Not only is this the best introduction to critical news analysis, but also, I think, currently the best introduction to critical discourse analysis. Richardson clarifies Fairclough's apparatus considerably and adds a healthy, politically grounded dimension. The examples are superb, and although one sometimes wonders whether the linguistic aspects dictate interpretation as much as CDA assumes, this book is pure gold.

Dear Dr Richardson, I hope your bus always arrives on time, your tea is always the perfect temperature to drink and your umbrella will never get blown away by the wind. This book has not only been extremely useful for my MA thesis but it was also fun to read, which can be hard to achieve with CDA as a topic (which can get quite dense fairly quickly). Thank you!

Right from the beginning, the thought presented in this peace is based on clearly false assumptions. It's quite discraceful, since CDA is an extremely useful method and by all means should be taken seriously. However, thanks to this author it's completely understandable if someone misunderstands CDA and dismisses it as "Rhetorics of the New Soviet Union"

This book is really helpful for an introduction to critical discourse analysis. Richardson mostly applied Fairclough's model of CDA to analyzing newspaper text. I think this book gives great insight on how CDA can help us better engage with news reports. It also has some interesting case studies (like western media's depiction of Algeria, the Iraq War, etc.) which give you a good outline of how to apply CDA to your own news analysis.

Really good and clear explanation of critical discourse analysis, further explains the ideas of Fairclough as well as applies them onto analysis newspapers. Great for students and beginners within CDA.

As the subtitle is put, it's 'an approach from critical discourse analysis'. The book is very well organized and is filled with plenty of examples.

In the conclusion part of the book, we read:

"The way people speak or write is fundamentally related to the audience they are speaking or writing for."

"When analysing the text-discursive features of newspapers, you should look at texts and think: How could this have been different?" and

"…[A good] analysis [should be] understanding of the often-difficult material conditions in which journalism is produced, sensitive to the intricacies of how texts function and critical of any detrimental effect –ideologically and materially – of contemporary newspaper reporting."

In my opinion, these sentences are worth to be re-read now and then, and should be reflected upon.

A great book to introduce us into newspapers discourse analysis. It has clear and easy to understand language, and presents the topics in a structured and logical way. The explanation is very thorough, consisting of text analysis, discursive practice analysis and social practice analysis. It really sheds light to critical discourse analysis for me.

Some may feel that journalism exists to entertain us –indeed that is simply part of the ‘entertainment industry’.

This book could have (should have?) existed as a longer journal article. Richardson did not need over 200 pages to prove his point.

Excellent clever and critically honest book about journalism's realities. Highly recommended to communication students but also to anyone who want to look under the hood of the press
