Cassie Pengear Mysteries #3

Stabbing Set with Sapphires

Rate this book
Cassie Pengear thought a job typing up inventory lists at a jewelry store would be fun. Until there was a kidnapping. And then a robbery. And then a murder. Now Cassie must figure out the connection between the events and hope it will lead her to the missing girl. In a Victorian England that almost existed, a steampunk London where tinkerers and clockwork devices exist alongside handsome cabs and corsets, murder is still solved by traditional observation and intuition. This is the London where American typist Cassandra Pengear finds herself stumbling over corpses and helping Scotland Yard detectives solve murders (although they inexplicably prefer to call it interfering). Follow her adventures in the Cassie Pengear Mystery series, beginning with The Killing at the Carnival.

Stabbing Set with Sapphires (Cassie Pengear Mysteries Book 3) — L.A. Nisula (22 chapters) Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2022

In Cassie’s third full length novel, she tells the reader that generally she prefers working alone but for some cases, she will work onsite. This case is one.

Cassie has been requested to type insurance descriptions for a jewelry store. While employees at the store and robbery happens; then again; then again.

As Cassies races to solve the robberies, a death occurs. Will she figure out what is going on? Are the robberies and death related?

I read this with a box set and I have to say as much as I like the steampunk setting, I found the story a bit too long for my liking. However, I am not sure how the story could have been condensed any further.

Two stars.

This is a good mystery, lots of suspects, murky motives, mysterious disappearances, and murder. It's set in a Steampunk Victorian London, although the Steampunk aspect seems incidental. Cassie, an ex-pat American working as a typist stumbles upon robbery and murder in a jewelry store. However, for some reason I can't put my finger on, the story felt flat to me. It's a mystery.

Cassie is employed by Kleinman Jewellers to type the insurance forms of their stock. Unfortunately this mundane job leads to robbery, a kidnapping and finally murder. Can Inspector Wainwright solve the case with whatever information Cassie can find.
A nice little mystery.
