I'm a USA Today bestselling author who LOVES the hot stuff, both to read and to write. My favorite obsessions are all things coffee, almost everything on HGTV, and dreaming up new stories.
Series also called the Fitz Clare Chronicles Appeal: Pacing: Easy pace, doesn't reveal anything too fast, more character development in the beginning, description of setting and character thoughts, multiple plotlines with flashbacks and differing points of view, end-oriented. Characterization: characters developed over time, book focuses on multiple characters in third person, series characters Story Line: multiple plotlines, but they don't always overlap, steamy, resolved ending Frame: atmosphere=dark, detailed background, time setting is important.
Similar Authors: Sherrilyn Kenyon--Fantasy Lover--suspension of believes, heroes who are experts at pleasing women, have lived a long time, and no longer have much passion for life, restraint before sex, BUT the raciness levels are very different between the two books.
Lucius the White, a long and stressful life is what he sees for himself. Though Upyr, his sense of lost is to much. On a return trip to Bridesmere to check on the youngest of the Fitz clan, life takes an unexpected journey. No spoiling, but every upyr deserves their story. More of Lucius will be mentioned in later books. Emma Holly, writes to those of us who enjoy reading Paranormal. The series draws to your emotions and brings warmth within. A must for lovers of the Paranormal’s.
Lucian is a vampire, werewolf from another planet. He takes the memories and assumes the identity of a dying man. Lucian is old, and tired of life, friends are worried he will kill himself soon. Theo is a poor, gentlewoman supporting her mother and sister through embroidery. They meet when Lucien travels to his new home and catches her scent. There are 2 romantic entanglements, Theo/Lucien and Theo's sister/Lucien's gardner. There was nothing new or exciting here, just a simple innocent country miss falling in love with a vampire. Not much drama or emotional growth. One issue I had was Lucien erasing Theo's memory all the time. He used magic to compel people, erase their memories, change weather and put out fires by creating water man. And no one saw or remembered anything. Made everything very convenient and easy for him.
This is a hot, paranormal romance. It felt like there was something missing for me, or that I just couldn't get into the plot or characters as much as I'd hoped.
When you're not LOOKING for a husband, that's when one seems to fall right into your lap. OR hop over your garden wall. But Theo's husband isn't all he seems to be...
What I Liked
SEXY. Love the bedplay in this book. :D And the few little bits of humor that made me snort.
What I Didn't Like
That Vampires or Upyr were said to be... alien... older or even as advanced as Atlantians. This to me took some of the appeal away from the Vampire, I can't quite put my finger on why, but when she went into how Lucius was sent from his Spaceship I LOLd. Don't think so. Suppose I just like the original folklore better...
I must confess I didn't like this one as well as the earlier books, although I read it just as rapidly. Courting Midnight, set in regency England, tells the tale of Lucius the White, the oldest upyr whose memory of his past is lost to the ages. He assumes the memories and identity of a mortal nobleman, and quickly regains his interest and desires in the world around him. The tale returns to the town of Bridesmere and the descendants of Aimery and Edmund from the earlier books, including the sisters Theo and Caroline Beckett.
I like Emma Holly a lot as an author, I was first introduced to her when "Velvet Glove" first game out. I got distracted, and happened to pick this up off the library shelf purely based on seeing her name. Not my favorite work of hers, and I may not read others of the "Upyr" series because it's just *too* far off the deep end for me on the "esoteric/otherworld" themes to be even remotely plausible. Without putting spoilers in here, some of the premise for where these "otherworldy" folks come from made me roll my eyes hard enough that it actively infringed on my enjoyment of the book.
It was a great read and a great addition to the upry series. This was the second time I read it (the first time was over four years ago and I started the series from the beginning this time and needed to re-read). Love how she ties everything together and gives you a look into how the upry started and what has happened to some of the upry from the earlier books. Can't wait to re-read the next book Kissing Midnight! Then I get to start reading the rest of the series for the first time!
I enjoy some of Emma Holly's books I found this one enjoyable. This was a PN story featuring a werewolf (and friends) with vampire characteristics. On the surface, it's a basic romance but there are a couple of subplots that liven things up considerably. This is one of a series, though not the first; merely the first one I have read. I believe I will be looking for others, though, to add to my considerable TBR list.
i bounced btwn 3 & 4 stars. i like the twists & turns & story part of this book. the romance btwn main characters & supporting characters is pretty good. there were just bits i didn't like w/ the writing, and idk if i'll read any more from this author. but i did enjoy the majority of the story, so i settled on 4 stars,
The story is set in 1813, England. Lucius White is an immortal. When he gets the opportunity to masquerade as human, he takes it. Under an assumed identity, Lucius falls in love with Theo Becket. Holly's version of sexy vampires are less intense than Laura K. Hamilton, however, Holly still writes some very hot love scenes.
I have never read an Emma Holly book that I didn't love. I always love reading about the aloof and seemly unfeeling or uncaring character finding his or her love and happiness. And the awesome smex doesn't hurt either. I'm eager to read the next books in the series.
This was kind of a weird series for me. The first few books in this series were good for me. This was an okay one and my last one I read because it just didn't much for me. The vampires in this series conform to the generally accepted mythology. The shifters are okay too.
Better than I could have hoped for in a story featuring alien vampire-werewolf hybrids. Tongue our of cheek, while the premise is a bit thin at times the writing itself was enjoyable and the characters more engaging than I usually find in the (admittedly few) romance novels that I read.
if I was going to enjoy this book but I'm so glad I did. I really enjoyed the characters and they had more than surface personalities. I'm sure they will be in more of the series. Emma has got me hooked.
I'm enjoying this series, but have become aware that Emma Holly's writing skills are not top-notch. Oh, well, the library has two more of these for me to pick up today.
Once I start her books, I push myself to finish in a couple of days, so I can go onto the other ones. There's paranormal romance, and then there's Emma's paranormal, historical erotica romance...
I would give this four stars, but I am not a fan of the part of the book where Lucius "erases" Theo's memories. He admits it at the end, but I just don't like it as much in the beginning.
