he really struggles to see past it.
This is a perfect ending to the Sugartown series and I have enjoyed every second of these books; I’m so sad it’s all over.
**Blogger Note~~ I still can't eloquently put into words the awesomeness of Now Leaving Sugartown. Just know that this book is FANTASTIC and needs to be read along with the other 3 books that also share the Sugartown title. One day I may do this review justice but today, this is what you get. (*-*)
Talk about one hek of a ride!! As a reader I can’t believe the time that has passed, I can’t believe this is the end. The greedy non-writer in me doesn’t want to believe this is the end of the series, but it is and Carmen Jenner has pulled all the punches; put in her time card and delivered us one amazing book. True to her form, NLS is so snarky and sexy, but also Carmen has went one step further and went into a place that’s a bit more seductive in a frantic way.
We are brought back to Sugartown, years later to the adult lives of Sammy Belle and Pepper Ryan. These two have grown up together and with a six year age gap when life starts to get complicated so do their feelings. So when adulthood opens up the opportunity to explore their feelings, Sam and Pepper stumble thru only to wind up getting messy and Pepper takes off into the big city. Fast forward a few years and Pepper needs to come back home. Back to the normalcy, back to family and back to herself, but who is that? Pepper doesn’t have a clue, but she’s certain that her level of crazy cannot be handled by Sam who has never stopped waiting for Pepper. Only thing is Sam can do more than handle her crazy, and OMG can Sam handle himself! He’s so hot. It just has to be said. 
As per the usual Jenner style, I was completely consumed in this story. From the cover reveal, to the snippets posted around social media, for me to say that I was bouncing with nervous energy for this book to finally come into my hands is a serious understatement. I literally stopped what I was doing and reading to go back to Sugartown! If I could’ve jumped into my kindle I would have!
Let’s talk about the magic of the writing. I already said this but it bears repeating, I felt just as crazy pants as the characters in this book. One minute I would be out loud laughing with the many outlandish ways that the female anatomy is described to clutching my shirt in hopes to let my heart break free of my chest to relieve the pain I felt. Let me also says how fantastic it was to go into the deep allure of the undeniable chemistry ever present everywhere in the book. And what’s more is the purposeful way Carmen has broached the sensitive subject of a manic personality tied unconventionally with wit, flair and sexiness. Harajuku style.
WOW. This review is all over the place. I apologize for it but I won’t edit it because honestly, I loved everything about this book. I loved every word of the Sugartown Series. I love every way Carmen pulls all the feelings from me. I love how I’m constantly surprised with the twists weaved into each plotline. I adore each and every character! The vivid way you are put into a story by Carmen Jenner is a style that can’t be duplicated. Enjoy the Sugartown Series as I have. Share them with everyone you know who loves to read. Respect them for the simplistic Brilliancy they are.
Thank you Carmen Jenner for having this reader along your Sugartown journey! I will forever hold these stories near and dear to me and as always I can’t wait for what’s going to be your next adventure in writing!
Review by Lisa Kane
The thing I know about Carmen Jenner's books is that there will always be parts that will gut you like a fish. Moments in the story that will leave your soul open and bleeding. This one-was more like hemorrhaging.
Pepper Ryan-Harris-Rowe and Sammy Belle are familiar characters from the previous books. Pepper is the daughter of Holly and Coop, although Jackson raised her, as Coop spends most of his time touring with Taint, his band. Sammy is the son of Bob, whose other offspring is Ana Belle, Elijah's wife. Sammy is 6 years older than Pepper and has always made it his mission to protect her. Somewhere along the lines things got blurred and as she became a beautiful teenager, Sammy's feelings morphed from brotherly love to one more of a sexual nature. But he would not let himself give in to those feelings, in spite of Pepper's attempts to seduce him. On the other hand, Sammy might not be able to have Pepper in the way he wanted her, but he made damn sure to c#*k block (or whatever you would call the female equivalent of that) the guys who lusted around her.
When she graduated from high school finally the two acted on their real feelings for each other. The thing is Pepper has real demons that plague her, voices that tell her horrible things about herself. I don't want to spoil the storyline but her inner struggles are heart breaking. She would rather remove herself from Sammy and her family than to ever poison their lives. On the outside she is snarky and sassy and kick ass. But on the inside she is truly tormented.
"I am broken, Sam. I'm not whole. I'm messed up, and I'm more than you can handle."
Five years have gone by since she upped and left Sugartown. Sammy may act as though her being back leaves him unaffected, but his world is upside down again. There is so much love between these two. I think Sammy just may be my favorite resident in Sugartown, he is such a caring person and always places Pepper above himself.
I loved this story. I devoured each of the books in this series, and while each had their WTF moments, this one was more of a series of anguished moments, tempered with lots of steamy sexy scenes and ones flavored with witty banter and humor. But as in all of Carmen Jenner's books, this one had raw, gritty passages that made my eyes wet. I'm for one sorry to leave Sugartown, this was one of my favorite series!
"If you leave me, I'm coming with you. You can run as far and as fast as you want, but I'll be right behind you. I'll be right here."
He places his hand against the centre of my chest.
"Right where I've always been. And one of these days, Pepper, you're gonna realize that your feet are awfully f#*king tired."
They say all good things must come to an end, well eventually and even though I knew this was the last hurrah in Sugartown, nothing could prepare me for the impending journey that Carmen Jenner took me on.
Little Sammie Belle, is definitely not little anymore... anywhere *blushes* I thought I loved Elijah, I thought I was infatuated with Jackson, but let me tell you Fireman Sam has seduced my heart. Our little Sugartown cutie with the potty mouth is 100% ALL MALE, a Viking to be exact and has definitely grown up into a fine specimen.
But what really makes his character, is that he feels. He is a man that cares no matter the circumstances. A man who loves relentlessly.
Unyielding.
Unwavering.
His love for Pepper Ryan- Harris- Rowe is undeniable and anchored in the depths of his soul. She is love in his eyes and he is her very reason to breath.
Pepper. Little...
Let me just say I am in love, utterly consumed, completely captivated by and with this character. Her journey is just as beautiful as it is breathtaking. Just as powerful as it is meaningful. Her personality, no matter how crazy and wild it is; is simply intoxicating. She is so much of her mom with her lewd comments, but worse in a way. Imagine Holly times ten and we get Pepper. From her pink hair, inked body to the brokenness that clouds her soul; I am enamored. At her weakest she is strong; at every breaking point, she is an unmovable mountain.
Together, their chemistry is fiery as they embark on this emotional roller coaster of a relationship. Did I laugh? Um, yes until my cheeks hurt. Did I lay down in my bed and cry into my pillow for the pain that these two characters experienced? I did, and as I write this review now tears are staining my cheeks.
To say I cried would be an understatement. I wept. My heart shattered as my soul dissolved into a million tiny tears. Now Leaving Sugartown broke me in every way possible. I don't think I have ever been so crushed in my life. This book holds a message, one that will touch every part of you. It's about survival. It's an internal war− battling mental illnesses, fighting your personal perception, going up against yourself. Carmen Jenner not only educates us, but she gives us a deeper understanding. Her writing is effortlessly flawless and her words touched me in a way that I felt them every where. In me. On me. Flowing through me as she healed me of my own insecurities. This story has become a part of me. I recommend this book, a million times over. It will force you to really see yourself, the person hiding within.
I was honored to receive an ARC for NLS. It was F*CKIN FANTASTIC!! This is the 4th and final book in this series. Writing this review is killing me. I’m heart-broken that this series is over. Pepper is sassier than her mom (Holly, Book #2 Enjoy Your Stay). Sam is sexy and a fireman need I say more. Pepper struggled through some issues that only Sam was able to help her with when she was younger. Now that they are all grown up the struggles are not as easy to get through as they once were. I've never cried so much while reading a book. This book made me happy one minute then cry the next. Carmen made feel like I was in the room with them. She writes like NO one else I've ever read. She truly did an amazing job with this series and this final book totally took me to another level emotionally. I’m going to really miss them. I’m VERY excited to read more in her new series Savage Saints MC Series. I’m hoping that we get snippets of this Sugartown Gang. ****GREAT JOB CARMEN****
Talk about one hek of a ride!! As a reader I can’t believe the time that has passed, I can’t believe this is the end. The greedy non-writer in me doesn’t want to believe this is the end of the series, but as it stands now it is and Carmen Jenner has pulled all the punches; put in her time card and delivered us one amazing book. True to her form, NLS is so snarky and sexy, but also Carmen has went one step further and went into a place that’s a bit more seductive in a frantic way.
We are brought back to Sugartown, years later to the adult lives of Sammy Belle and Pepper Ryan. These two have grown up together and with a six year age gap when life starts to get complicated so do their feelings. So when adulthood opens up the opportunity to explore their feelings, Sam and Pepper stumble thru only to wind up getting messy and Pepper takes off into the big city. Fast forward a few years and Pepper needs to come back home. Back to the normalcy, back to family and back to herself, but who is that? Pepper doesn’t have a clue, but she’s certain that her level of crazy cannot be handled by Sam who has never stopped waiting for Pepper. Only thing is Sam can do more than handle her crazy, and OMG can Sam handle himself! He’s so hot. It just has to be said. 
As per the usual Jenner style, I was completely consumed in this story. From the cover reveal, to the snippets posted around social media, for me to say that I was bouncing with nervous energy for this book to finally come into my hands is a serious understatement. I literally stopped what I was doing and reading to go back to Sugartown! If I could’ve jumped into my kindle I would have!
More Reviews Here: Readers Live A Thousand Lives
I’m so sad this series has come to an end. I’ve been reading it from the very beginning and knowing there won’t be any more books makes me incredibly sad. Carmen really delivered with this final book and it is probably my favorite of the series and I didn’t think anything would surpass Holly and Jackson for me.
What I loved moved about this book is how it blended fun and feels together perfectly. The book is so much fun and Pepper and Sammy together are a riot. But the book still maintained a serious tone and had a deep storyline. I just loved that balance and I thought Carmen handled it really well. At times it read like a lighthearted fun read, but then at other times my heart was breaking and being ripped from my chest.
Pepper broke my heart. This girl has not had an easy life and she is constantly battling her demons. I wish she could see just how awesome she truly is. But Pepper is a great girl and is a riot. She is unpredictable and fun and I loved her way with words.
Sammy has grown up to be such a wonderful man and I fell in love with him. He is such a great guy and he clearly loves Pepper with everything he has. It was so tough watching him try to keep himself from falling for Pepper once again and keep himself from getting hurt.
As usual, Carmen delivers the sexy times. Pepper and Sammy’s chemistry was off the charts and they were so great together. They were so sweet together but also downright sexy. It was a fantastic mix.
I also loved catching up with some of my favorite characters again. Elijah and Jackson had me cracking up with their overprotective ways and Holly is still freakin awesome. I’m going to miss these characters so damn much.
All in all, Now Leaving Sugartown was the perfect way to wrap up this series. Carmen’s writing continues to get better and better and I can’t wait to see what other books she has in store.
The end of the Sugartown series. So bittersweet! I don’t want to say goodbye to all these characters who I completely adore. From Ana to Elijah, to Holly and Jack, and now Sammy and Pepper, not to mention the secondary characters I’ve grown to love as family, saying I’m sad to see this series end is an understatement.
Carmen Jenner created a magical place known as Sugartown. Tons of angst, laughter and sexy times. I couldn’t wait to dive in to see what Carmen had in store for us in the last book of the series.
We know Sammy as Ana’s little brother from Welcome to Sugartown. That little boy with the lisp who got an ear and eye-full of all that went on with Ana and Elijah. Well damn, he is all grown up now and insanely HOT!!!
“OH. MY. EXPLODING. OVARIES. I think I just came a little.”
YES!! That kind of hot!!
Pepper is Holly and her ex’s daughter and she too has grown up. She is one badass chick and her comebacks were classic! But behind her badassery, she is one broken girl.
She and Sammy grew up together, and as they got older, there was always a special connection. They had a strong friendship and Pepper always wanted something more.
Five years later, Pepper returns to town after running away from the life she always knew. We watch as they reconnect and God, there were so many emotional scenes in this one that I was a mess. Sammy wants to “fix” her, be her rock and make her better.
“Pepper Ryan-Harris-Rowe is a goddess and I’m the devastation she leaves in her wake. I always have been.”
In true Carmen style, there were so many HOT scenes and oh so intense moments. Now Leaving Sugartown was also heartbreaking and parts of the story hurt so bad, I had to take a few reading breaks.
I don’t want to leave Sugartown at all. I will miss this crew like crazy and I can’t thank Carmen enough for creating this series and giving me another family to love!!!
“Life in Sugartown will always be sweet.”
Ain’t that the truth!!
Now Leaving Sugartown is book four in the Sugartown Series by Carmen Jenner but can absolutely be read as a standalone. I read the first book in the series and was good to go skipping the two middle books (which I'll read eventually).
"Pepper Ryan-Harris-Rowe is a goddess and I'm the devestation she leaves in her wake."
Pepper Ryan and Sammy Belle grew up together. Sammy, six years older than Pepper, was always her protector. He picked her up when she was down, cleaned her cuts, and was her best friend. After so many years together, they realized that their friendship had blossomed into something more but it was hard for each of them to come to terms with it due to their familial ties.
"Sam is my vagina's kryptonite. And I suspect that somehow, in some way, he knows this."
Pepper suffers from mental illness. She's always been revered as the crazy girl of Sugartown, mood swings, sarcasm, and a loud mouth always got the better of her. Sammy is her rock, always there to help her when she needs him, until she runs and is out of his life for five years.
I wasn't entirely sure how many stars I wanted to give this book as I was reading it. Granted, there are so many hilarious, laugh out loud scenes, and crazy-hot sex scenes, this book is about Pepper dealing with and overcoming her mental illness and self-harm. It's real and raw. Some scenes were hard to read, and may very well trigger something in someone who is dealing with these types of issues, but that's what I loved about Now Leaving Sugartown. Some of the best books really hit on all emotions and make you truly think about what other people go through in their daily lives and hide from the outside world, and we don't get enough of that in our romance world, I think. Carmen Jenner hit it out of the park with Now Leaving Sugartown and I want my very own Pepper as a best friend, I want to hug her, laugh with her and bitch about boys over coffee with her.
***I recieved a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review!***
This book was funny as hell, and I loved every minute of it. Pepper is crazy hilarious, and always getting into all kinds of ridiculous situations. Her inner dialogue is perfect, and I find myself in love with her character. She is over the top at times, but underneath she has a big heart. I love her brash personality, and that she speaks her mind, and it is very easy to see why she is so in love with Sammy Belle.
Sam is an amazing man who exudes sex like nobody's business. Seriously? Who doesn't love, or lust after, a hot fireman? Especially one who is nice and funny, and would do anything to protect you. Though he has an interesting taste in friends, Jake is absolutely insane, he is everything that you would want in a man.
This book is wonderful, and I loved the chemistry between the two leads. I laughed at their antics, and I was in awe of their relationship. These two clearly belonged together. They have the kind of relationship that we all envy, and can only dream of.
This is my first book by the author, but it certainly won't be the last. She writes a book with a lot of heart, that is incredibly funny, and steamy as hell. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I fully intend to go back and read the rest of this series, so that I can get to know more about the world of Sugartown and its inhabitants. I absolutely recommend this book!
Seeing Sam all grown up is really hot, and his occupation is even hotter. Sam and Pepper bring out some interesting sides in each other especially a horny, flirty Sam, "why don't you take that dainty little hand of yours resting on my thigh and slip it inside my jeans to find out?" Pepper I loved her she was a no nonsense kind of girl, "judging by the enormous hard-on in your pants, I'd say walking is the last thing on your mind right now, and in case it wasn't obvious, it's the last thing on mine. Besides, I'm not sure we can handle this. We are like brother and sister, after all." The banter between these two was fun, naughty and a tad bit perverted at times:
"Can I get rid of my morning wood first?" I say under my breath, not expecting her to hear me.
"Yeah, you should probably take care of that s***. It's distracting."
Some scenes were just hilarious especially the scene before the wedding, "I hold up my hands in a placating gesture. "It wasn't intentional. I promise. I don't just go around d*** slapping women." It wasn't all fun and games with these two while Pepper on the outside seems to have her s*** together, she really doesn't I would read this book with caution and an open mind, there is some heavy subject matter that is discussed in this book.
I liked this one. I haven't read the previous ones, but I had no trouble following the storyline so It can be read as a stand alone. The H and h were oke, but Pepper did get on my nerves a lot of times. I understood her problems, but Sam did his best and he tried so hard to help her, so she came off as ungratefull and selfish a lot of the time. I did like the storyline and the sexytimes but sometimes to me it felt it went a little bit to far. I mean do you have to show your pussy to your boyfriends best friend
(She was wearing a skirt and no underwear and was bending over on purpose..so he and his friend both saw her hoohaa). It wasn't as funny as I thought it was gonna be, but I liked that it was very emotional. Don't know yet if I'm gonna be reading the other ones, since those are about the parents and I think in this book they kind of sucked as parents ( letting a six year older kid take care of your kid because your to busy drinking and shit...) So I don't think I liked them enough to want to read their story. This one was entertaining, sexy and kind of depressing...3,5 stars which I'm rounding up to 4
So it goes like this....
I anxiously open the book on my kindle, scared to start reading because THIS IS THE END!!!!
No more Elijah & Ana, no more Holly & Jack, no more Sammy & Pepper just NO MORE Sugartown and it's crazy sense of home.
I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I cried some more, I laughed some more and then I JUST CRIED...
I had to walk away at times and come back, because it there were just too many emotions going on inside of me that I needed a breather. (plus it meant it took longer for me to get to the end of the story lol) but then I had to go back in because I was craving it, I needed more, wanted more and guess what ladies & gentlemen........Carmen DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
Sugartown is one of my FAVE fictional towns and I'm sad to say goodbye, it really was bittersweet and one that I will always go back to and keep alive. (um hello I did mention Elijah right?)
Carmen well done on a fantastically well written ending to Sugartown.
Wow this book was intense and I loved it. I felt so many emotions with this book. There were moments I was laughing out loud and then I was crying like a baby. But then i was feeling extremely hot....!!!!!!!!
I loved Sammy and I think he turned out exactly the way I was imagining him. God I loved him and I suffered for him.
Pepper was an amazing character also. They made a great couple. All our favorite couples were there but I was glad that the focus was on Sammy and Pepper.
I won a paperback copy and I cannot wait to have it in my hands...!!!!
If I ever win the lottery I'm going to buy a town in Australia and name it Sugartown.. And hold author conventions bi-monthly... And ask that it only be populated with Authors of my choosing. Carmen would be Mayor and Jay Mclean would be Co-Mayor (if there is such a thing) Tijan would be a male recruiter of sorts and Colleen Hoover would be the crazy cat lady.
I have really enjoyed this series. Love the Aussie flavor and the hilarious characters. The varying degrees of crazy, funny and loyalty in each of these people highlighted just how much family is more than biological - really heartwarming actually ❤️
