White Rose Trilogy #3

Under His Discretion

Rate this book
Perkin Kingston’s distinguished good-looks and keen political mind stood out among The Queen's shining court. Perhaps too well...

The oldest of the Kingston siblings and the new Duke of York, Perkin blames his father’s murder on a five-hundred-year-old Order. Exacting his revenge is right on course, until he uses the wrong tapestry to wipe clean his blood-soaked sword.

Shay Gallagher could forgive the tapestry, and the duke’s mercurial murderous ways, but stealing her already dwindling household staff to supply his mercenary laden war camp, is too much to abide. She is ready to do whatever it takes to put the newly arrived, unreasonably attractive, dangerously intelligent, and slightly broken laird in his place.

Perkin must see his family's past wrongs made right. Even with new challenges emerging daily. Namely, the beautiful blonde lass at the bottom of the hill, challenging his rule, his life’s mission, and his very heart.

Can he keep his priorities straight while in Ireland, with its lush landscape, steeped in lore and history? A tumultuous past that will either...

Side with the Kingston’s or see them dead.

Under His Discretion (the White Rose Trilogy Book 3)
By: Stacy Von Haegert

5 stars (10 stars if I was allowed)

I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS ; WARNING: CONTAINS MATURE AND ADULT CONTENT

This story has several different peoples POV. These are my favorite type of books to read, simply because you get to see what is happening from all angles.

Under His Discretion picks right up where Under His Guidence left off. I was prepared for the wonderful writings of Ms. Von Haegert this time around, however she still threw surprises in the book that made me take a step back and just go what? Only this author can mix the queen of England, Pirates, Dukes, and commoners all into one book and make it work. OH yes there was a ball. I had a ball of a time too! Just as with the first 2 books in the White Rose Trilogy, this book drew me in from the first page and did not let up till the end. Under His Discretion is Perkin's story.

Perkin is the eldest child of the Kingston clan and is the calm, calculated and planner of the bunch, that is until his father passed away. Perkin has made a great friend in Dalton, who if you remember is the "arch enemy" of Alexander, Perkins now brother in law. Since Perkin was the voice of reason These two made a great pair because they were both calm and calculated and never made a step out of line. When Lord Kingston, Duke of York, (Richard) passed away Dalton seemed to now be the voice of reason for Perkin when it came to major decision making. One major decision is Lady Gallagher. The other major decision was regarding the Queen and future Queen of England, to which Perkin will have to come to terms with, or will he?

Lady Gallegher (Shay) happened upon two men killing her wretched step-father. Little did she know she would fall under the discretion of one of these two men soon. The new Laird McGreggor up the hill in the castle has been stealing Shay's staff, one because Shay can not pay them the wages they deserve and two because, well, he has a castle and he is very wealthy. Shay has had about enough of her new Laird. She decides she is going to let him have it. She then (while reaming him up one side and down the other) realizes the new Laird McGreggor is none other than the new Duke of York, Perkin Kingston, the man who killed her step-father. Shay and Perkin come to an arrangement of sorts that she will be under his discretion until she is married off.

Does the new Laird take kindly to Lady Gallegher? What has happened with the Queen of England? What part did the pirates play into this book? Does Perkin finally get back to his calm and collected self?

We also got to see some familiar faces from the other books! Edward, the wayward child of the Kingston bunch was there, however not as prominent as I thought he would be. Henry was in this book too. Henry did play a bigger part in this book than I thought he would.
Alexander and his wife Greyland was there along with their children. So many side characters that you will want to allow yourself to be caught up in the middle of all of their lives once again.

There is more irons in the fire in this book than I stated. If I put more about the book in here it would give it all away.

Once again, I was so wrapped up in the story that when it did end I was wishing I could go live with the characters in Northern England at the Castle and have those gallant men take care of me. I just loved how this book took me back to the 1800's in England and evoked all emotions out of me and ended with a mysterious twist.

When I hit the end of the book, the series, I was upset at Stacy. I wanted to continue to see the lives of these characters. I felt like I had invested so much of my time into what was going on with them that I did not want to come back to the "real" world. I would like to see a side novel or two with some of the side characters like Henry, Dalton or Thomas in them. Thank you Stacy for a great trilogy!

I am going to correct what I have said in my previous reviews. If you love historical romance then you will love Stacy Von Haegert. She is by far better than Ms Jane Austen. I say this because Stacy puts more action, romance and is so descriptive that she makes you want to be there helping out each and every character. Please pick up each copy of her books if you have not already! You will not regret your decision!

Under His Discretion (the White Rose Trilogy Book 3)
By: Stacy Von Haegert

I was gifted a copy for an honest review.

This is Perkins story, one of the handsome Kingston children. Perkin is blinded by his need for revenge after his father's death. He unknowingly frees Shay from the hands of her touchy step-father, but that leaves her with no funds and no protection. Since he put her in that position he extends his protection to Shay.

Shay and Perkin are drawn into a mystery that may wreck them both.

I enjoyed this third book in the White Rose Trilogy and Stacy once again has written a wonderful historic story of romance and intrigue.

In book one of the White Rose trilogy we meet Sir Perkin Kingston, Duke of Dessmark, by book 2 he becomes the Duke of York, now he is Laird McGreggor. Whatever you want to call him one thing that matters is he is not the same man that he was. Perkin's bestfriend, Lord Dalton Ashlown, has fought by his side as he makes sure justices gets served, in whatever means necessary.

Shay is the product of unfair love. Her life started that way and just kept going. Now her life is unfair so will love be the product? Maybe with any luck of the Irish.

Perkin and Shay are about to find out what happens when justices serves in Ireland. And that's just the start...

This book has all the best characters from the other 2 books, and a few new sail in. The story is what I've came to expect of Stacy's novels. There's strong and detailed characters and wonderful supporting characters. Thrilling, adventures, emotional, and romantic are just the first few ways I can describe this novel.

The intrigue, drama and excitement continue in “Under His Discretion”, the final installment of the White Rose Trilogy by Stacy Von Haegert. Perkin’s need to avenge his father leads him to an unexpected meeting with Shay Gallagher. As a strong woman just trying to find a way to survive the hand life has dealt her, Shay presents a constant challenge for Perkin in this wonderfully written enemies to lover’s romance. Secrets are revealed and lives are changed. After all, anything can happen when you add Pirates into the mix. With so many interesting and multi-layered supporting characters introduced throughout the series, this reader is hoping to see the Kingston family play a part in future HEA’s.

I received an ARC of this novel from the author and this is my honest review.

Under His Discretion

The White Rose Trilogy, what an amazingly captivating story of three siblings finding their happily ever after (through a few rough patches 😉) This final book follows Perkin who is the sophisticated eldest brother. He is hell bent on revenge and can see nothing else until he meets Shay. There is so many questions throughout this series and they are finally all answered with this final installment! This series holds a tremendous place in my heart. I have laughed, cried, been worried, and completely shocked at all the twist of these stories. Author Stacy Von Haegert is truly an amazing writer! I definitely recommend giving this series a try!

Oh, I knew that Perkin would be my favorite!!! I don't know which love I loved the most, Shay or Dalton. As I've found in all three of the White Rose books, I want to know more about the supporting characters when I've finished! My heart raced at the end of Edward's book wondering how Perkin's story would turn out. Victoria made me proud ;) However, my heart absolutely broke at the end. I had high hopes for Henry. He and Dalton, truly, deserve their own stories. I hope they get them! Excellent series!

I was given an ARC for my review.

This was the best in the series in my opinion. More intense from the start than the other two books. Perkin is no pushover, and he is not "Mr. Calm and Collected." He becomes a protector of Shay, who becomes a thorn in Perkin's side. Only later does he find that she has grabbed onto his heart and refuses to let go. Join the Kingston family for a unique family reunion in the only way that a family can. This final book is the perfect ending to a great trilogy. Murder, kidnapping and pirates, oh, my!!!

A Stunning Conclusion!

If I could give this book (the entire trilogy for thst matter) 10 stars, I would.  I wish that I could read it again for the first time.

I was given an ARC copy of this conclusion to the White Rose trilogy after reading and reviewing the first two. One of the first things to note is that this story is written from dual points of view, which I love as it reveals all sides of the story.

I was hooked into this book right from the start, just as I wss with the first two. I love Stacy's writing style and the little twists she adds into the story along the way. I want to live in the world she created. Aspects of court life, a ball with the queen, country life, and adventure with pirates - what more could you ask for in a historical romance?! Without giving too many spoilers away...

I was so happy to finally see more into Perkin - outwardly, he gives off this appearance of calculated control, but underneath it all he is a romantic who is hopelessly devoted to keeping his family happy and safe. Watching him come back to himself, after falling into a dark path of seeking revenge, after meeting the spirited Shay made my heart so happy. She was his perfect match, and it was wonderful to see his softer side as he realized whet he felt for her. I adored Shay's fiery spirit It was also great to see more of Dalton (who was mentioned as the arch rival of Perkin's brother-in-law Alex in the previous books), and how he was revealed to be a fiercely loyal and supportive friend.

I was so wrapped up in the continued story of all three characters, I couldn't put it down! I had to stop myself from reading it all in one day so that I could enjoy it's progression. I'm so invested in these connected characters now, I was sad to see it end.. i wish there was more to read! I would love to see a spinoff novel or two to add more to the story of Henry or Dalton.

If you loved the works of Jane Austen, the world of Bridgerton, or any other historical romances, you will love this trilogy by Stscy Von Haegert. I promise you, if you pick up these books (and I highly recommend that you do!), you will not regret the decision of adding them to your collection.

I was greatly anticipating Perkin's story but this one was a disappointment for me. I really think it would have been better as a contemporary rather than a period book. Perkin is hell bent on revenge and is so self absorbed that he comes across as no gentleman to the h IMO. The first half of the book I had literally worked myself into a headache and I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to finish. Shay is written strong, and self sufficient but there was also a side to her that disturbed me. I don't want to give too much away but the big mystery from book two is clarified but not immediately.

I really thought Perkin would be the dutiful, dashing duke. When I read period books I want the strong H that makes the h feel safe under his protection. The h receives protection but only under the instigation of Dalton. So already I was disappointed than the h has this jaded past and the arrival of Lord McCarthy caused greater aggravation as he is ends up seeking Shay's hand. I don't do well with angst topped off with the H pushing the suit. This brings me to the theatre scene. Let me just say they have whore houses if that's what he wanted. It did not paint her in a good light either as there is no future offered to it hence it cheapened it IMO.

Talk about a hypocrite when Perkin confronts a person from Shay's past he states. Do you know what happens to a woman left unprotected? She is open to predators. Who knew he referred to himself. He states in front of his family that he will be staying the night in Shays room (like a mistress) there is no shame on her side. It paints her as a modern thinking woman. The next morning after she gives her favors he releases his seed and she is worried that she will get pregnant and he will not be able to marry her off. Does this speak of a woman in love? Perkin does reassure her thank goodness at this point but I was not convinced of the love between H/h.

The author does have some good twists that are interesting along with the action I have enjoyed from her prior stories but I did not like the couple in this one with all Perkins baggage and the barriers that lasted too long between them. I can now definitely say Edward is my favorite Kingston and I loved to see all his family in this one. The end brought a surprise with Edward and Morgan and I hate to say I would have liked to hear more about them then the couple here. We all look for different things in books and I really had higher expectations for the Duke of York. He was a man of power who did not respect woman and Shay allowed him to treat her as though she were a common whore.

What am I going to do now that I've finished this trilogy? The tale of the Kingston family and the danger that follows them came to a great conclusion in Perkin and Shay's story. Perkin was in such a dark place when he comes across fiesty Shay, and that she was able to draw him out to become his better self was just so swoon-worthy to read. I had wondered about how Perkin's past "indiscretion" would come back to bite him; but nothing came between the love that blossomed between he and Shay. Adding in all the action and intrigue surrounding the family, the princess, threats, kidnappings, and pirates - this book had it all. And all of these related story points wove together seamlessly (much like a canopy analogy used to describe Perkin himself). I have to say this was my favorite story yet, and a fitting conclusion for the White Rose.

5/5

What an epic conclusion to the trilogy! I was constantly biting my nails and freaking out over what was going to happen! The writing has improved so much since the first book (even though the writing was already good to begin with).

Every single plot point went together so well, it was very well organized and easy to follow. This book contained many funny, sad, and exciting parts.

We all know and love Perkin the eldest brother but he’s going through it right now. After his fathers death he’s become a completely different person (one that was kinda annoying). To tell the truth I hated him at the beginning of this book he was an arrogant angry fool. But that was beginning book him, and as the book went on he changed into the better him that was kind and methodical.

Out of the 3 love interests though I think my favorite will always be Alexander!

Now we have our new character Shay! Let me tell you she was amazing and definitely got Perkin back to his normal self. She was sassy and strong and knew what she wanted. The world saw her as strong even though she doubted everything and if that’s not relatable I don’t know what is! She was so different than the other leading ladies but so similar, they all went together perfectly.

My only wish for this book was to have seen more of Edward and Morgan! I know its not their book but I would’ve liked to see a little update on them besides a single sentence at the end. But this is just me being picky.

Honestly I loved this book! I think this book had the best plot in the series and it was very enjoyable to read. I love all the content from Henry it was amazing. And the Queen was Girlbossing!

It's here and it's better than you could have imagined!

In the third book of the White Rose Trilogy we follow the final Kingston sibling, Perkin.
Perkin is your classic eldest sibling with the weight of the world on his shoulders, family means everything to him and he'll do whatever it takes to protect them. Along the way he crosses paths with a Miss Shay Gallagher, and let me tell you..their first meeting does not leave the best impression.
In fact, it's a bit of a bloody mess. But rest assured, Shay didn't mind THAT outcome one bit.
Shay Gallagher is the epitome of an independent woman. Having little family to rely on growing up, Shay is no stranger to looking out for herself. She's not afraid to take charge of her own fate, and certainly not afraid to tell the handsome Duke of York to shove it where the sun don't shine.

As Perkin and Shay dance around their obvious attraction, the suspense builds as the secrets surrounding the white rose unravel. A silent war that goes back decades between those who support the white rose and those who support the red is brought to a grand ending.

What I really loved about this book is I felt like I never saw the next scene coming. Stacy did an amazing job at keeping me second guessing and trying to piece the final clues together, all while throwing in a beautiful romance with a healthy dose of...you guessed it! SPICE.

If you haven't already, take a chance on the Kingston siblings. With hearts of gold, stubborn determination and wild streaks galore-they'll take you on a journey you won't soon forget.

I was gifted this book as an ARC reader and to give an honest review.

The white rose trilogy is not a genre of book that I would normally read, however when asked to read this book, I thought why not. And I'm so glad I did, by the end of the first book, I was totally hooked.

The third book is centered around the eldest Kingston sibling, perkin. He is hell bent on revenge, letting his cool controlled demeanour, only having one thing on his mind, tracking down his father's murderers. That is until he meats Shay, the headstrong, take no nonsense lady who is taken under Perkins care.

This book had me from the get go, seeing how perkin struggles with his loss, seeing a completely different side to his character. Unlike the first two book, I couldn't predict what was going to happen in this book, the suspense had me turning page after page. I loved the new characters brought in and meeting unlikely allies for the Kingston family and also the betrayels, which I did not see coming.

Stacey has definitely outdone herself with this third installment and personally this was my favorite, brooding men, headstrong woman, murder, mystery, pirates and ball gowns all set on the back drop of the 1800s, what more could you possibly want.
If your a fan of historical romance with a bit of a twist, same vein as bridgerton with a healthy dose of spicyness then this book series is definitely one to read.

It’s truly awful

There will be spoilers ahead.

The writing is amateurish and not well developed. The dialogue is stilted. There is little chemistry between the main characters. The plot is mostly boring. We are told the hero is very honorable, trustworthy and honors family and his country above all.

He was one of the crown’s closest advisors. He had an affair with the queen and impregnates her. The queen’s first born child is his, not the prince’s. His family and male friends were aware of the affair. Some knew he was the princess’ father.

The heroine was not connected to court and completely unaware of the hero’s adultery and dishonor to the crown. The hero is her legal ward and protector, but he sleeps with her, repeatedly. He makes no secret he is sharing her bed. He brings her to London and doesn’t disclose he was the queen’s lover. He learns the baby is his, and he doesn’t tell her, but asks her to marry him.

There is a manufactured crisis ( they abound in this story), the hero is unconscious for 3 days, during which time the heroine learns of his affair with the queen and that he is the princess’ father. She is totally okay with this and coos about how beautiful his daughter is. She doesn’t question his honor, honesty or integrity. He doesn’t grovel. It’s ridiculous.

I ended up skimming this book after a few chaotic and now I’m grumpy. A complete waste of money and time.

Perkin has now inherited another title, Duke of York since his father passed. The Queen also saw fit to grant him all of the lands of his nemesis his father killed. He will not settle until he kills all of those involved in his father’s death. When he meets the lady Shay, he is slain~ One of her ex suitors’s made it a point to let everyone know she is not pure by his hands in the past. Shay is everything Perkin needs and wants. He does not handle being around her very well and becomes jealous of anyone who pays her too much attention. He becomes her protector through a written contract until as such time she finds a husband…but will it be him instead? The two carry on and fall deeply in love with one another. But all the intrigues and mysteries that befall the Queen, Prince, new Princess, and those involved in the two secret orders will determine who lives, who dies, who will retain the throne, and uncover those thought long dead…whoever said knowing the Kingston family will lead a dull life? You will not want to miss the finale in the lives of the Kingston’s and their many associates and allies.

Under His Discretion (the White Rose Trilogy Book 3)
By: Stacy Von Haegert

I was given an ARC copy for an honest review, with that said,

I absolutely LOVED this book!! It was the perfect conclusion to this series! I really felt a connection to these characters. The first two books pulled me into this world and this book made me wish I could stay forever! It’s funny, enchanting and filled with drama! Royalty, traitors, pirates and long lost family members returned from the dead! Shay Gallagher is EXACTLY what Perkin Kingston needs to bring him back from his grief. She is a beautifully bold Irish girl who takes zero crap from anyone and she knows exactly how to get under his skin (in the best ways!) And he is a protective, super stubborn, romantic who will do ANYTHING for his family and friends. Their love is all consuming And powerful. I’m sad that the story is over but I will definitely be reading it again and again! This series has been an absolute joy to read and I will gladly add each one to my collection!

His Salvation

I absolutely loved Perkins and Shay’s story. After his father Richard was killed, Perkins went into a dark place and revenge is all he saw. His best friend Dalton worried about him. Bug when he was also made the Laird of all the McGreggor lands in Ireland and the ward of the 2 youngest McGreggors he set in motion his vengeance from Ireland.
Shay had just buried her mother when her step father was killed by the new McGreggor Laird. Shay couldn’t care less that he’s dead but by God she’s made that the Laird used the ancestral tapestry to clean his sword.
It seems two very strong heads will but together. When Dalton talks Perkins into taking Shay and her property under his protection nothing will ever be the same.
As the seems to grow closer there are forces that not only want Perkins dead but also want to keep them apart. When threats are made against the newborn princess every one must find the culprits before something happens.
A beautifully written story with an amazing ending.

Never take on an Irish lass in a game of strategy and love

You are but a boat. He is the sea. - Shay Gallagher

Perkin Kingston steps fully into the limelight in Under His Discretion, the final entry in Stacy Von Haegert's White Rose Trilogy.

The recently crowned patriarch of the Kingston family, Perkin lives his life in service to the crown. It's in this we find that though Perkin is outwardly a paragon of virtue, as with all legends, he has feet of clay. And a nemesis in the form of one Shay Gallagher.

They meet in the aftermath of Perkin killing Shay's stepfather. Rather than simper and fret like a prim and proper lady Shay takes Perkin to task for wiping his bloodied blade on a treasured wall hanging.

Theirs is a tumultuous courtship with mixed messages, denial, intrigue, secrets and lies. In the end, Perkin embodies the hero he has always presented to the world, a man of honor and sacrifice.

This fascinating story has spanned centuries of British royal history on the question of 'what if'? A truly inspired take on the War of the Roses.

This is the stunning conclusion to The White Rose Trilogy and the story was everything I expected and more.

Perkin is devastated after the death of his father and now he must continue on with nothing to really ground him. He goes to Ireland and becomes the new Laird, and what he finds there is completely to his surprise, a very willful and beautiful young woman, Shay Gallagher, who will teach him a thing or two about how things really get done when a woman is in charge.

Set in the 1840s there are many intrigues regarding the crown, birthrights, and fulfilling one’s destiny. I loved the multiple POV and the love and devotion of the Kingston siblings.

As for Perkin and Shay they are the perfect mix push and pull attraction that had me completely enthralled! What a fabulous ending to a wonderful series!

And we thought we knew Perkin- HA
Once again, Stacy Von Haegert has provided an amazing page turner. In the final book of The White Rose Trilogy, we get to see the many pieces of The Duke of York, Perkin Kingston. I admit his brother Edward had my heart but oh lord help me, Perkin came galloping in on Storm and well I was done for! Under His Discretion brings you into Perkin's world of revenge against all that have threatened his family, and the person that tops the list is Melbrook. As Dalton and Perking begin their journey of just revenge, the story begins in Ireland and that's where he meets the spitfire Shay. Their journey together is a rollercoaster that is beautiful, touching, dangerous and of course exciting. The only thing I didn't like was this is the final book in the trilogy and I'd love so much more, but then again I have FAITH. *wink*
