A long dead evil stirs. An unlikely hero must face his destiny. Squire Col Vanheim wants nothing more than to train, get his spurs, and get away from the capital with its scheming, arrogant nobles. As a commoner raised to a position reserved for nobles Col faces bullying, taunts, and dirty tricks, when he isn't ignored completely. On the day of his greatest triumph, a beastman invasion sends Col running for his life with the arrogant Princess Rain in tow. With his mentor murdered, his home in flames, and an army of monsters out to kill him, can Col deliver Rain to the safety of legendary Celestia? The Squire is a tale of love and honor, duty and revenge, war and survival.
Full disclosure, I listened to this on the author's youtube channel, where it has a full assortment of music and audio effects that made the listening experience very enjoyable. Other reviews mention some grammatical and word-choice errors in the text itself so I wouldn't know about those.
This was pretty generic, almost exactly what you'd expect from the premise alone, but it was executed well and I can't really complain about anything outside of it being pretty generic. The protagonist was a little hyper-competent for my tastes given that he's a squire and little else, and the heroes escape death or capture more than once through some very conveniently timed events or circumstances.
The story is very good. A young squire out for vengeance after seeing his mentor's death. Along the way he matures, makes unlikely friends. Finds enemies and fall in love. Nothing new here, but it was well done.
Decent read as I have come to expect from this author. Engaging characters and didn’t go overboard with development. Only caveat to this take is some of the scenarios seemed forced and inserted rather than developed. Still a recommended read.
This was a straight forward written book of a story. Enjoyable plot and characters and storyline. It was a solid read. The ending was a little abrupt but I guess the author is leaving it to the reader of where Rain and Col will end.
James E Wisher has written another great book! I do not know how he can think up a story line and write a story you do not want to end. Please bring on the next!
The novel was very interesting and I loved the story . Many event Felt forced at times probably due to the fact that it appears this is the only book in the series rather than making it a trilogy which probably would have made it much better of a story. Overall I enjoyed the book immensely but parts of the romance felt off which was fine and it offered an interesting ending which I feel would be better benefit it with a sequel but overall I enjoyed the book monthly and it was a very good read
The storyline is great, but I kept getting caught up in mis-spelled words (wonder instead of wander, then/than,etc), which made it hard to grasp the nuances of the story. There are also problems with tenses (past/present/future), so that I had to re-read a lot. Squire Col and Princess Rain are great characters who learn from their mistakes, survive, then go on to save the day.
This was a very pleasant find. My only complaint is it wasn't longer. I story line was fast moving and interesting. The author maintained the right tone and balance throughout the book in regards to storyline, plot, and character development. I gave 5 stars because I would read it a second time.
Queens, kings, princesses, magic and one squire who refuses to lose everything. Mix in a little heavenly help to fight the dark magic and the batsmen that are around and you couldn't ask for a better story. Well written and thought out. There could be a sequel, however the story ends leaving you satisfied. Well done.
I found myself grinning like a child, while cheering for the heroes. Many nights I have read books straight thru like tonight. This however is the first time I felt compelled to write a review. Be forlorn their isn't a deep plot. The characters are in every book of this genre, but like a piece of chocolate it was great while it lasted.
It was well written, there were just too many things that I found either unbelievable or just not explained in a way that gave it the credibility it needed.
