In the best-selling tradition of Kids Say the Darndest Things and Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, this warm and funny book offers 147 truly wise parenting tips in the words and handwriting of kids who don't always know how to spell, but always know what they need.
"Believe that I could achieve my goals." -- Ava, Age 11 "Write notes to me on my lunchbox napkin." -- Jenny, age 8 "Hold me when I'm sad." -- Melody, age 9
If kids came with an instruction manual, this would be it -- a clever and poignant collection of suggestions, observations and reminders to parents from the experts themselves (kids 6-12). Organized into three sections: (Love and Caring, Family and Friends, and Guidance and Independence), these one- or two-line requests will bring a smile to your face, a lump to your throat, and a renewed sense of confidence that you can give your kids the love and support they deserve.
Subtitled Instructions on Raising the Perfect Parent, always kiss me good night is a compilation of childrens' instructions to their parents on how to raise them. Salt traveled to fourteen different grade schools and asked the children to write: "If I could tell my parents how to raise me, I'd tell them '________.'" The result is a wise (and touching) collection of sound advice for parents from an atypical source--the children themselves.
Salt's book contains nearly 150 written notes from kids, divided into the categories: caring, guidance & independence, and family & friends. The notes are presented in the childrens' original handwriting, complete with signatures and occasional drawings.
As a sampling of what kids would tell their parents about childrearing, the book includes:
"Don't screem at me becaus I am small and I am not perfect." --Jessica
"whenever I am in need, spend all the time you can with me." --Leonard, age 8
"encorrige me to work on things that I am not the best at." --Laila, Age:10
"Teach me to make good and smart judgments." --Matt, 10
"Talk to me about your day." --Alison, 10
"Don't spoil me and then later on yell at me for being spoiled." --Ariel 9 yrs old
This book is wonderful and heart-warming. It's understandable that these children can express what needs improving and even more amazing at how often they seem to get it right.
well, I was astonished to find only one sentence in each page of the book, I have expected some details. But it was just enough. To read the children's needs and priorities in its simple and innocent form was just enough for an average parent to understand the true essence of the child's spirit. IT IS ALL ABOUT LOVE AND HOW TO SHOW IT.
A poignant collection of suggestions, observations and reminders to parents and adults in general. This little book left me with a lump in my throat, reminding me that childrens' needs are really very simple.
A short read of advice on how to be a good parent, from 8-12 year old perspective. Full of good reminders. "let me jump on my bed." "trust me". "let me get muddy".
