Lo voy a dejar e un 3, por momentos se me hizo pesado para mi gusto demasiadas descripciones y comederos de cabeza de la protagonista. El estilo viejuno me gustó y se nota en la forma de narrar y tratar las cosas.

2/5 Le doy 2, que me parece mucho porque al final me he divertido mucho leyendo sus sublimes y rimbombantes descripciones de los encuentros amorosos, jajaajaj, he caído en "éxtasis".
Se me ha hecho muy, muy pesado y el argumento no me ha enganchado para nada, ni el romance, ni la supuesta intriga que tiene. Ella es insoportable perdida.
En resumidas cuentas creo que he elegido muy mal el libro este mes, aunque me he reído mucho.

Great period detail, historic events and writing
I listened to this kindle/audio combo via KU.
The narrator used a whiney voice for the heroine combined with a southern drawl was hard to take.
As usual, Jennifer Blake’s period detail of real historical events and the time period are impeccable. In addition, her writing, I’ve come to realize, never disappoints

“Yes, Elene, I do love you.” Ryan held her gaze, his own seething, darkly blue. “I have loved you since I first saw you standing gilded by moonlight in a dark wood, since I held you in my arms through three days of living entombment. The smell and taste and feel of you enchants my heart and is engraved on my bones, and will follow me into the purgatory I will surely find because I put you above all else.
—Avery lovely “declaration” passage that shows off the author’s writing and conveys emotion and the power of love.
However, I was sick of the heroine, who fled Saint Domingue (Haiti) with the clothes on her back and one possession—Her enslaved maid who was , endlessly whining about wanting to “make her own way” when she had no skills or capital to actually “do” anything to earn a respectable living.
This was very nearly a 2-Star Read bec aside from sex, I wasn’t feeling Ryan and Elena. However, as usual, Ms Blake’s period detail, writing and a very satisfying declaration of love in the last pages raised the rating to 3-stars.

The story begins on the island of Saint-Domingue during the revolt of the slaves against the French (this really happened). Elene Larpent and her servant are lucky to escape the attack on her father's plantation and are rescued by notorious privateer Captain Ryan Bayard. He'll get them off the island when his ship returns, but that's a few days away and our H and h have to hide in a secret something or other under someone's kitchen (too hard to explain).
So the perfume twist is that Elene's maid concocted some super special just-for-her perfume with a whiff of voodoo lingering around it - no man can resist her when she wears it. So...all those days with those two stuck together and that perfume works like a charm, and it keeps working after they get out. And therein lies the rub for Elena - is it the perfume that keeps Ryan sticking to her like glue, or is it true love after all?
Once our pair escapes the island, their adventures take them to New Orleans. I won't reveal much, but there's a few mysterious illnesses (and deaths!) that are tied into the perfume. Or are other nefarious evil doers at work here?
Read it for yourself. I did like this, and it's one I would read again in a few years. As always with Blake's novels, she does a great job of giving the reader a good sense of time and place, plus including a few lesser known bits of history.

Но втората част беше малко излишна - цялата драма беше в главата на героинята, която за малко да прецака всички около себе си заради суеверията и претенциите си, представени като “независимост” и “собствено мнение”, а са си чиста проба глупост. Но този подход е типичен за доста дамски романи с “независими” героини. Все пак приключението и мелодрамата са гарантирани, макар и гарнирани с някои излишни описания.

3.5 Stars. Feb. is Pirate and Privateer month on Regan W. romance review blog. This was a good book but not a page turner for me. Not a whole lot of pirating either, but there is a ship voyage over to LA and the H is a privateer. To be fair the book did pickup during the last 120 pgs or so and became more interesting once the poisonings started to come to the forefront. However, I was able to guess the culprit. I liked both the hero/ heroine and I would have liked to have had a little more about the H. Most was her comings & goings, thoughts, and the perfume, which is a different plot device. JB included some good history about the Louisiana Purchase and the city of New Orleans. I liked the secondary characters too. I doubt I’ll read it again.

4 and ½ Stars! Exciting Adventure with a Privateer Hero to Love!
Well-written and well-researched, this is a story set in 1803 beginning on the island of Sanit-Dominque in the Caribbean (today modern Haiti) in the time of violent slave uprisings. Elene Larpent returns from school in France to find her papa has betrothed her to Durant Gambier, a man she thinks is harsh. Worried about whether he’ll be kind and gentle, her maid comes to her with a solution…a perfume that will enthrall any man and keep him her slave.
Before Elene can be wed, the island’s slaves attack and she and her maid flee into the sugar cane field where she is rescued by the privateer Ryan Bayard.
To escape the violence, a mulatto friend of Ryan’s hides them in a pit under his dining room…only 4’ x 7’…for 3 days—and of course, Elene’s perfume drives Ryan wild. You can guess the result. Since she has lost everything, when they escape the island, Ryan persuades her to come with him to New Orleans where much is happening in the change of countries ruling Louisiana. Ryan asks Elene to marry him, but she thinks it’s only due to the perfume and refuses—but is it?
Blake sets her story in a time of great upheaval in the island and in Louisiana and did the hard research to make the background and historic details authentic as indicated in her “Author’s Note” at the end. The descriptions are rich, the dialog clever and there are some wonderful characters. There is also a mystery as people keep dying of arsenic poisoning and Elene is determined to find the culprit.

"Perfume of Paradise" by Jennifer Blake is a singularly enthralling experience, making the likes of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Pride and Prejudice" pale in comparison. With a swashbuckling, statuesque male lead, a golden haired, starry-eyed heroine and abundant drama to thicken the plot, you won't be able to put this masterpiece down. If you think that one romantic trope makes a story exciting, imagine having them all! A true magnum opus and future classic that will be discussed and examined in literary circles for its outstanding use of the English language.

This book was highly recommended on book review website. I am not sure why except perhaps the reader became intoxicated with some mysterious perfume that the author doused the pages with. This book was just not in my taste. It reminds me of the Zebra Historicals that I started out reading with the havey cavey ship captains and the ladies who really just wanted to be wenches. I have to admit that I never made it through the entire book. I did skim read to the end and was not anymore impressed.

Qualche anno fa, su una bancarella di libri usati nel mercato del paese, ho trovato questo libro, IL PROFUMO DEL PARADISO, e non ho saputo resistere alla tentazione, dopo aver letto la trama, essendo cresciuta a pane e CORAZON SALVAJE. I Caraibi ottocenteschi hanno sempre esercitato un certo fascino su di me e, anche se non ci troviamo in Martinica, Santo Domingo in qualche modo mi era piuttosto familiare.
Siamo in un epoca post rivoluzionaria, nel pieno dell'ascesa di Napoleone Bonaparte, che ancora non si è proclamato Imperatore e che divide il suo pubblico tra sostenitori e denigratori. Santo Domingo è una colonia francese, che cambia identità e bandiera molto rapidamente.
Elene, la protagonista, sta per andare in sposa a un uomo che non ama solo per assecondare gli interessi economici della famiglia. Durant è in realtà un uomo fascinoso, ma prepotente che è intenzionato ad avere una sposa fedele e devota, ma allo stesso tempo non vuole rinunciare alle sue conquiste tra le schiave.
Siamo in piena schiavitù, ristabilita dopo una breve abolizione nei vari passaggi di potere.
La stessa governante di Elena, Devota, è in realtà sua zia, sorellastra di sangue misto della sua stessa madre.
La preparazione del matrimonio e la successiva rivolta sono descritte benissimo, come tutta la dimensione storica del romanzo. Il matrimonio con Durant viene interrotto da una rivolta di schiavi. Elene fugge assieme alla fedele schiava che le regala un magico profumo che le servirà a incantare tutti gli uomini che incontrerà sul suo cammino. Durante la fuga le due donne vengono assalite dai rivoltosi e poi salvate miracolosamente da Rayan Bayard, un affascinante corsaro.
Ryan, il protagonista, e la successiva prigionia nella botola sotto il pavimento del contrabbandiere sono ben sostenuti ed interessanti. I due cedono alla passione in questi giorni di reclusione forzata, ma mantengono il loro carattere e le loro divergenze durante tutto il tempo.
Lei è un convinta sostenitrice della bandiera e non riesce proprio a capire il concetto di onore di Ryan che sente di essere legato solo alla sua famiglia, ai suoi amici, disconoscendo concetti quali patria e stato, anche perché la Louisiana, dove vive, viene continuamente venduta da un paese ad un altro. Adesso è spagnola, ma prima era francese. Lui è fedele solo a se stesso e ai suoi interessi.
La trama solida ed è ben sviluppata, anche se mi ha lasciato la sensazione che ci fossero dei vuoti dovuti forse a tagli apportati dagli editori italiani.
Certo la storia è appassionante, non solo per le vicende politiche che finiscono per travolgere la vita dei singoli, ma per la storia dei due protagonisti, sempre più legati in modo quasi ossessivo, per quel misterioso profumo che si mormora abbia poteri magici, ma che è in realtà solo un'essenza che dà sicurezza a livello psicologico, per i personaggi per tratteggiati (persino Durant possiede un certo fascino), e per il sottofondo della storia dei veleni. Fino alla fine ero in bilico e non riuscivo a capire chi potesse essere l'assassino, ma alla fine tutta la spiegazione ha una certa coerenza. Nel complesso è un libro interessante.

me parece que es un libro muy bueno, que cumple las expectativas. Es romántico, pero no empalagoso y es misterioso. La trama es muy buena y los contextos históricos están excelentes. Es una obra antigua así que el vocabulario es muy coloquial, pero es entendible.
Les encantara a todos los fanáticos de los clásicos y del romance. Dan ganas de seguir leyendo a esta autora.

Across the waters she sails with her maid and a handful of survivors to the great state of Louisiana. Wanting to make her own way, Elena and her maid make a batch of her special wedding perfume. A huge success, people are willing to go to great extremes just to get their hands on a bottle.
Her friends, who at one time, had a bottle of perfume, start dying around her. This is a story filled with intrigue, romance, and grit. What Elena lacks in personal self confidence, she more than makes up with it in determination.
An all round good romantic story that says....women can have it all when they listen to and believes in what the heart is saying.

This story is a perfect example of what happens when a man and a women fall in love but fail to communicate that they have done so to each other. Their actions with each other and their reactions to each other are a dead giveaway to everyone else but themselves.
Life and loving gets very hot and interesting starting with a slave revolt during a wedding so that the vows cannot be completed. Then Elene's escape, a magic potion, meeting up with the hero, Ryan and the excitement mounts and mounts until the very end of this book. There is also quite a bit of sleuthing that Elene's does when she tries to solve a mystery involving deaths by arsenic poisoning.
I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading or listening to more in this series.

loved it....a beautiful love story that I highly recommend. editing errors abound, but easily overlooked as the story progresses. The question if honor us consistenly considered and judged throughout. i was greatly touched by the story. an endless journey of revenge, greed, love, insanity, friendship, loyalty and commitment. A must read.

Overall I loved this book, maybe in the second part something was missing but I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to read more books of Jennifer but in polish, of course I can in english but in home/native language is definitely easier to read and feel the book! So petition to polish translation more of the Jennifer's Blake books! Thanks in advance.

Trapped on an Island that has been taken over by angry slaves. Elene barely escapes and go to New Orleans where she lives with the Captain that saved her. She decides to make perfume with her maid who is into Voodoo. The endings are always good in her books.

This book started off so promising but I really struggled to finish it. I think sometimes Jennifer Blake is too wordy. I love the historical information but it just felt like it was drawn out.
