Vampire Guardians #1

A Vampire's Garden of Stones

Rate this book
He was pretty sure that if he said “Boo” she’d jump from the car regardless of how fast he was going. He offered up a slight smile. He couldn’t blame her really, he was aware that he could be a tad… intimidating, perhaps even overbearing at times. Okay, that was just bullshit he was intimidating most all of the time. He couldn’t help it really, it came with the territory. It was hard not to be threatening when you were a Guardian or more officially if you preferred to throw down titles which he didn’t – Vampire Guardian Assassin. He did kill people for a living. Granted they were evil, but he threw badass attitude around on a nightly basis because that’s what assholes he exterminated understood. He looked over at Jamie, so small and fragile, her injured hand lying in her lap, the other tucked up close to the door latch. As if...

Jamie felt relief when he pulled the Jaguar up beside her house and killed the engine. She fumbled at the door until the mysterious tall dark and oh so handsome vampire slowly leaned his bulk across her and opened it for her. “Thanks,” she said softly, feeling suddenly warm all over at his sudden nearness and like an idiot because she couldn’t open the door herself. “I’ve never been in such a fancy car before.” He enjoyed the flush he’d brought so easily to her cheeks. “You’re welcome.” Oh my gawd he has a voice to die for. It was all she could do to not look over her shoulder like a teenager with a crush to make sure he was following her. You don’t know how right you may be little girl.

I just can't get past Chapter 7. Even those few chapters were difficult to read! Jaimie is hard to connect and feel sorry for- she's so whiny and says "gawd" WAY too much! Seriously. I cannot read her saying it one more time. And Aerik, can't really connect with him either. The author's way of writing their internal dialogue makes my head spin. First off, just way too much irrelevant information in the dialogue, in my opinion. Way too many thoughts broken up. The author really could have used a better editor for that alone. Some sentences just didn't make sense, grammatically or otherwise. I saw the high review rating and thought I'd give it a shot. Turns out I can't even stomach finishing it. The plot had promise, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

Very enjoyable ......but......

This book should have 5 stars....as individuals we all have certain quirks that bother us, or should I simply say..."Pet Peeves" ? ...yeah, I have a few...the heroine was enjoyable, likeable even ((UNTIL SHE SAID GAWD, or more specifically (oh my gawd)... it detracted from the story for me)) I do look forward to the next installment but by GAWD I am sure hoping the author refrains from making her heroine look like a simpleton....i knowwwww that sounds hateful, but other than that one peeve, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, her take on vampires was new for me & exciting as it's a series & for avid readers....that's huge! Take what you can from this review, mind you like I said these are my very own pet peeves, the story is great!!!

Fangatic for this!

In need of a good paranormal read I came across this with some recommendations in Amazon. And I'm so glad I bought it! This had everything I needed to calm my paranormal urge. Aerik was super sexy and such an Alpha male. While Jamie was a smart-mouthed, a bit loopy, strong willed woman. The combo of them together had me laughing and flipping thru the pages. Aerik I'd a Guardian who takes out bad guys. While Jamie is an artist who has been touched too many times by death leaving her alone and heartbroken. On a desperate cry they are connected. But danger lurks nearby with a well-known face and a past history that connects them to Jamie. But a unknown connection brings two lonely souls together sparking fireworks. I loved this book and I am definitely going to read Zaks story next!!

An enjoyable find, was this updated story. Two feisty main characters, likeable and humorous with a nice little suspense-mystery built in.

Great secondary characters (Must-Read-'Dare'!), both vampiric and human (would like to see what happens to the cops, and while some nice romantic/sexy interludes occurred, there was nothing I'd call explicit, and that is quite the departure for my reading these days. And a nice one because, in this case, the story was self-sustaining and the behaviour of the characters was as internally descriptive as the written word would have been.

I liked it. A lot. And I will go in and see if the others in the series have been updated from 2004 (ish) as well...

I liked it.

It was likable. Had a good plot, but tended to drag on. I liked the characters, they had dangerous down to a fine art. Actually they had humor. Jamie is just gifted, suffered a lot of losses of her family. I enjoyed the book.

Well what can I say.... by the reviews I thought this book had promise, but I read about 19% and I just couldn't read it anymore, the different POV's without breaks in between or showing who was saying what got so confusing I had to re read some paragraphs just to be certain I knew who was talking/thinking.

There is so many things I could say about this book even though I didn't even get 1/4 way through but here goes

- Jamie: not entirely sure what age she is but if she is in her 20's she sound supremely immature she has the thought patterns of a 16 year old, also the first time from her point of view she was in her family's grave yard why ? Who died and how and what was her relation to them, I could have miss read or accidentally missed a paragraph but oh well.... see confusing. And out of this first 19% she has just talked/though about random shit or Aerik ohhh how his voice sounds how good he looks.... talk about YA trying to come across as NA

- Aerik: well first page was his POV and can't tell you I liked it he is sooo very arrogant about how good he is, then it just goes down hill from there, I mean all he thinks about is bedding her and killing her and not wanting to 'mind rape her' and then he bites her anyway without her knowing I mean gah! Not a good start to the book,

-Lastly the writing style, I have read a lot of different styles and points of views, 1st person, 3rd person mixture of both, but this was just so confusing I couldn't wrap my mind around it and all the thinks and talking out loud was getting ridiculous.

I think the author had a good concept but the world building and story line was just not up to my standard to YA for my liking

I searched for months upon months to find and read this book and I've got to say I was disappointed. I guess I built it up in my head over the time while looking for it and it didn't live up to in my head.
The relationship in the beginning of the story was EXTREMELY one sided and giving off a "rapey" vibe, for a lack of a better word. Aerik is manipulative and controlling (and not in the sexy way *wiggles eyebrows*). He actually fondled, drank from and had his way with her then erased her memories so that he could have a "fresh start" 😠 like for real Aerik that's just wrong.
He even forces his will on to Jamie using his 'abilities', like who does that? And he didnt even do it, once or twice; nope, we're talking multiple times throughout the book. At one point I was wondering "is this a relationship or a puppet show?".
It's been a while since I finished this book. I cant remember what else needs to be discussed but I know there is more.

I just couldn't get into it

I really had a hard times getting into the story so much so that after I read 32% I started skipping sections, looking for some action or something to grab me . I am sorry to say that nothing grabbed me, and I really wanted this to be a great series to capture me. I couldn't stand how "of my gawd" was used, overused so much. They lying did get to me but the beginning just seems way unbelievable and I've read a lot of vamp books . I have to agree with a lot of others reviews.

The story is intriguing, a lot and it hurts me that I won't find out how it ends and what exactly the book is about. However, I'm at 31% and even though I 'm so curious, I just can't get into it, I'm not bought in. It irritates me hoe Aerik thinks of Jamie. It also irritates me that she is so unspecial...well at least until now. They are so uneven and it irks me. So, a very personal opinion here :)!
I woul still recommend it because as I said, it makes you want for more if you can get over the imbalance.

Aerik & Jamie

This is my first book by this author, and the first book in the series. While I felt the storyline had huge potential and was carried out pretty well; the book seemed to drag on a bit for me. I liked Aerik’s character, but would have preferred if instead of telling himself that it was wrong to lie to Jamie he actually stopped lying to her. At first I figured he was going to only lie in the beginning and ease her into the truth, but when he was still lying at the end of the book, it made me want to tell Jamie to run far far away.

I loved this book, I loved the stream of consciousness writing style from each character. I even liked the way she said gawd. I loved Jamie's little idiosyncrasies and the mystery and intrigue behind the family and the deaths. I loved the murder plot twist, I even loved how Dare has cultivated a relationship with her. The sex was steamy, with just enough blood lust for me, I understand that many may not feel that way. This book is absolutely a love it or hate it type of book.

A very interesting take on the vampire genre.

I wouldn't have picked this book out as my first choice, however I was pleasantly surprised by the story that unfolded as I continued to read. Most books in this genre lack so much content it's unreal. But this had so much story, so much to go along with the love and vampire addiction I seem to have developed. LOL love this book and can't wait to read Zaks story!!

Way to go, Jody, your story was good and interesting.

I gave this book five stars, it deserved six, I almost didn't read it, I thought, another typical, boring vampire finds mate story. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the story, characters were believable and funny. Can't wait to read next installment.

Must read!!!

This has got to be the best vampire read since Twilight. Huge fan of good stories about vampires...the storyline was actually believable, the characters were well written and well thought out. I can't wait to read the next book. Honestly the best book I have read in weeks.

Jamie did not realize her deep and binding grief would lure a huge beastly hunk of a man. He is a man that will not easily die. He becomes entranced by this waif of a lass. She has suffered much loss. He can help her; he wants her...

I wish I were a witch and could curse the day Amazon started with those one-click purchases. I accidentally clicked on this book and spent 1.20 Dollars on this nonsense. This book was an insult to all the readers and no one should pay for it. No one!
Honestly, can just anyone write a book and sell it right to an online e-book shop and skip the whole proofreading process these days? I know that the proofreaders don't usually correct grammar but someone should see it before it reaches the reader who pays for it.
Plot-wise the book wasn't so bad. You have this vampire who has waited centuries to find his destined mate and once she is almost at his grasp she keeps getting into deadly situations where it's mere seconds before she is lost forever. The vampire is manipulative - he can erase memory and command. He also lies a lot. Which makes him very poor boyfriend material and it doesn't go well with happily-ever-after theme because once these lies become clear his eternity will tumble like a house made of cards - now that's something I'd be more interested in reading.
But unfortunately even if the plot wasn't half bad there's the author's writing skill. Or the lack of it. I wanted to google how old this person is because I don't want to judge without perspective. It'd be good for a first attempt at a book by a fifteen-year-old but a very poor thing for someone who should know better. Needless to say I didn't find the info so I'm guessing this was written by an adult.
At the beginning I kept overlooking the punctuation mistakes (like missing quotation marks) but then serious mistakes like (to instead of too) started popping up. That got me uneasy. A non-native speaker of English should not be able to detect such things, right? I mean, I effin' learn from reading! I don't wanna learn a mistake by accident! It's your mother tongue for Christ's sake! Get a grip you lousy author! Anyway, needles to say I became a hater of this and the last straw was the classic mistake - you're vs. your - which is probably only made by half-witted idiots. Because not even the kids I teach (who speak English for only a couple of years) make it.
But that's not all. The heroine acts very immature and her inner monologues are cringe-worthy (too much GAWD in there) and unfortunately her male counterpart picks up the slang so that later you can't tell the difference between the language of a stupid 20-something-year-old and a centuries old vampire who otherwise "slips" into chivalrous behaviour. Why, oh why?
I. WANT. MY. MONEY. BACK. Really, I'm so outraged that I'm gonna give it just one vampire kiss in the rating - that hardly ever happens.

This book was another Vampire love story. I found a book review of this book on a blog I came across. I then went to the author's page to see what the book was all about and Jody Offen had free copies of all 4 books in the series on her blog. The series is The Watchers series. I couldn't turn down the free books so I immediately started reading. I have to say this book being free was great , that being said it had an awkward start. The way the characters met and connected didn't feel right and was a little over the top. Once you got into the story it was quite good but I still feel the author could add more descriptions to places, people in things in the book, so that you can see what it might look like in your head as you are reading. I always love the books I can see in my head the best and stick to reading those authors and as I said I could not do this with this book. The author hints that Aerik is extremely large and muscular. I think his height was 6' 4" but i don't think she ever described his hair color, style, what he was wearing . Are these vampires pale? The description of Jamie at the beginning was almost non existent but near the very end there was a much better description of her hair and eyes. Unfortunately you had to read the entire book not knowing what she looked like. This pattern continued throughout the book with every character. I know this book was free so I'm not complaining. I'm just hoping the author does another rewrite and improves the quality of this book because it truly can become a fantastic book . I enjoy the vampire books that really take advantage of vampires gifts, and powers. This book had some new powers that I had not previously read and then some that she revamped such as mind reading. I know mind reading is in a lot of vampire books but I like what Jody Offen did with that gift in this book. It was truly worth the read and will cost you nothing to read it.

Bloody hell... If I hear or read "Gawd", "Oh my Gawd" or any derivative of Gawd again... I will find a spork and do bodily harm to the poor idiot saying it... Couple of times .... FINE.... But this author used it on pretty much EVERY. FUCKING. PAGE. Can we say annoying as SHIT?????

Aerik was meh for me... Don't get me wrong, I love a good alpha male... But he LIED CONSTANTLY to Jamie, fucked around with her memories including erasing a dry hump session because he couldn't get himself under control.

And then you have Jamie. The constant blathering idiot of a girl... Honestly, how did you survive into adulthood? Jackass of an ex keeps acting possessive and you think there's something hinky going on... Let's NOT call the cops... No let me try to get a confession out of him first... BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T SEE THAT SHIT COMING FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY OR ANYTHING.

I liked that Zak is a smart ass and I adore his sense of humor but I read the "preview" in the back of this one and as soon as I saw the devil word of "Gawd" I shut my poor Kindle off and said FUCK THIS SHIT!!! Not reading the next ones... In order to prevent the need for a lobotomy.

Endless useless facts, information dumps, internal dialogue out the wazoo... Just no. Get an editor that can weed through that shit and try again.

Aerik walks into Jamie’s life at a time when she’s hearing voices. His voice to be exact but why him and why now?

This book had a lot of potential unfortunately there were just a few elements that didn’t sit right with me. Things were mentioned or introduced but then not explored, such as Aerik being previously married. Considering the next book moves on to another couple I have to assume that this will not be addressed. Neither will a rather important aspect of Jamie’s heritage. (I can’t really tell you what that is without spoiling it for you). Then there’s the fact that Aerik doesn’t seem to learn from his mistakes. I have no issue with a take charge, Alpha male but when he’s constantly lying and taking away his female’s free will, he becomes a tad overbearing. I dislike that side of Aerik immensely. It really is a shame, because if there was a little more character development and the plot holes were all sown up, ‘A Vampire's Garden of Stones’ would be a fantastic book.
