Catching up…
Izzie Silver leaves Ireland for New York. But it doesn’t seem like this move leads her to happiness. On the other side of the ocean, Izzie’s aunt Anneliese discovers her own relationship pain. Then Lily, the wise and compassionate family matriarch, is taken ill.
So, back to Ireland Izzie goes to be with her.
And…
Soon she discovers a past that her grandmother never spoke about.
What is happening with these 3 women? Lessons learned – both past and present – bring joy and heartache.

When I read a book I want to connect with the main character. In this particular novel, however, I had a difficult time creating that connection with the character of Izzie. I can't quite put my finger on why this was the case. Maybe it was because I never really felt like I knew what made her tick.
Anneliese and Lily are another story. I felt Anneliese's heartbreak and feelings of betrayal when she found that her husband, Edward, and her best friend, Nell were having an affair. As a reader I understood the numbness she felt as she walked into the ice cold ocean and only began to come back to herself once she was under the water. In the character of Lily I could relate to the trap she felt by her social status. In a world where money and status were everything, she had to find herself. She had to find herself when she fell in love with a man who was outside of her world and when she had to learn to live without him.
After having read Lessons in Heartbreak I would have to say that in the conclusion of all three character's stories, I felt as though Anneliese and Lily grew into their own through their experiences. With Izzie I still felt a lot of unrest and dissatisfaction.
I definitely liked parts of this book, but as a whole it just didn't seem to catch me.

When I picked up Cathy Kelly, I was in a reading slump and was so looking forward to an easy chic-lit story. However, of all her books that I have read, this stands out to be the most serious of them all. Though the title is misleading, she addresses very pertinent issues. From love, heartaches, heartbreaks, divorce, adultery, marriage, depression, suicide , family wrangles, death and the world war, yes, world war.
I could have easily rated it a 4* but felt she squeezed too many themes in one book. The storyline was all over the place and It was very difficult at first to catch up with all the characters. This is so unlike Cathy.

Izzie Silver works in the fast paced world of fashion and models in NYC where she has been successful but her heart remains in Ireland where her family lives in a lovely seaside village. Izzie's granny, Lily, had to be both her mother and grandmother after Izzie's mother died of cancer. Her Aunt Anneliese has also played a powerful part in her life as she provided support while Izzie and her daughter, Beth grew up together.
Izzie returns to Ireland when her granny has a stroke and is hospitalized. She finds that there is more going on than just her granny being sick. She notices that her Aunt Anneliese is not the same but she doesn't know what it is. Izzie had recently become involved with a wonderful man in NYC that she fiound she loved and she is torn between being in Ireland with her grandmother and being back in NYC with the man she loves.
The descriptive writing makes you feel a part of the Irish village, feel the horrors of war, and understand the pressures on the lives of fashion models. The characters are strong women that you would love to have as friends. Their emotions are real and the story mimics life and is not just a happily ever after story. Cathy Kelly is a winner!

I’ve had this one on my TBR read for a while and finally got it. I’m not really sure how I felt about this book tho, it was good don’t get me wrong, I think I just felt like it would be more than what it was. I think I wanted more heartbreak in it, I mean the girl experienced her heartbreak but I don’t know I just think it needed more action to it!

I liked it but I didn't love it. I lost track of some of the characters and feel like Cathy could have actually made a couple of books out of this rather than trying to squeeze all these characters and stories into one.

This was the first Cathy Kelly book I've read and I really enjoyed it will definitely be picking her novels up in future. Chic lit is such a wide genre now that some stories are repetitive same old same old but this was definitely different. Set in 3 countries across two different eras and with the focus of the story being on several different women and their perspective on dealing with adultery it really gave different sides to the the time old story.
Lilly is old in her 90s and looking back on life after Jodi a young Australian woman comes to live in her village and decides to dig up a story on the old manor house in the village she asks Lilly for her help with the story but Lilly has a stroke before she can tell what she knows. Lilly's mind however continues to reminisce about the time she worked as a nurse in London during the war and despite her strict catholic upbringing found herself having an affair with a married man.
Izzie is Lilly's granddaughter whom she bright up after the death of Izzie's mum Izzie has moved to New York where she is currently having an affair with a married man whom she believed to be on the edge of divorce she is also trying to set up her own business for models of normal size and shape upon hearing the news of her grandmothers stroke she must return to Ireland and face up to her own actions after seeing the way adultery affects others.
Annelise is Lilly's daughter in law, wrapped up in her own depression she doesn't realise her husband has been carrying on with her best friend until it is too late and he has left her for said friend. Annelise is devastated by the affects adultery has on her and her family and tries to kill herself only to be rescued and saved in more than one way.
Love, heartbreak, family and history what more can you want from a truly decent and rarely seen chic lit novel? Ms Kelly is a master of her art.

I started reading this book having in mind Cathie Kelly’s usual light, optimistic, happy-end style. Maybe the title should give me a first hint or maybe if I had read the book description I would see this coming: this book is really about heartbreak. But not the my-boyfriend-cheated-on-me-but-I-found-a-better-one-that-really-loves-me kind of heartbreak that I expected, but real painful heartbreak of losing the one you love and learning to let go. And while what I was looking for was a book that will lift my mood, I was left heartbroken when it ended. Having said that, the Cathie Kelly’s optimistic breeze was not missing from the book.
There were always social aspects touched in Cathie Kelly’s books, but it was interesting to read a more serious one than her classic optimistic/happy approach. This definitely wasn’t what I signed up for when I started reading the book, but I have to admit that I did like the plot, the characters and the fact that the different stories are taking place in different time periods made the book more interesting, at least for me.
Concluding, I was posititively surprised to find out that touching more serious subjects does fit Cathie Kelly a lot; although, I would expect that the target audience for this book is probably not the same with the rest of her books, so a portion of the readers might end up disappointed.

Three lives. Three loves. Three reasons to let go. This books talks about betrayal, sacrifice, war impacts, & lots of more facts in life. There were moments that I like to cry because of strong impressions caused by life game. Love and pure affection can be so joyous & agonising. I also learnt something new about death: some people do not go gently, they really do fight. It is said 'do not go gentle into that good night'. I suggest that you read this book & refresh your thoughts regarding decision making reflection.

my first Cathy Kelly - her previous covers have been enough to put me off but this one was OK. Enjoyed reading it to the end. Liked how the strands all ran together.

This was a nice pleasant book. I think I was hoping for more from it.
Some great characters but it did drag a bit too much for me.
Unfortunately I had to use my Kindle dictionary more than I'm comfortable doing for words like "nautch" "cosh" "heliotrope" "sinuous" etc etc etc
I dislike the constant use of 'mental notes' - gets very repetitive.
So just 3 stars for this book. I've read other books by Cathy Kelly which I've preferred

Only recently I discovered the writing of Cathy Kelly. I enjoyed this book very much - Cathy Kelly might be a best-selling author but she is also an excellent writer. Although the three women who suffer heartbreak of various kinds during the course of this novel, and I admit to shedding a tear or two for them, I was left with a sense of hope by the end of the book. I look forward to reading more novels by this writer.

Mediocre read to be honest. So much potential but the whole thing felt disorganised and rushed with no real depth to any storyline. I was going to give 2 stars but the book did have some redeeming qualities which you might find if you chance to read.

Now, if you are in the mood for reading about the approaching death of a much loved granny and her 1940's love affair that could not be, an Irish lass in NYC in love with a married man which also is not to be,AND the breakup of a thirty some year marriage, (this character wrote the book on depression), this is the book for you. I gave Kelly two stars for readability, but the rest is sheer agony.

This was quite good, about 3 women from different generations dealing with impossible love affairs. While the ending felt incomplete, I quite liked that for once it wasn't all neatly wrapped up for everyone.

Yes, it's a chicklit, but I feel it's a very good one. I liked the three different lives Cathy Kelly takes you into and I loved the way she describes the struggle of three different kinds of letting go.
The characters come to life and I felt touched by their thoughts and feelings.

I came across this book at my local library years ago when they were giving out free books for keeping. I held onto this book for AT LEAST 7 years before reading it. Why it took me so long? I have no answers for ya. It could be the fact it was tucked away hidden and forgotten, though I feel it in my bones I was meant to read this story now. There were a lot of signs and messages given that I needed to hear and the younger, twenty-something-year-old me would not be ready for the message at hand.
Though I struggled to really connect with Izzie and her character, I did connect with the rest of the ladies, especially Lily. I cried. There were emotions and so for that, I give it 5 🌟

The historical bits with Lily's backstory were the best parts. But overall, I just found the book too long, and not quite gripping enough.
Annaliese's story was the next most interesting bit, but I felt her story was a bit underdeveloped. Especially since she was the one of the three who was actually the victim of infidelity.
Izzie was the main character but I found her story least compelling of all. I never got Joe's appeal nor why she kept coming back to him.

These women are from different decades & live very differnt lives, in different parts of the world but are tied through kinship - grandmother, aunt, & granddaughter. Learning lessons from the past can help them let go & move forward into their future.

sometimes even letting go is hardest of all and you cannot live them as well. what to do in this kind on situation ? when you love with all your heart but dont have it back, it shatters your heart and you cannot say to anyone.
its good to see izzie understood but what lily has gone through is not worse what izzie faced.
no matter how many times i read this book, it makes me sad to see why only the person who loves suffer ? why not the other person gets courage and stand too ? i dont get it at all.

Izzie, living in New York, away from her Irish roots, finds her morals and ethics are tested when she falls for the wrong man. Her Aunt Annalise' trust is broken by her husband and best friend and can't enunciate that she is hurting. Lily, Izzie's Grandmother, feels the past every day and when Jodie, a new resident of Tamarin, asks for her help in documenting some local history is willing to help until disaster strikes.
A lovely read.

This was a lovely book, in the "Irish fiction" genre. Thirty something Izzie Silver is living in New York, but she's not really happy. She rushes home to be with her grandmother, Lily, who raised her, after Lily had a stroke. And her aunt Annaleise's life has been turned upside down when her husband of over 25 years has left her. The three women strive to find happiness and must turn to the past to do so. I really enjoyed this book

Better than average storyline centred around infidelity with views from both sides including the heartache caused and some of the reasons why. There was also a side story of the grandmother Lily and her adventures in heartbreak in the war while she is nursing in London, it becomes a secret that the family learn later. A really touching ending wraps it all up.

I love these kinds of book that take you on an adventure into the past. There is mystery, lost love, forsaken love, tense familial relationships and life lessons. Great characters and I love the setting. Definitely a book you start and want to read all at once.
