Survival-horror has been part of the manga landscape since at least Kazuo Umezu's The Drifting Classroom, but there's no doubt that it received a huge boost from Battle Royale. Nowadays it's everywhere -- Btooom!, Aphorism, Cage of Eden, RealPG, Strobo, etc. Nor is the genre confined to the shonen and seinen demographics as Keiko Suenobu's Limit demonstrates -- even girls in Japan want in on the thrill of murdering their classmates.

The story follows a predictable set-up -- Mizuki Konno's class is on its way for a group camping trip, but the bus driver falls asleep at the wheel and plunges into a heavily wooded ravine in one of the more desolate areas of Japan. There are only five survivors who, wouldn't you know it, are the five people least likely to get along. Will they be able to work together to survive until the school notices they're missing?

Not a chance in hell.

While other survival-horror authors either have an external force impose a kill-or-be-kill situation on their characters, or go for a slow and natural build-up to the carnage, Suenobu says, "Screw that," and rushes through the foreplay. By the end of chapter 2 the girls are ready to go all Lord of the Flies. (How convenient, the teacher included a scythe in the class camping gear!)

The real problem with this series is that it's by Keiko Suenobu. If you've read her previous series, Life, you know the premise of that was, "Teenage girls are psychopaths barely held in check by society." And the premise of this series is, "Teenage girls are psychopaths barely held in check by society." The only difference is that Limit takes society away so the girls can go at it without any restraints. But that's like the difference between an MMA match and a street fight. The characters in Limit act just like the ones in Life, only more so. And that undermines the very point of survival-horror -- the genre is about how people behave in the State of Nature, and if the answer is, "Just like in civilization, except they don't pull their punches," what's the point?

Review for volumes 1 - 6 (whole series)

Battle Royale (Hunger Games) style survival stories are currently quite common in the manga medium, but Limit is the only version I'm aware of that's aimed at girls. After spotting the eye-catching cover repeatedly in the book store I was really looking forward to reading this series ... so I'm sad to say, it turned out to be quite the disappointment.

What sets the setting apart from other survival stories is that the characters aren't forced by some outside power, someone who willingly pits them against each other, to fight and eventually kill. Nor are they hunted by somebody. In Limit a handful of girls survive a terrible bus accident and get stuck in a valley while waiting for help. They just need to work together and get enough food for a few days. But they're classmates ... and as we all know, high school hierarchy can be a reason to make you want to kill someone.

Limit is a story not so much about survival, but about bullying. The girls who survive are two best friends of the queen bee, one shy, weak-willed tag along girl, one independent outsider and the lowest victim of the queen bee's bullying, who happens to get her hands on a sickle. So, yea, they're not suddenly going to become all lovey-dovey, just because their lives depend on it. Nope, they prefer to make things much, much harder for everybody involved ...

While the idea itself, when it comes down to it, is little more than high school drama relocated into a forest, that's not the main problem of the series. It could have had interesting character interactions and development, but for a work on bullying and teenage social dynamics to be good, you have to go a little deeper. And for me, Keiko Suenobu just contents herself with the most superficial and at the same time exaggerated take on the subject.

The characters are either way too extreme or their character development is way too simplistic. While main character Konno's initial situation of mostly pretending to be in the group, taking active part in their bullying, just to avoid becoming a target herself, was rather interesting, she becomes a caring, forgiving and "I'm now interested in other people's feelings" person way too fast. Pretty much the same goes for Haru, , even though her development is slightly better handled, since she doesn't immediately becomes friendly with everybody else. Victim Morishige, on the other hand, is a real psycho, to a point where even her pretty bad background story isn't enough to make me feel for her and even less like her. That girl just needs some medical attention fast. Kamiya's neat survival skills felt also way too convenient to me, but in comparison that's a minor issue. None of the cast is in any way complex or memorable.

The plot itself is very simple with few twists and no impressive revelations, and therefore unable to make up for the characters. A large part of it, as said, is about bullying ... and consequently understanding, forgiving, becoming friends. Many of these scenes are quite cliched and cheesy (like delivering a dramatic speech while hanging off a cliff). The dramatic parts that lead to trouble (injury, death ...) often felt too stupid. The ending, I'm not going to spoil it, but imho is was way too cheesy as well.

The art is actually very pretty and well-done. While Suenobu struggles with action scenes, that often make little sense, she is great with facial expressions and atmospheric sceneries. Not much to criticize here.

All in all, Limit is not completely bad and probably good for a younger audience, but I was simply hoping for something either much more profound or at least focused on the fighting for survival, rather than fighting for queen bee status. I'm all for more diversity in the "girls' manga" genre, but sadly, Limit ended up being a lukewarm and ultimately forgettable bullying story. The beautiful art makes it pleasant on the eyes, but imho it offers too little for the mind.

If you want a girls' manga that's different from the masses, I'd recommend Piece instead. If you want a survival story aimed at girls (mostly), just get The Hunger Games ;)

This is described as being similar to Lord of the Flies, and there are definitely elements of that story present. In Limit, we follow five girls that have survived a bus crash into a deep ravine that they are unable to escape from and thus must await rescue.

Within this group of girls there are two who've been considered members of the "popular" group although they aren't close friends, Mizuki Konno and Haru Ichinose. Haru has always been jealous of Konno's beauty and intelligence, although she has kept her feelings hidden.

Also amongst the survivors is a smart unassuming girl (Chieko Kamiya), a tag along frightened girl who is easily bossed around (Chikage Usui), and an outsider who has been relentlessly bullied in school (Arisa Morishige). Rather quickly after the crash, Morishige gets her hands on the one weapon, a scythe, and declares herself the one in charge as she vents her anger on the other girls. Morishige tries to impose a caste system amongst the girls by attempting to turn them against each other. The lowest ranking member of the caste will be declared "the slave" and will not receive food.

Some of the noticeable similarities to Lord of the Flies are:
1. An accident leaves a group of kids stranded.
2. They are all one gender.
3. There is no adult supervision present.
4. There are noticeably strong and week members within the group.
5. The scythe takes the place of the conch from Lord of the Flies. Whomever holds it is in charge.
6. There is a shortage of food.

While survival will be a major theme in this manga, I think it may take a backstage to bullying as that is the catalyst that may prevent the group from working together to survive.

Lord of the Flies was a fascinating look at how a group of kids turned savage and lost their morality while trapped on an island struggling to survive. It turned into a survival of the fittest. The multitude of characters made the story interesting and fluid, and I'm concerned that with only five girls there won't be enough story to carry the series without seeming too repetitive.

As a first volume I found it intriguing enough to continue reading. At the time of this review there are currently six volumes out and my hope is that the series will not be long and drawn out.

When it comes to manga lately, I feel like I’ve been living under a rock. I received this review copy, and wasn’t familiar with the title at all. I love the cover, though, with the main protagonist standing defiantly, yet a bit battered, and staring boldly ahead. The cover is very simple and eye-catching, and I immediately sat down to read the book. Keiko Suenobu is also the author of LIFE, which was being released by Tokyopop before they shuttered their offices. I haven’t read any of that series, but after reading Limit, I am tempted to track it down.

Limit is a Lord of the Flies type story. After their school trip goes horribly wrong and their bus crashes, Kanno and four of her classmates are stranded in the middle of the woods with only their wits to aid in their survival. With their teachers and classmates dead, the five girls must juggle their fear and panic with their feelings for each other. This is a diverse group of personalities, from the bullied Morishige, who has the only weapon and is brimming over with hate and resentment, to Kanno, who was part of the popular clique who made Morishige’s life hell at school. Sakura, the ringleader of the clique, is dead in the bus, and Haru, one of the survivors, isn’t dealing with her best friend’s death very well. This is a powder keg of emotions just ready to blow, and only Kamiya realizes that it’s going to take more than luck to survive until they are rescued. She immediately attempts to use diplomacy and get everyone to work together to ensure their survival, but she’s not having much luck. There is a lot of resentment and so much ill-will to overcome, that things look bleak for our intrepid cast.

Limit focuses on the complex relationships the girls have formed over the years. Angry Morishige is delighting in her sudden ascent to the top of the food chain; she’s got the weapon, and she hates everyone enough that she won’t hesitate to use it. She casts everyone else in the pyramid beneath her, leaving Kanno and Haru to battle it out for the bottom rung of the ladder. With the weapon, Morishige also controls the meager food supply the girls have foraged from the wreckage of the bus. After being a bottom-feeder for so long, she is ecstatic to feel some kind of empowerment over the girls who constantly picked on her and made each school day so horrible.

I thought that this was a great introduction to the series. I reached the end and wanted more. The relationship dynamics bubble with emotion and kept me engaged in the book from the first page. Kanno isn’t an extremely likable character because she always takes the path of least resistance. She’s a sheep to Sakura’s domineering personality, and once Sakura meets an untimely end, Kanno realizes how meaningless her other relationships truly are. Avoiding confrontation, kissing up to Sakura, and trying to hold a middle ground so she wasn’t bullied didn’t endear her to her classmates, she is learning the hard way.

I love Keiko Suenobu’s expressive artwork. I never had to guess how her characters felt as they were maneuvered from one panel to the next. Emotions are deftly rendered here, and the visuals are as compelling as the prose. This is a great start to a series that will appeal to fans of conflict driven stories. I don’t know how the girls are going to reconcile their feelings for each other and still survive all alone in the wilderness, with no food and only a cave for shelter. I am looking forward to the next volume!

Turns out that "Lord of the Flies, but girls" already exists. There's Beauty Queens for a satirical take (be aware that there are issues with the trans representation in that book), or this for more of a horror version. I wasn't expecting it to be quite so gory and intense right away, but if that's what you're going for, you'd probably enjoy it!

~3.5/5

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

I finally picked up this series, during the RightStuf! sale (ohmygod, you guys. That sale practically made me go broke) (kidding) (kind of). I’d heard both Kodansha and Vertical mention it, and it had never really caught my notice until they did. It fell completely under my radar, which is a shame.

I knew it would have darker themes, but I still didn’t know much about it until I decided to get it. I went into it knowing about the Lord of the Flies elements, and was looking forward to the psychological aspects, but was still a little unsure, but looking forward to it.

I wasn’t expecting much from the art, but it’s actually very pretty. I love the way the characters, particularly their faces and expressions, look. The details are really nice, very realistic, really graphic at times. It’s really pretty to look at. Also, the books are so tiny, similar to how Japan prints their manga, and I love it. It’s just kind of refreshing, and they’re so cute, I love looking at them.

I also wasn’t expecting to like the main character, Konno, as I was thinking she was going to be a bitch, and while she is rather selfish and always looking to be following the majority, I’m also really intrigued by her. She figured out when she was young that people will turn on you, and so has decided not to get close to anyone and just follow along and agree. And now she’s stranded with four other classmates after the school bus crashes and kills everyone else; she's not close with any of them, and she’s thrown completely out of her element.

There’s one girl, Kamiya, who’s smart and calm and getting a handle on things realistically. One girl’s hurt and doesn’t know what to do. Another was ‘friends’ with Konno but actually detests her. And the last was bullied and is kind of psychotic now, claiming power.

There are already the beginnings of betrayal and rage and violence, and I’m sure it’s only going to get worse from now until it gets better, if it gets better. Which I'm not even sure that it will, and that excites me. I’m really looking forward to it.

I love psychological books, and there are too little of them out there, in my opinion. I also don’t read a lot of straight-out violently psychological books where I don’t have any clue how it’s going to end, so I’m really looking forward to reading more of this series.

I've read most of Keiko Suenobu's "Life" and as soon as I saw the cover of this book at the local library, I knew it was by her, without even looking at the author name. Suenobu has a tendency to focus on bullying in her manga (or is it just "Life" I don't even know anymore) and seeing that battered and worn girl just made it click. However, that's not the only reason why she's all battered up like that! In fact, that ISN'T the reason why she's battered up. It's survival of the fittest and they are literally trying to survive in the middle of nowhere after a bus accident.

But overcoming the physical dangers is only half the battle. It's a psychological warfare as well.

I'm excited to read the rest of this.

Full 6-volumes series review

High school is brutal; it's eat (be popular and/or useful to those who are popular) or be eaten (be unpopular, whether due to your own choices/actions or those outside your control). Mizuki Konno is firmly on the side of "don't get eaten" and has managed to be part of a popular inner circle in her class, which is leaving for a weeklong trip (training? cram school? not explained well) in the mountains. While traveling through the remote, twisty mountain roads, their bus driver passes out, plunging the bus off a cliff and killing nearly everyone aboard. Now Mizuki and the few other survivors must survive until someone realizes they're missing and comes to save them. And someone will come save them...right?

It's a survival story, of course, and I recommend having all 6 volumes at hand when you choose to read: by its very nature it goes fast, but that also means that a single volume doesn't cover a ton of narrative ground.

It's a shoujo survival story, which means...Lord of the Flies but the drawings are pretty and the characters are girls, and maybe a larger eventual focus on the characters' emotions? IDK, I never read LotF and have no intention to do so because there's not much terribly appealing in imagining people breaking down and giving in to their worst impulses? (The difference here is that you get to watch people break down, score one for manga.)

But really, these are not nice people. The survivors are a couple popular girls, a distinctly unpopular girl they targeted, a generic wallflower with no spine, and a standoffish but sensible girl who is apopular and somehow has managed to avoid aligning herself in the classroom death. The stress of the death of 30 classmates and their teacher brings old (and not-so-old) resentments bubbling up, with some characters ready to do anything that makes them feel better, or feel in control, even if those actions objectively harm their survival goals.

To me, it needed another book to wrap up better; it was finally getting in doubt, the characters starting to doubt their sanity and each other even more, but it didn't...resolve in a way that felt satisfactory, even within the existing setting.

Not a bad series, definitely an enjoyable way to spend a couple hours in the afternoon, but more of a library pick.

following the high of watching yellowjackets (and my anticipation to actually read lord of the flies), i was quite interested in seeing something with a similar premise to the show: an all-girls cast of characters forced to survive in the wilderness after a harrowing accident.

though the manga was quick to jump into the action and get the girls stranded as well as being rather cliche, i was willing to look past all this. i get wanting to get into the meat of the story as soon as possible and i know that with stories like these, there is a level of predictability in the general beats that it will tend to hit. all this, i was willing to look past as long as the way the story was done was interesting & if the characters themselves were interesting. with general plots like this where we tend to know where it'll generally go, i think the characters and their development (alone and in their relationships with one another) is what really holds the story together. for me, this unfortunately was not the case. i think along with fast-tracking the events of the story to the accident, we also fast-tracked through a lot of the development that would've made the story a lot more interesting. instead of working up to the hierarchy in the wilderness and the casual cruelty/immortality that the characters partake in, we're thrown quite suddenly into it.

while it is possible that the series found its footing in future volumes, i don't envision myself going out of my way to pick it up. perhaps it's because i am just an avid enjoyer of the psychological aspect of a story like this, as the characters come to terms with their new reality and cope with it in their own, often messed up ways. on that front, this volume fell really short for me which sucks because i really did want to like this more!

As "game of death" stories go, Limit has about the most normal setup that I've seen. There aren't any aliens, or sci-fi tech, or government conspiracies, or anything like that. And in a way, that's what makes this interesting. A bus full of students on a school trip has an accident, and tumbles down into a deep ravine. It's too steep for the surviving students to climb back up, so they have no other option but to try and survive until help comes...which might take significantly longer than you'd expect, due to the topography of the area (and one other thing that's spoilery).

But what seems like a traumatic, but ultimately manageable situation soon takes on a Lord of the Flies aspect. Years of pent-up frustrations over bullying, ostracization, and other perceived slights bubble up to the surface, as the students finally let their true feelings out, in the absence of the social expectations of school. It's a little melodramatic at times, but still more down to earth than many setups in this genre.

And that really is what volume one is, for the most part: setup. It isn't until the very end that the situation really comes to a head. The rest of it is spent laying out the reasons why each girl might feel justified taking part in the violence that's about to ensue. So, it's a workable start, but nothing too special just yet. Certainly enough to have me interested in volume two, though.

I conquered the challenge I set out for myself that being to read at least one manga book that is read backwards. I do not usually read graphic novels but was up for this challenge.

After figuring out the order of the book, I really got into this story and to my surprise got drawn into the story. It's full young adult drama. The story unfolds with these high school students leaving to go to a camp that the school provides. On the way to the camp, the bus gets into a terrible accident leaving only a few survivors. The survivors fight back and forth with each other. The lack of supplies starts to cause multiple problems for the survivors.

Will these survivors be able to put their differences aside for their own survival or will they fight each other to the death? Will they be rescued? Read the series to find out.
