In the colorful, quirky world of Leslie McGuirk, a pony-sized talking snail convinces the perfect boy to be his owner, and the pair builds a friendship strengthened by the differences between them.
When you’re a Gigantic Exotic Gastropod in full bloom, life can be pretty challenging. After all, there are plenty of Snail Catchers out there, not to mention circuses and zookeepers eager to put you on display. But finding just the right owner can be tricky, despite your obvious assets: no fur that needs brushing, an impressive vocabulary, and being big enough to ride on - very slowly, of course. Is there anyone in this fast-paced world who might consider Snail to be the coolest pet around?
Leslie McGuirk is the author-illustrator of several books about Tucker the dog, including LUCKY TUCKER, TUCKER'S SPOOKY HALLOWEEN, and HO, HO, HO, TUCKER! She also co-authored and illustrated WIGGENS LEARNS HIS MANNERS AT THE FOUR SEASONS RESTAURANT. She lives in Vero Beach, Florida.
A giant (pony sized) snail is looking for a way to save himself from ending up in the circus, the zoo, or even on the menu of a fancy french restaurant. He finds a lone boy at the playground and convinces the boy to take him on as a pet. The boy isn't too into the idea of a snail as a pet at first, but the snail wins him over and before they know it they become the best of friends. Very cute story...very cute illustrations.
"Snail Boy" is a crazy book! Students will love reading this book because it is so funny! I would use this book in a text user lesson. The book includes many thought bubbles throughout the book, which is an interesting way to have students write. I would want students to explore this type of writing in their own writing.
